Chapter 5: The Journey
The next morning, Kado woke up early, filled with excitement. His enhanced recovery ability gave him extraordinary recuperative powers, and he wondered if the strength enhancement would lead to a significant boost in his abilities. Imagining a bright future, he eagerly ordered Nine Dimension to check his body.
"Beep beep…"
The red gem flashed a few times, indicating that the scan was complete.
"Scan complete. Physical fitness: average. Physical condition: fair. Dao power: 133 points. Special ability: unknown…"
Hearing that his Dao power was still 133 points, Kado felt a bit disheartened. It seemed that the strength enhancement didn't directly increase his power but manifested in another way.
What could that be? Kado pondered over the phrase he had just heard and suddenly realized.
"Special ability: unknown!"
What was that? Did he gain some kind of special power after the enhancement? Could it be the ability of a Devil Fruit? Thinking about this possibility, Kado couldn't help but fantasize. If it really was a Devil Fruit power, he would have hit the jackpot.
Sitting up, Kado hurriedly moved his limbs, eager to see what changes had occurred in his body.
After bouncing around for a while, nothing unusual happened. He only felt a vague layer surrounding him, something he couldn't quite confirm.
After thinking it over, he decided to experiment. He picked up a cross and pressed it against his chest.
"Hiss…"
Kado gasped as a sharp pain shot through his chest, no different from normal. It seemed he didn't possess any remarkable abilities.
Since attacking himself yielded no change, what about attacking something else? With that thought, Kado jumped out of bed and suddenly stomped his foot down onto the ground.
At that moment, he felt the vague force around him condense toward his toes, and with all his might, he slammed it into the ground.
"Boom…"
With a loud crash, the ground shook violently, dust swirling and covering Kado's foot.
Excited, Kado pulled back his foot, ignoring the dust on his face, and carefully examined the ground.
Before him was a deep footprint, the surrounding earth cracked and shattered, with fissures radiating outward. Kado was both thrilled and astonished; he hadn't expected that vague sensation to be so powerful, resulting in such an impact when applied to his foot.
After his initial joy, Kado quickly calmed down, wanting to fully experience this vague feeling.
Standing still for quite some time, he furrowed his brows. The vague sensation had vanished, and he could no longer feel any unusual changes.
"Could it be that I used too much energy, draining all my special powers at once, which is why I can't sense anything?"
After some thought, Kado realized this was quite likely. According to the law of conservation of energy, the force he had just expended would indeed have been considerable, yet he hadn't felt fatigued at all. It seemed he had tapped into the power surrounding his body.
As he contemplated the nature of this power, an incredible idea suddenly struck him.
The destruction he caused with his stomp reminded him of the way the warrior women on Amazon Lily in One Piece infused their arrows with Haki. Could it be that the strength enhancement meant reinforcing his Haki? More specifically, enhancing his Armament Haki! This realization was no small deal.
If strength enhancement boosted Armament Haki, then what about speed enhancement? What would that entail? It was certain that it wouldn't enhance Observation Haki, and certainly not Conqueror's Haki. Kado still didn't have a deep understanding of Haki, and in his mind, it seemed impossible for something like that to exist. However, since he possessed Armament Haki, other forms of Haki must exist as well. How could he discover and utilize them?
Such questions were too profound; without a teacher to guide him, Kado might never uncover the mysteries of Haki. After pondering for a moment, he decided to set these thoughts aside.
Having checked everything he needed to, Kado realized he couldn't stay in the villagers' home forever. He got dressed, opened the door, and stepped outside.
As he opened the door, gentle sunlight flooded in, lifting his spirits after days without seeing the sun.
Villagers bustled along the street, and as they spotted Kado, they greeted him with smiles, praising his bravery. They assured him he would grow up to be a strong man.
This feeling of being noticed and respected was new to Kado. In his past life as a thief, he was lucky if people didn't curse him; being praised was out of the question. He had to admit, being complimented felt great. It seemed that doing good deeds really did bring rewards.
Feeling pleased, Kado rubbed his nose and followed the villagers' directions to the mayor's residence. He had heard the mayor wanted to speak to him, likely to thank him for saving the town.
The mayor's home wasn't far, and a few minutes later, Kado was invited in for breakfast. The mayor, like most town leaders in One Piece, had the appearance of an elderly man, suggesting that positions like village chief or town mayor were held by respected figures.
After breakfast, the mayor stepped into another room and brought out a large pile of belongings—things that once belonged to Kado but had been kept safe by the mayor while he was injured.
After returning the items, the mayor pulled out an envelope from his pocket and handed it to Kado, saying, "Inside is 500,000 Berries. Please, you must accept it."
"500,000 Berries? No, no… how can I accept this?" Kado shook his head repeatedly. "I'm not a pirate; I can't take your money!"
"Ha ha, this was always yours," the mayor smiled. "After you defeated Uta, the Navy showed up. A Captain named 'Doro' brought a bounty of 200,000 Berries for Uta. He asked me to tell you that once you're healed, you can find him at the Navy's 16th Division. He really admires your courage and hopes you can join the Navy. The other 300,000 Berries is my personal gift to you. If you hadn't beaten Uta, our town would have suffered losses in the tens of millions of Berries. Compared to that, 300,000 isn't much. Our town isn't very large or wealthy, so that's all I can offer. Also, I've prepared a ship for you. If you want to go home or join the Navy, you can use my ship. I'm getting old, and my health doesn't allow me to go out to sea anymore. Giving you this ship will let me enjoy my later years without worrying about it."
After some more polite refusals, Kado accepted the mayor's kindness. He really needed a ship; his previous small rowboat was barely seaworthy. Even a moderate wave could capsize it.
Declining the mayor's offer to rest a few more days in the town, Kado set off for the dock, surrounded by the villagers. His injuries were nearly healed, and he was pressed for time—he needed to gain the strength to defeat Arlong within five years, and there was no time to waste.
At the dock, a medium-sized sailboat was moored, just slightly smaller than Luffy's Going Merry, but more than adequate for Kado's needs.
As he stepped into the cabin, Kado was surprised—the boat looked hardly aged, almost brand new. It was clear the mayor had taken great care of it, cleaning and maintaining it regularly.
After bidding farewell to the villagers, Kado set sail with the gentle breeze at his back, embarking on an unpredictable journey—truly beginning a thrilling fate.
