Chapter 63 - Song Family (2)
Soon, Xiao Cui found out.
“Sister Jinhuan said that Young Lady Song came over crying yesterday and complained. After that, the old madam asked someone to stand guard at the door, waiting for the young master to come back. Later, the young master came in but came out again soon after. That’s right. Young Lady Song left after the young master came out. When she left, her eyes were red and swollen from crying, and she looked like she had been greatly wronged.”
An Yun still felt a little confused after listening to Xiao Cui’s report. He thought this Young Lady Song sounded familiar but just couldn’t remember why.
Feeling confused, An Yun asked directly, “Who is this young lady from Song family?”
Xiao Cui didn’t question why An Yun didn’t know about this; she simply told him what she knew, “This Song family is Old Madam Zang’s natal family. Logically speaking, this Young Lady Song is the young master’s cousin.”
Hearing this, An Yun’s hand, which was still playing with Snowball, stopped, but Snowball counterattacked and hugged him.
An Yun remembered that when he went out yesterday, the young lady who had hit someone arrogantly was also surnamed Song. He realized that young lady was Zang Ya’s cousin, and she was the one who had come to complain.
Thinking of the way Zang Ya had been cruel to the girl yesterday, he couldn’t help but tremble. Sure enough, Zang Ya was so ruthless that he didn’t recognize his own relative. If he hadn’t known there was a relationship between them, based on the way he had fought yesterday, An Yun would still think that Zang Ya had a grudge against that girl!
After considering this, An Yun thought of what Zang Ya had done to him yesterday. His face turned ugly for a moment, and he couldn’t help but mutter, “Obviously, it was someone else who provoked him, so how could I be the one who suffered later? It’s so unfair.”
After Xiao Cui finished speaking, she waited nearby. At this moment, listening to An Yun’s muttering, she couldn’t hear him clearly and couldn’t help but ask in confusion, “What’s wrong, fulang? What are you talking about?”
An Yun looked up at Xiao Cui and changed the topic, “Isn’t the relationship between Zang Ya and the Song family not very good?”
Xiao Cui couldn’t answer this question. She just shook her head and said with some regret, “I’m sorry, fulang. With my status, I don’t have information about it, so I don’t know.”
An Yun looked at Xiao Cui’s disappointed and embarrassed expression and felt that his question had gone a bit too far. Xiao Cui was a maid who served him, and she primarily worked in the inner courtyard. How could he know the grudges and conflicts between these families?
An Yun patted Xiao Cui comfortingly, thought of something else, and said to her, as if to divert her attention, “By the way, I saw you learning to read last time. How are you doing with it now?”
When Xiao Cui heard him ask this, her face turned red, and she whispered, “I’m stupid and don’t learn quickly. Now I can barely recognize a few words.”
It had been almost a year since An Yun travelled to this place. During this period, he had experienced a lot and he still had no intention of going back. He felt that he might never be able to return in his life. Since he couldn’t go back, if he wanted to stay here, he still had to learn the skills necessary for survival, and literacy was the most important one.
With the idea of learning in his heart, An Yun looked at the shy Xiao Cui in front of him and said, “In addition to taking care of me, you have other responsibilities on weekdays. No one has taught you and it takes the time to learn new things. It’s already quite impressive that you can recognize some words.”
Xiao Cui felt a little embarrassed when she heard An Yun’s compliment.
An Yun continued, “Show me the book you are studying. Maybe I can give you some advice.”
Xiao Cui’s eyes lit up at this, and she turned around to fetch the book.
When Xiao Cui returned, she handed the book to An Yun, who opened it and glanced through it, becoming somewhat certain of his initial guess.
“These books are too difficult. It’s normal if you don’t understand them. Some people learn the material as soon as they see it.” Still, this type of text without punctuation marks—wasn’t that just making things difficult for people?
An Yun suddenly thought of something and looked up at Xiao Cui. “Wait a minute; I’ll go to the young master and ask if he has any introductory books. I’ll find some for you and see if they are more useful than this one.”
The children of these aristocratic families used carefully selected books for learning, and they had passed down texts that had been approved for many years. They must know how to teach better than a layman like him.
Moreover, if he could give these books to Xiao Cui to learn from, he could also study them and gain a better foothold in this world.
When Xiao Cui heard this, she was shocked and quickly tried to stop him. She was just a maid; how could she waste such precious books from the master’s study?
However, An Yun didn’t give her the chance to protest. She didn’t know what An Yun was thinking. After saying those words, his eyes lit up immediately, and then he rushed toward the door, heading straight for Zang Ya’s study.
After Zang Ya showed how much he cared for An Yun by taking him with him wherever he went, An Yun was able to walk confidently through almost all areas of the mansion, except for a few restricted zones.
Relying on his memory, An Yun made his way to Zang Ya’s study unimpeded, where he found Zang Ya practicing calligraphy, just as he had expected.
If nothing important came up, Zang Ya would study and practice martial arts every day, almost without fail.
When An Yun first learned of this, he had felt a bit surprised, but after thinking it over, he found it normal. After all, the family rules had been passed down for generations. Even if they indulged in daily pleasures, they wouldn’t slack off in this type of upbringing.
Through the half-open window, An Yun saw Zang Ya standing in front of his desk, practicing calligraphy. He wrote with the grace of a dragon and the flow of a snake, completing a large set of characters smoothly.
After the last stroke was finished, Zang Ya put down the pen in his hand, then raised his head and looked in An Yun’s direction, meeting his gaze. “Why are you here now?”
