Chapter 4: The First Battle
"Che, look at that little brat over there," Uta waved to a burly man beside him. "Old Eight, go teach him a lesson and make him see some sense."
The man known as Old Eight chuckled, cracking his knuckles ominously as he walked toward Kado.
Kado nervously watched as the hulking figure approached, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. Perhaps because of Kado's young age, the man sheathed his steel knife and approached Kado with bare hands.
Kado took a few deep breaths to steady himself, focusing intently on the hulking man's every move, his heart pounding as the earlier excitement faded away.
"Take this, brat!"
The burly man shouted, his fist—like a giant sandbag—suddenly smashing down toward Kado's small frame.
Kado froze in place, instinctively raising his arm to block the descending punch.
"Thud!"
A sound like a hammer striking tattered cloth rang out as Kado staggered backward a few steps, feeling puzzled. The burly man's powerful punch hadn't inflicted much pain—just a bit of soreness in his arm.
At that moment, Kado realized that although his body was small, his physical capabilities were ten times that of an average person. He shouldn't be worry of himself; it was them he should worry about.
"Kid, got some tough bones, huh?" The burly man shook his arm a few times, clearly feeling the impact from his own punch.
"Let's see how tough you really are!"
The burly man lunged at Cado once more, but this time he was using both hands to try and grab him.
"Ah, ah..."
Kado shouted to boost his courage, launching his fist like a straight spear toward the burly man. The man's arm came up just in time to meet Kado's punch.
"Crack, crack!"
"Ah, it hurts!"
After the two sharp sounds, the burly man let out a loud howl of pain, his arm twisting into an unnatural shape—clearly broken from the impact.
Kado stood there in shock, unable to believe that his punch had such power, breaking the burly man's arm in one hit.
The pirates and villagers in the square stared wide-eyed, their mouths agape, momentarily unable to process what had just happened.
Uta, as the leader of the pirates, was quick to react. He shouted to his subordinates, "This kid is something else! Everyone, get him together!"
After saying that, he took the lead and drew his large sword to lunge at Kado.
Kado watched in disbelief as a dozen ferocious men charged toward him, unable to help but back away repeatedly, unsure of what to do.
A flash of gleaming steel cut through the air.
Kado sucked in a mouthful of cool air, his chest had already been slashed open by Uta, if he hadn't dodged quickly, this blade would have definitely split him into pieces.
The sudden pain jolted Kado back to reality. He realized that it was now a fight for survival—either he would die, or he would live. He couldn't hesitate any longer; he had to fight back with everything he had.
Screaming like a madman, Kado dodged Utar's massive blade and lunged at a nearby burly man.
The burly man, seeing Kado run up in panic, gave a cold smile, swung his big knife horizontally, and aimed to cleave Lado in half.
Kado's height barely reached the burly man's chest. He ducked low to evade the descending blade and charged straight into the man with his body.
"Thud"
Kado and the burly man were sent flying several meters away in an instant, rolling a few more meters on the ground. Kado lifted his head from the burly man's embrace. The burly man beneath him coughed repeatedly, blood spraying from his mouth in arcs, splattering onto Kado. It was clear he wouldn't survive.
"I killed someone!"
A buzzing sound echoed in Kado's mind, and the world before him turned blood red, leaving only the fierce and painful expression of the strong man before his death.
"Kid, you dare to kill my brother, I'll skin you alive!"
Uta and the remaining pirates, with blood-red eyes, roared and charged towards the terrified Kado.
A few meters of distance were just a few strides, and Uta's big knife slashed across Kado's chest, leaving a long trail of blood.
The wound on his chest had already injured his internal organs, and the blood gushing from Kado's mouth, along with the sudden wetness in his throat and the blood-red world before him, stimulated Kado's nerves.
"Killing one is killing, killing a group is still killing. They are all scum and deserve to die."
Such a voice suddenly emerged in Kado's mind. The tempting voice finally made Kado lose control, drawing the large knife from the side of the dead strongman, and, like a beast, he howled as he swung it towards Uta.
A blade gleaming with a hint of blood-red light flashed down from above Uta's head, and an arm fell to the ground along with Uta's mournful howl. The strike was as swift as lightning; Uta barely had time to move half a step before the large blade instantly severed his arm, leaving it hanging by his hip, nearly cutting off half of his thigh.
"Ah, my hand, my hand, hurry up and kill him for me."
Uta fell to the ground, one hand clutching his shoulder where blood flowed incessantly. Rolling around and wailing loudly, he still shouted orders to his underlings to kill Kado.
In Kado's hand, a steel knife slowly dripped with a tragic red, forming a small pit on the ground. Two intersecting wounds on his chest formed a slanted cross, with flesh peeling away from the edges of the wounds, revealing faint glimpses of white bone.
Uta was just a bounty pirate worth two hundred thousand, and his crew consisted of weak-willed lackeys—merely a bunch of thugs. They usually bullied ordinary people and had never witnessed such brutal scenes before, their faces now filled with fear as they stood frozen in place.
"Run away!"
Someone shouted, and a dozen adults turned and fled in panic from a single child.
Seeing this scene unfold, Uta fainted, unable to tell whether it was from pain or anger.
After the pirates fled, Kado's body could no longer hold on. He fell back, hitting the ground hard and kicking up a cloud of dust.
As the dust settled, a faint smile appeared at the corner of Kado's mouth. "I won!"
This was his first victory, not just for the bounty of two hundred thousand berries, but it also gave him a sense of confidence—confidence to carve out a name for himself in the world of pirates. The first battle, the first kill; it wasn't an overwhelming victory, nor was it the casual ease of taking a life. It was heavy, but he had won.
It took the villagers a while to process what had happened, and then they erupted into joyful cheers. Tears of gratitude welled up in the eyes of the elders.
"Quick, quick, get a doctor! Hurry and save him!"
The middle-aged man who had pleaded for the elderly shouted loudly as he hurried toward Kado's bloodied body.
When Kado finally regained consciousness several days later, he was hit by a burning hunger. His stomach protested once more, but fortunately, there were villagers watching over him; otherwise, he might have starved.
Once the villagers heard that Kado was awake and wanted to eat, every household brought a bounty of delicious food.
Kado devoured it ravenously, eating for nearly half a day before finally feeling full.
After satisfying his hunger, Kado slumped lazily in a chair to rest. He felt his strength returning, and he realized he was much stronger than before. The wound on his chest hurt less, and as he touched the bandage, he could tell it had begun to heal and scar over. Kado couldn't help but marvel at his recovery ability—if he trained harder, could he become an invincible force?
Thinking of this, he felt an urge to test his current physical condition with a cross, but looking around at the villagers filling the room, he restrained himself from pulling it out.
He informed the villagers that he was okay now but felt a bit tired and hoped to rest for a while.
The villagers, of course, did not refuse their benefactor's request. Before long, the place was left spotless. However, the discussions among a few villagers as they left made Kado chuckle wryly. They called him a monster, marveling at how he could recover from such severe injuries after just a few days of rest and consume such a large amount of food—truly a superhero in their eyes.
Once the villagers had departed, Kado picked up the cross and said, "Nine Dimensions, help me check my body."
"Beep beep..."
A series of red gems lit up, flashing one after another before finally coming to a stop.
"Detection complete. Physical quality: average. Physical condition: weak. Energy points: 133."
"In the new area, special energy: 486 stars collected, 48 stars gathered. Current remaining energy: 56 stars. You can enhance your body. Would you like to proceed with the enhancement? There are three options: strength enhancement, speed…"
A series of announcements echoed in his mind, and Kado felt a rush of excitement. Indeed, fighting was the best way to increase his power. This battle had boosted his energy points by 29, equivalent to more than half a year of training. How could he not be thrilled?
"Proceed with strength enhancement."
After the initial excitement, Kado issued the command in his mind, selecting strength enhancement. After making his choice, he waited patiently. During his last enhancement, he had been unconscious and didn't know what it was like. This time, he was determined to experience it fully.
"Beep beep… Strength enhancement initiating. Please prepare."
After the prompt, just as Kado was waiting for the enhancement, he suddenly felt darkness enveloping him, a violent dizziness crashing over him. He couldn't help but faint once more.
"Damn it, can't I just enjoy the fun of the enhancement for once?"
With that last thought, Kado drifted into a deep sleep.
