Chapter 85: Negotiations
As the grand hall slowly emptied, Canna remained seated at the head of the table, deep in thought. The representatives had left, but their offers and promises still echoed in his mind. He leaned back, rubbing his temples as he considered the weight of their proposals.
Kael and Mortem remained by his side, understanding the gravity of the situation. Mortem, ever the loyal servant, broke the silence. "Master, their offers are substantial. Each kingdom and group provides unique advantages. Have you considered which might align best with your goals?"
Canna sighed, leaning forward and resting his chin on his hands. "They all have something valuable to offer, Mortem. Arenthia's military strength, Veridia's magical knowledge, Eldoria's resources and trade connections... even the mercenary groups have their uses. But I don't want to be beholden to anyone. My mission is to revive my domain, not get entangled in their politics."
Kael, sitting across from Canna, nodded thoughtfully. "True, but their help could expedite your mission. We need allies, whether we like it or not. Going at it alone is noble, but it might take longer than we have."
Canna knew Kael was right. He couldn't afford to be too proud or too independent. But the thought of aligning himself with any of these groups made him uneasy. He needed clarity, a moment to think without the pressures of the grand hall weighing on him.
"I can't make a decision right now," Canna admitted. "My mind is too cluttered. I need some fresh air, a different perspective."
Mortem and Kael exchanged glances. "Do you want us to accompany you?" Kael asked.
Canna shook his head. "No, I need to be alone for a while. I'll take a walk around the kingdom, clear my head."
He retrieved a pendant from his pocket, a small but powerful artifact that allowed him to alter his appearance. With a quick incantation, his white hair turned a rich shade of brown. He looked at Mortem and Kael. "This should keep me from being recognized. I'll be back soon."
As he stepped out of the grand hall and into the bustling streets of Avaloria, Canna felt a sense of relief. The noise of the city, the chatter of its people, and the vibrant life around him provided a welcome distraction from the weighty decisions he had to make.
He wandered through the marketplace, observing the vendors peddling their goods, children playing in the streets, and families enjoying their evening. The normalcy of it all was comforting. He bought a piece of fruit from a vendor and continued his walk, savoring the simple pleasure.
After a while, he found himself in a quieter part of the city, near a small park. The sound of laughter drew his attention to a group of children playing a game with a ball. Their joy was infectious, and he couldn't help but smile.
As he watched, an elderly woman approached him. "You seem lost in thought, young man. Care to share what's on your mind?"
Canna turned to her, surprised by her directness. "Just trying to figure out some things. Big decisions to make."
The woman nodded, her eyes wise and kind. "Life is full of big decisions. Sometimes, it's best to look at them from a different angle. What's troubling you?"

Canna hesitated, then decided to share. "I have to choose between several powerful allies, each offering something different. It's overwhelming."
The woman chuckled softly. "Sounds like a good problem to have. But remember, the best ally is the one that respects your independence and shares your vision. Have you thought about what you truly need, not just what they're offering?"
Canna pondered her words. "I need knowledge and resources to revive my domain. But I don't want to be bound by anyone else's agenda."
She nodded. "Then choose the path that gives you the most freedom to achieve your goals. Allies should support you, not control you."
Her words resonated with him. He thanked her and continued his walk, feeling a bit lighter. The park led him to a small fountain, where he sat down to think. The sound of water, the cool evening breeze, and the distant chatter of people helped clear his mind.
As he sat there, he realized that the key was balance. He could accept help without losing his independence. He needed to set clear terms and boundaries with whichever ally he chose. This way, he could leverage their strengths while staying true to his mission.
Feeling more focused, Canna decided it was time to head back. He made his way through the streets, his mind clearer and his resolve stronger. He returned to the palace, where Mortem and Kael awaited him.
"Did you find the clarity you were seeking?" Kael asked.
Canna nodded. "Yes, I did. We need allies, but on our terms. We'll accept help from those who respect our independence and share our vision."
Mortem smiled, his hollow eyes reflecting approval. "A wise decision, master."
The next day, Canna called for another meeting with the representatives. As they gathered once more in the grand hall, he stood before them with confidence.
"I have considered your offers," Canna began, his voice steady and commanding. "I appreciate your willingness to help. However, I will only accept alliances that respect my independence and support my mission without imposing their own agendas."
The representatives listened intently, their expressions a mix of curiosity and respect.
"Arenthia," Canna continued, "your military strength is valuable, but I will not become a pawn in your strategies. If you can offer support without strings attached, we have a deal."
General Alaric nodded, a hint of admiration in his eyes. "Agreed. We will support you as you see fit. In return, your assistance in key military engagements and any strategic information you acquire will be invaluable to us."
"Veridia," Canna addressed Grand Mage Lysandra, "your knowledge of nature magic is crucial. I welcome your scholars' assistance, but my mission remains my own."
Lysandra smiled, a spark of excitement in her eyes. "Understood. We will aid you with no expectations in return. However, any rare magical artifacts you come across would be of great interest to us."
"Eldoria," Canna said, turning to Prince Zachary, "your resources and trade networks can expedite my journey. But I will not be bound by any trade agreements that compromise my independence."
Prince Zachary bowed slightly. "Consider it done. Our resources are at your disposal, with no obligations. In exchange, we hope to establish exclusive trade routes and economic partnerships that will benefit both our interests."
The mercenary groups watched silently, understanding that Canna's terms applied to them as well. Marcus and Raven exchanged glances, then nodded in agreement.
With the terms set and the alliances formed, Canna felt a sense of accomplishment. He had navigated the complexities of politics and emerged with his independence intact.
As the representatives left the hall, Kael approached Canna, a proud smile on his face. "You handled that brilliantly."
Canna chuckled. "Thanks, Kael. It wasn't easy, but I think we've set the right course."
Mortem and Vorgrim joined them, their loyalty unwavering. "What are your orders, master?" Mortem asked.
Canna took a deep breath, his eyes filled with determination. "We begin our journey to find the races that specializes with nature magic. With our new allies, we have the support we need. It's time to revive my domain and fulfill our mission."
