Chapter 154: Chapter 152: A Trap?
Chapter 152: A Trap?
Seeing Danzo move closer to Baku, Baishi narrowed his eyes and muttered, "As expected, something's off!"
Although Danzo appeared to be making a desperate last stand, Baishi didn't buy it. He was certain that Danzo had kept Baku for a specific purpose.
With this preconception, Baishi immediately noticed Danzo's subtle movements.
Without hesitation, Baishi raised his hands, quickly formed seals, and unleashed Dust Release: Atomic Dismantling Jutsu.
A small, transparent cubic barrier materialized between his hands.
With a simple push, the cube seemed to teleport, instantly appearing in front of Danzo.
The cube rapidly expanded, enclosing Danzo before he could react.
A blinding white light burst forth, obliterating everything within range—trees, grass, and even the soil beneath, leaving behind a smooth, hollowed-out pit.
But this wasn't enough to kill Danzo.
When he reappeared, Danzo stood intact, now closer to Baku.
Izanagi had once again saved his life, allowing him to reappear at a location of his choosing within the vicinity, making it impossible to corner him.
Frustration flickered across Baishi's face. While he could stop Danzo's approach to Baku momentarily, Izanagi's abilities rendered any such attempts futile. Even if he didn't act, Danzo could simply force his way closer by ending his own life to trigger another "resurrection."
"Now, let's see what you're up to," Baishi murmured.
The moment he thought this, Danzo manipulated Baku to swallow him whole.
This familiar scene made Baishi suspect a particular possibility.
In the next instant, Baku vanished along with Danzo.
Baishi focused his senses on the Flying Thunder God mark he'd left on Danzo. Sure enough, the mark was gone.
"There's only one explanation for this," Baishi muttered. "He's retreated into a separate dimension with Baku."
Baishi dismissed the idea that Danzo had somehow moved beyond his sensory range—his current range spanned over 1,000 kilometers. No one could simply escape that. Moreover, the disappearance resembled the conclusion of a summoning technique.
"Heh, interesting. If I'm not mistaken, you'll show up again shortly..."
As Baishi predicted, Danzo's marker reappeared in his sensory field moments later, about ten kilometers away.
Baishi laughed aloud.
"Ah, so that's your plan?"
He quickly formed seals again and created a Wood Clone, carefully marking it with a Flying Thunder God seal.
"You go ahead and check it out."
The Wood Clone nodded silently, locking onto Danzo's marker and vanishing with a flicker.
Baishi remained behind, unconvinced.
Danzo's behavior was illogical—his apparent desperation didn't align with his cunning nature. If escape had been an option, why wait until now? Why use his valuable Sharingan to prolong a confrontation that he had no chance of winning?
Given Danzo's reputation as a master schemer, Baishi suspected this was all a setup to lure him into a trap.
Consider the psychology of revenge: If your mortal enemy slipped away just as you were about to win, wouldn't you chase them down?
Danzo's reappearance so soon after his escape might be a calculated move to tempt Baishi into acting without thinking.
Moreover, the brief interdimensional transition reminded Baishi of how Sasuke had used Manda to escape Deidara's explosion by hiding in another dimension. For Danzo, the parallel was clear—someone had to be assisting his return.
That someone could only be one of Danzo's Root members, making the presence of a trap all the more plausible.
These thoughts flashed through Baishi's mind as he prepared to cast a Mind Body Switch Jutsu to communicate with his Wood Clone.
Before he could act, a flood of fragmented memories poured into his consciousness—a single frame left by his destroyed Wood Clone.
The image showed a group of masked shinobi standing in the distance, with Danzo and a Root member emerging from Baku's mouth.
But what caught Baishi's attention most was the group of four Root ninja encircling his Wood Clone, their hands forming unfamiliar seals.
His clone had been destroyed instantly, too fast to discern what technique had been used.
Baishi's expression darkened.
"Good thing I sent the clone first. That could've ended badly."
Muttering to himself, Baishi raised his hands again, preparing to create additional clones to scout further.
But before he could complete the seals, a sudden force gripped his soul.
An invisible power wrenched his spirit from his body, pulling him irresistibly toward an unknown direction.
The transition was disorienting, but when his vision cleared, Baishi found himself in a crimson-hued space.
Looking around briefly, his gaze settled on the barrier surrounding him.
"What an intricate seal..."
Baishi extended his senses, attempting to locate his Flying Thunder God marks, but there was no response.
Unable to connect with his markers, he concluded that this space had completely severed his external links.
Turning his attention to his captors, Baishi noticed four familiar figures—Root shinobi he'd seen in his Wood Clone's memory.
"Care to explain what technique this is?" Baishi asked calmly.
He expected silence but was mildly surprised when one of the masked figures responded.
