Reborn in the Post-Apocalyptic World: Building Infrastructure

Chapter 59: Little Zombie

Several people stopped at once, and they could see the horror in each other's eyes.

At this moment, the cry sounded again.

The sound became a bit clearer, indeed resembling a child's crying.

It sounded like a child of only a few years old.

With his ability, Han Qiang's courage had grown, and he couldn't help but say, "Sister Su Ling, let's go and take a look."

Su Ling hesitated and looked towards Professor Bai.

After all, he was the oldest among them.

Feeling guilty for not being able to save Li Xueying and Su Rou, Professor Bai nodded immediately when they sought his opinion.

"Go, it should be safe during the day. If we encounter zombies, we'll leave immediately."

Su Ling sighed. "Alright, everyone be careful. If anything seems off, we leave right away."

Han Qiang nodded and walked toward the source of the sound.

They walked through a collapsed staircase and saw a damaged building. Only two floors remained, and the eerie cry was coming from inside the building.

From the appearance, it seemed to be a former residential house, and although the building doors were gone, the structure of the building was still intact.

Cautiously, they entered the corridor and immediately spotted a residence. The security door was tightly closed, and the eerie sound was coming from inside.

Han Qiang leaned over to listen and nodded.

"It's here."

Professor Bai also leaned over. "Seems like a child. Maybe the adults went out to search for supplies. Should we break the door open?"

As soon as Professor Bai finished speaking, Su Ling felt a cold sensation against the back of her neck, as if something was pressed against it.

A gloomy voice sounded from behind.

"Who are you, and what are you doing here?"

Su Ling immediately raised her hands, feeling that it must be a crossbow pressed against her neck.

Startled, Professor Bai and the others turned around and saw a tall and skinny man.

He looked to be around thirty years old, with dark and rough skin, as if he had been doing labor-intensive work for a long time. He held a homemade crossbow and had a pair of bloodshot eyes, cold and icy, completely devoid of any emotions that one would expect to see in a fellow survivor.

Professor Bai quickly raised his hands too.

"Don't be alarmed. We mean no harm. We heard the crying of a child and thought there might be survivors."

The man moved the crossbow away slightly and spoke in a gloomy tone, "Indeed, there are survivors. The child inside is my son."

Su Ling breathed a sigh of relief and turned to ask, "We heard the child crying. Is he sick?"

As she spoke, the cry from inside resounded again.

Su Ling suddenly felt goosebumps all over her body.

She couldn't find words to describe the sound.

It seemed like the howl of a wild wolf, mixed with the screech of an owl, with a hint of a child's voice.

Her heart skipped a beat, and she looked in astonishment at the man.

Could it be that inside...

Professor Bai stopped and spoke kindly, "Don't be nervous. This young lady is a doctor. If the child is feeling unwell, you can bring him out, and Doctor Su can take a look."

The man turned his face towards Su Ling, and there was a brief flicker of emotion in his dead eyes.

Then, he said impatiently, "Cut the crap, hurry up and get lost."

Seeing that this man was unappreciative and dangerous, Su Ling immediately gave Professor Bai a signal with her eyes. "Professor Bai, let's go."

Just as she turned around, she was startled by what she saw in front of her.

At the entrance of the building, three zombies were swaying and walking inside.

"Damn it, zombies! When did they get here?"

Chen Yu cursed and quickly moved behind Han Qiang.

Then, another howl sounded from inside the room, and the zombies outside seemed to be called by some unseen force, rushing towards them.

"Han Qiang, use your ability quickly!"

Su Ling said and grabbed Professor Bai, running towards the stairs.

The mysterious man was also startled. He shot an arrow at the approaching zombies and then shouted at Su Ling, "You can't go upstairs! The staircase has collapsed significantly and can't support the weight of two people."

Su Ling stopped halfway up the stairs.

In the corridor, Han Qiang had already released his fire ability.

However, due to extreme nervousness, he only shot out a small flame about the size of a palm.

The man immediately glanced at him and his eyes flickered, "An ability user?"

In the meantime, he shot two more arrows at the zombies.

The zombies paused slightly before rushing towards them again.

Seeing no way to escape, Han Qiang couldn't help but curse, "Damn it, I'll fight you!"

He stretched out his hand, and a tongue of fire shot out from his palm, burning the three zombies, causing them to pause again.

However, before the group could catch their breath, the moaning of zombies came from outside the staircase again.

Han Qiang attempted to use his fire ability again, but the man stopped him, glancing at him hesitantly, and quickly said, "Fire will attract more zombies. Let's go inside first."

After speaking, the man opened the door, and Su Ling and the others had no other choice but to follow him inside.

A foul smell filled the room, and Su Ling's stomach churned violently. Then she witnessed a shocking scene.

A three or four-year-old boy was bound to a chair by two iron chains, emitting whimpering cries.

His face was pale and blue, his eyes bloodshot, and saliva dripped from his mouth like that of a wild beast. He had clearly turned into a zombie.

Seeing the group enter the room, he let out a piercing scream.

Su Ling couldn't help but take a cold breath. She had suspected there were zombies inside, and now it seemed that this was indeed the man's son.

Professor Bai was also startled. "Zombies!"

The man's face immediately darkened. "Be careful with your words. This is my son."

He then approached the little zombie and spoke to him in a soft and gentle voice, "Xiao Ye, stop making noise. Daddy brought meat for you."

He took out a piece of bloody meat from his pocket and placed it on the table.

The boy immediately started tearing into it ferociously.

Su Ling managed to keep herself composed; after all, she was a doctor and had seen many bloody scenes. Though she felt a bit uncomfortable, it wasn't anything special. However, Chen Yu covered his mouth and nearly vomited.

Han Qiang also sucked in a mouthful of cold air. He had seen scenes of people keeping zombies from movies, but he never thought he would witness it in reality.

The man seemed displeased with Chen Yu's reaction, and his gaze turned menacing.

"What's the matter? Do you think my son is dirty?"

Seeing him raise his crossbow at Chen Yu, Han Qiang immediately raised his hands.

"What do you want to do?"
