Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Destination—Mt. Moon!
Ron strolled along the path with a spring in his step.
Just as he had planned, his Beautifly managed to break through the Gym battle, securing his first badge after taking down two opponents in a row.
Next, Ron had two goals in mind: Viridian City and Cerulean City.
After a brief moment of consideration, Ron decided to forgo Viridian City for now.
He had only just begun his undercover mission, achieving minor results so far. Even if he visited Viridian City now, earning a badge there would be relatively easy.
However, if he saved Viridian City for last, his strength and other capabilities would undoubtedly improve significantly by then. At that point, he might not only earn the badge but also secure some valuable resources.
Weighing the pros and cons, Ron determined that heading to Cerulean City was the better choice for the moment.
On the way to Cerulean City, there was one particular location that caught Ron's interest: Mt. Moon.
Mt. Moon was known not only for hosting rare Pokémon like Clefairy but also for containing Moon Stones and hidden fossils.
In the anime, a tribe of Clefairy in Mt. Moon was depicted as possessing a massive Moon Stone.
As for that colossal Moon Stone, Ron had no real desire to claim it.
For one thing, he couldn't believe that a tribe of Clefairy with access to such a large Moon Stone wouldn't have some formidable Pokémon among them.
It was important to remember that there were differences between the anime and real life; had Ron acted strictly based on the anime, he likely wouldn't have survived his trials so far.
Aside from the enormous Moon Stone, Ron's goals were simple: see if he could find some valuable fossils or Moon Stones.
The League offered several missions related to resource collection.
Even a standard-grade Moon Stone—the most basic quality—was worth 50 contribution points, equivalent to defeating an elite wild Pokémon during a riot.
As for fossils, their value varied greatly depending on their rarity, with no fixed standard.
Despite this variability, the allure of contribution points prompted Ron to decide to spend some time at Mt. Moon.
Ron was eager to exchange enough contribution points for an extremely rare-grade Life Orb—the highest quality—for his Nidoran. He wasn't about to let any opportunities slip by.
This demonstrated just how scarce high-quality items could be.
For reference, item quality was divided into four tiers: Standard, Rare, Valuable, and Extremely Rare-Grade.
Take the Life Orb, for example. A Standard-grade one cost 1,000 contribution points, a Rare-grade one required 5,000 points, a Valuable-grade one cost even more, and the Extremely Rare-grade one Ron wanted had an astronomical price.
Different items varied in point requirements, but equipping all of one's Pokémon with top-tier items was undeniably an expensive endeavor.
It was no wonder Ron kept thinking about it constantly.
Additionally, Mt. Moon could be considered a level-up zone akin to a dungeon in the games.
Beyond the uncertain treasures hidden there, the area was also filled with wild Pokémon that could provide training opportunities for Machoke and the others.
Nearly all trainers traveling through Kanto would visit Mt. Moon, hoping for a stroke of luck.
At that moment, however, a group of people was ruthlessly capturing the wild Pokémon of Mt. Moon.
The wild Pokémon, typically around Level 10–20, were no match for them. Defeated with ease, they were promptly locked away in Poké Balls.
Occasionally, they encountered trainers attempting to train in the area, but these trainers were just as mercilessly defeated.
This group's sweeping actions left Mt. Moon, once teeming with life, feeling desolate.
Under these circumstances, Ron and his team arrived at the base of Mt. Moon.
"Let's move. Stay alert from now on," Ron instructed.
"Nidoran, this is especially important for you. Our target is the depths of Mt. Moon. Avoid unnecessary fights unless attacked."
Before beginning the ascent, Ron made sure to give these reminders.
Thanks to their previous battle at the Pokémon Center, Nidoran had reached Level 15, just one step away from evolution.
What Nidoran needed now was to build momentum and then break through to Level 16 for a successful evolution.
This meant the spotlight for this trip would be on Machoke and the others, with the goal of leveling them up.
To Ron's surprise, Mt. Moon initially seemed devoid of the wild Pokémon he expected to encounter. Considering the frequency with which trainers visited, this felt unusual.
Feeling something was amiss, Ron quickly shifted into trial mode, cautiously observing his surroundings. Persian climbed to a higher vantage point to scout the area.
"Meow!"
Persian's cry caught Ron's attention. He rushed over to Persian's location, where he found a pool of uncleaned blood.
If this had been deeper in Mt. Moon, such an occurrence wouldn't have been unusual.
But this was still the outskirts of the area, where wild Pokémon were generally low-leveled, and trainers' Pokémon tended to be around Level 10–20.
With such a small level gap, most trainers wouldn't be reckless enough to risk losing; they would likely retreat if outmatched.
Combined with the strange absence of wild Pokémon, Ron began forming a theory and set about verifying it.
To avoid unforeseen complications, Ron took additional precautions.
With these safeguards in place, Ron continued searching with Machoke and Persian, keeping Bellossom and Nidoran in their Poké Balls to reduce the risk of detection.
"How many Pokémon have we captured so far?"
Watching as two more Geodude collapsed, Kai asked his team.
"Captain, we've captured 100 Pokémon so far," one of the record-keepers promptly replied.
"Good. Keep going. Once we reach 500 Pokémon, we'll leave this place immediately."
Satisfied with their progress, Kai nodded approvingly.
Incidentally, Kai and Ron had crossed paths before.
The recent Pokémon riot had been orchestrated by Kai's Vine Poachers, though it had ultimately ended in failure.
To make up for their losses, Kai and the other leaders of the Vine Poachers were now acting separately, exploiting the recovery efforts of rangers following the riot to their advantage.
Kai had lucked out with the lucrative Mt. Moon operation. Despite the higher capture quota compared to other assignments, the dense population of Pokémon at Mt. Moon made it manageable.
As Kai's group pressed on, Ron was drawing ever closer to their location.
