Chapter 8 – The white-bearded shark
On the morning of the second day, Kado and Fite steered their pirate ship towards the designated location set by the Chef Alliance.
Their ship was still the medium-sized sailboat Kado had acquired in Fireworks Town, and he had named it the "Kado."
Upon arriving at the designated waters of the Chef Alliance, they were greeted by a breathtaking sight: rows of various ships lined up like a fleet preparing for battle, reminiscent of ancient naval conflicts. The scene was truly magnificent.
"Wow, there are so many ships! How did I not notice that Loguetown has gathered this many? I bet even the Navy wouldn't dare to provoke so many pirates!"
Standing at the bow, Kado gazed excitedly at the seemingly endless line of vessels on the sea.
"Oh, by the way, do you think some pirates might have already caught their ingredients and are hiding them on their ships, just waiting to pull them out during the competition?" Kado turned to Fite and asked.
"Probably not. Today is the Spring Festival, and the rare fish from all four seas only start gathering around Roguetown on this day. At other times, even if you can catch some ingredients, they won't compare to the abundance during the fish migration," Fite explained.
"The fish migration only happens during these days? No wonder the Chef Alliance holds the hunting competition now. They really know what they're doing!" Kado exclaimed. "The legendary fish migration must be a spectacular sight! I can't wait to see all the different rare species!"
"Ha, just focus on the competition. The Chef Alliance has already gotten many warriors ready," Fite pointed to a tall tower by the shore where red flags were waving.
Kado followed Fite's finger point toward the tall tower, where people were signaling with flags, instructing the pirates to get ready.
"Hoist the anchor, set the sails, prepare to set off!" Kado shouted, directing Fite as they made the necessary preparations.
Once the Kado was ready, the flags on the tower suddenly changed to indicate forward motion.
"Quick, quick, let's go!"
The crowd erupted with excitement as the sea came alive with the sound of numerous ships, each sailing like arrows toward the deep ocean. Kado and Fite were no exception, powering the Kado forward to claim prime fishing grounds.
"Hey, Fite, come look!" Kado leaned over the side of the ship, shouting excitedly, "Look at the sea floor here—so many fish! Our ship is practically gliding over a school of them!"
Fite hurried over to the side of the ship, peering down at the sea. Sure enough, a massive school of fish swam past Kado's ship, creating a pathway of shimmering scales that stretched into the distance.
"What kind of fish is this? Is it valuable enough for us to win the championship?" Kado asked, holding up a small fish he had somehow caught from the water.
Fite adjusted his glasses, took the fish from Kado, and examined it closely. "This is a type of bluefin tuna from the West Sea. While it's considered a delicacy at other times, during the migration, it's quite common. Relying on this to win the championship is pretty much impossible."
"Oh, really? So this little fish isn't useful at all. Let's hurry and chase after other schools of fish; we can't let anyone beat us to them!" Kado pointed towards a distant ship full of pirates speeding along.
"Slow down, there's no rush. The hunting competition lasts for three whole days," Fite replied calmly. "Even if others snag some valuable ingredients first, we have plenty of time to take them from their hands."
After sailing for a while, Kado's ship, the Kado, had traveled quite a distance. The town of Loguetown was now just a small dot on the horizon, and the number of pirate ships on the sea had thinned out significantly.
Suddenly, a large splash erupted nearby, and a massive fish head broke the surface before quickly disappearing back into the water.
"Whitebeard Shark!" Kado shouted excitedly.
"Did you see that? It was a Whitebeard Shark! We need to hurry and head in that direction. Catching a Whitebeard Shark is a rare opportunity! If we manage to get one, we're sure to win the championship!"
The moment the other pirate ships spotted the Whitebeard Shark, chaos erupted. All the vessels turned toward the spot where the shark had surfaced, racing eagerly to get there first.
Kado quickly took charge, directing Fite to steer the Kado toward where the shark had just appeared. The thrill of the chase ignited a fire in Kado's heart; this was their chance to shine!
Dozens of pirate ships raced toward the location of the Whitebeard Shark, each one speeding ahead without a care for potential collisions. The excitement and desperation of the hunt took over.
"Let them go first," Fite said calmly. "If it gets too chaotic, we can wait until they catch it, then take it from them."
Kado hesitated but trusted Fite's judgment as they slowed the Kado down, allowing the frenzy of ships to charge ahead.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed across the water. Two pirate ships collided violently, one slightly smaller vessel nearly flipping over, its hull creaking under the force. Chaos erupted as crew members scrambled to regain control, and shouts filled the air.
"See? This is exactly what I was worried about," Fite said, keeping a watchful eye on the unfolding chaos. "We'll wait for the right moment."
"Ha ha! You little boats think you can challenge my Sea Bear? Now you know who the boss is!" A burly man stood at the bow of his massive ship, laughing heartily as he looked down at the wrecked smaller vessel.
"Brothers, attack! They dare to damage our ship! Let's take theirs!" shouted a young man from the damaged boat, rallying his comrades to leap toward the larger ship in an attempt to seize it.
Chaos erupted as the crews of both ships clashed, weapons drawn. Shouts, curses, and cries of pain mixed with the sounds of clashing steel echoed across the water, creating a cacophony of battle.
The sight of the struggle inspired the other pirates. With the Whitebeard Shark still swimming free, everyone knew that whoever captured it would be the winner. Suddenly, cannon fire erupted from multiple ships, and a full-blown melee broke out, turning the once calm waters into a swirling tempest of chaos.
"Great! This is exciting! We rarely see such a spectacle!" Kado shouted, rushing toward the helm.
"We shouldn't get involved. Keep an eye on the water! The cannon fire will scare the Whitebeard Shark away; we can't let it escape!" Fite quickly reminded the eager Kado.
"Ha ha! I'm not an idiot; I know that!" Kado pointed to the water just a few dozen meters from the chaotic battle. "Look! The Whitebeard Shark is swimming in this direction! Let's go after it and let those guys fight it out!"
Fite nodded; he had confidence in Kado's keen eyes. While Kado's vision might not be as sharp as his own, he had an uncanny ability to spot things that others overlooked.
What Fite didn't realize was that Kado's heightened perception was a direct result of his speed enhancement. Ever since his ability had improved, Kado had noticed a significant boost in his mental reflexes, allowing him to see subtle details that often went unnoticed.
Following Kado's indicated direction, the Kado ship picked up speed.
"Oh, it seems we're not the only clever ones here," Kado remarked, noticing another ship heading toward the direction where the Whitebeard Shark had vanished. "Wait, that pirate flag looks familiar. I think I've seen it somewhere."
"That ship belongs to Carter Fily. He's the captain of the Blackbone Pirates, with a bounty of 42 million!" Fite's tone grew serious as he recognized the threat. He hadn't expected to encounter such a formidable opponent so soon after setting sail.
Meanwhile, on the bow of the Blackbone Pirate ship, two figures were watching the Kado ship.
"Captain Fily, that ship belongs to the East Blue bounty hunter, Saint Hand Kado. He's quite well-known and not someone to be underestimated," said a gaunt figure respectfully to the man before him.
"Saint Hand Kaido, is he the big cat burglar who only bullies small pirates and steals from big pirates? This guy is just a coward without the guts. Get the sharpshooters ready; I'm going to blow this pirate thief, who is hated by pirates, to smithereens," the middle-aged man, known as Fily, issued the order fiercely.
"Yes, Captain Fily."
The emaciated guy respectfully retreated, issuing the order to fire at the Kado.
