Chapter 66: A Fateful Encounter with the Zombie King
"Zombie dogs," someone shouted, followed by gunshots, which took down two zombie dogs.
Another zombie dog was knocked away by a person from Wang Yuanhang's team, using an iron rod.
"Not a bad cooperation," Wang Yuanhang complimented, looking enviously at the gun in Sheng Hongye's hand.
Acknowledging the compliment, Sheng Hongye nodded and said calmly, "Let's move on. We shouldn't waste time. If it really rains, the zombies may mutate."
The group proceeded forward, rushing into the iron fence that Sheng Hongye and the others had explored yesterday.
The footsteps awakened the zombies inside, and a series of low howls echoed from the darkness, a grating sound that sent shivers down Su Ling's spine.
Although Wang Yuanhang's team didn't have guns, everyone wielded an iron rod and showed no mercy when dealing with the zombies. They seemed well-accustomed to this route.
However, they seemed to underestimate the number of zombies, as more than twenty of them suddenly surged out.
Hearing the creatures' howling, Su Ling couldn't help but feel anxious. She took several deep breaths to steady herself.
Her grandfather had once told her that fear wouldn't solve problems. The more dangerous the situation, the more one must remain calm and collected.
Su Ling lived by this motto, overcoming countless heart-stopping surgeries and saving numerous patients. Now, in the apocalypse, she believed she could do the same.
Aiming at a zombie lunging towards Er Lei, Su Ling flexed her index finger and pulled the trigger.
With a bang, the zombie's head exploded, and white liquid spewed out from the shattered bones.
Chen Yu couldn't help but comment, "Sister Su Ling, your accuracy is incredible."
As soon as he spoke, Wang Yuanhang shouted, "This won't work. You all retreat, and a few of us will lead the zombies away. You quickly enter the grain warehouse."
Sheng Hongye immediately said, "You go into the warehouse; I'll lead them away."
Wang Yuanhang replied, "We have a wind ability user in our team who can increase our overall speed. It's more suitable for us to lead them away. You should hurry into the warehouse, move as much rice as you can, and we'll split it evenly when we get out."
He then called out to the team, "Li Erniu, use your ability quickly."
A tall and thin man responded and placed his hands on the ground. Suddenly, two fist-sized balls of wind emerged beneath everyone's feet.
Wang Yuanhang shouted again, "Run!"
Immediately, the group dashed toward the other side of the fence, and a few zombies followed.
Han Qiang glanced inside and then turned back, saying, "Brother Sheng, it seems to be clear inside. Let's go in quickly."
At that moment, the middle-aged woman beside Su Ling suddenly took a step back.
A quick glance revealed the terror in her eyes, raising suspicions in Su Ling's heart.
By this time, Sheng Hongye had already entered the warehouse.
Su Ling looked at the woman again and coldly asked, "Why are you still here?"
Biting her lip, the woman moved forward a few steps.
Su Ling suddenly turned the gun toward her, causing the woman to gasp in fear.
Frowning, Su Ling asked, "What are you afraid of?"
"N-nothing. Let's hurry inside," the woman said, walking towards the grain warehouse.
Geng Hao hurried over. "Sister Su Ling, what's wrong?"
Su Ling glanced ahead and whispered, "Something seems off. Keep an eye on these three; I'll go inform Sheng Hongye."
Geng Hao nodded and took Su Ling's place.
Su Ling quickly walked to Sheng Hongye's side.
"You and Er Lei, be careful," she said.
As soon as she finished speaking, they heard the iron fence behind them slam shut.
Everyone immediately stopped in their tracks, and Chen Yu ran to the gate of the fence.
Cursing loudly, he shouted, "Shit, who the hell locked the door?"
At this moment, the woman suddenly rushed towards the fence.
In a frenzy, she screamed, "I don't want to die, I don't want to die!"
The other two middle-aged men, however, remained indifferent.
Seeing that something was amiss, Sheng Hongye reacted promptly.
"There might be unknown dangers inside, come to the entrance quickly."
As soon as he spoke, one of the middle-aged men suddenly flew up and slammed towards the bag of grains.
"Ah!"
A cry of bone-crushing agony rang out.
The man vanished instantly, and another one suddenly went berserk. He brandished an iron pipe and charged towards the bag.
Cursing loudly, he said, "You zombie motherf***er, I'll take you on today."
Before he could reach the bag, he was lifted up like a kite in the wind.
Then, a massive shadow rose slowly from behind the bag and grabbed the man's head. With a crisp cracking sound, it twisted his head off.
Despite having faced many life-and-death situations, Su Ling couldn't help but break out in a cold sweat.
What was this thing? It was too terrifying.
The woman shouted again, "This is the Zombie King. Unless we kill him, none of us will survive today."
Su Ling finally understood why Wang Yuanhang had gone to lure those small zombies. It turned out he had set them up.
But now it was too late for anything. A large lock hung on the outside of the fence, and Chen Yu fired two shots at it, but the lock didn't budge. The loud noise only angered the shadow.
He howled and emerged from behind the bag of grains.
His height was almost the same as Sheng Hongye's, but he was incredibly muscular, like a small mountain, exuding a strong sense of oppression.
Sheng Hongye quickly aimed at its head and fired.
However, the usually precise shots of Sheng Hongye seemed to miscalculate this time.
The zombie's head not only showed no reaction but also made a sound of metal clashing, as if knocking against a lock with a gun.
Unable to hold back, Chen Yu cursed, "Is this thing even human?"
The zombie seemed to know that it was Sheng Hongye who attacked it, and it roared and lunged at him.
Sheng Hongye twisted his body and slid one meter away. The zombie's attack missed, and it immediately pursued him with teeth and claws.
Er Lei immediately fired two shots to divert the zombie's attention.
Sheng Hongye knew that Er Lei's injuries hadn't fully healed yet, so he shouted, "Don't engage with it, quickly open the door! I'll distract it."
Er Lei, driven by his protective instinct, fired another shot at the zombie.
"I'm fine, Mr. Sheng. You guys go first."
The woman suddenly spoke in despair, "This lock is made of stainless steel. Unless you have the key, there's no way to open it."
Su Ling once again pointed the gun at her. "Did Wang Yuanhang plan this in advance? Where's the key?"
The woman cried, "He's been observing you for days, and he had us follow you just to disarm your vigilance and get rid of useless people like us."
"That scumbag!"
Thinking of the gruesome fate of those two men, Su Ling couldn't help but curse.
As she lifted her head, she was shocked to see the Zombie King pouncing towards Sheng Hongye and couldn't help but cry out, "Be careful!"
At the same time, the system once again sent a prompt asking if she wanted to take control.
