Chapter 72: Mischief In The Burrow
After their exploration of the fungal grove, Caelum and Aurelia made their way back to the familiar comfort of their burrow. The forest had been relentless in its challenges, and the thought of resting in their small, makeshift home felt like a well-deserved reprieve. The sun had dipped low on the horizon, casting long shadows across the forest floor, and the cool evening breeze carried a peaceful silence with it.
As they neared the burrow, Aurelia let out a content sigh. “It feels good to be back.”
Caelum nodded, his segmented body moving steadily toward the entrance of their underground home. “Yeah, we’ve earned this break. Nothing but peace and quiet.”
But the moment they crawled inside, they realized that peace and quiet weren’t exactly what awaited them.
The burrow, which had been carefully dug and reinforced during their early days in the forest, now seemed… chaotic. Scattered bits of leaves and debris littered the ground, and a noticeable crack had formed along one of the walls, as if the structure had weakened in their absence. Worse yet, small pests—tiny beetles and other forest critters—had found their way into their food stores, nibbling away at what little they had left.
Aurelia groaned. “Of course. We leave for a bit, and everything goes wrong.”
Caelum narrowed his eyes at the tiny intruders. “Looks like we’ve got a mess to deal with.”
Without hesitation, they both set to work. Aurelia moved toward the cracked wall, inspecting the damage, while Caelum focused on shooing the pests away from their supplies. He nudged one of the small beetles, sending it scurrying toward the burrow’s exit.
“These little pests have no respect for personal space,” Aurelia muttered telepathically.
Caelum grinned. “At least they’re not dangerous. Just annoying.”
As they worked, Caelum noticed the food supply had dwindled significantly. The pests hadn’t taken everything, but they’d made enough of a mess to make an impact. He sighed, already mentally noting that they’d need to restock soon.
Aurelia, meanwhile, ran her segmented legs along the crack in the wall. “This is going to collapse if we don’t fix it soon.”
Caelum nodded. “We can reinforce it. Let’s gather some stronger materials from outside.”
They left the burrow briefly, collecting sturdy leaves, dirt, and other materials to fortify their home. The task was simple enough, but it required teamwork, something they had grown used to over the course of their journey. When they returned, Aurelia led the effort to patch the cracked wall while Caelum focused on organizing their remaining supplies, making sure the pests wouldn’t return so easily.
As they worked side by side, Caelum couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of satisfaction. The challenges they faced now were small in comparison to what the forest had thrown at them, but in a way, they felt more personal. This was their space, their home, and keeping it in order gave him a sense of pride.
They spent the next hour or so cleaning, reinforcing, and securing the burrow. Aurelia’s sharp eye for detail made sure they didn’t miss any weak spots, and Caelum’s ability to organize helped keep things in order. Once the walls were patched and the food supplies had been properly stored, they stepped back to admire their handiwork.
“Not bad,” Aurelia said, wiping her front leg across her head in a mock gesture of wiping sweat.
Caelum chuckled. “You think we’d get used to this by now.”
Aurelia grinned. “I think we’re getting better at it. You know, maintaining this place.”
As if on cue, a familiar chime echoed in Caelum’s mind.
[System Update]
New Skill Acquired: Burrow Maintenance Lv. 1
Description: You have gained the ability to better maintain your living space. This skill allows you to reinforce burrow walls, organize supplies, and create basic traps to keep pests away.
Caelum blinked at the notification. “Looks like we’ve leveled up in housework,” he said, amusement lacing his voice.
Aurelia paused for a moment, then laughed as she received the same notification. “I’ll take it. Any skill is useful, even if it’s something as mundane as maintaining our burrow.”
They both settled into their now tidy home, the once chaotic mess transformed into a space that felt secure again. The walls were reinforced, their food was safe from pests, and everything seemed in order.
“Feels good,” Caelum said, stretching his limbs as he lay down near the entrance.
Aurelia nodded, curling up next to him. “Yeah, it does. Even small stuff like this makes a difference.”
For a moment, they both sat in comfortable silence, the lighthearted nature of their work providing a welcome break from the dangers they had faced outside. The burrow was small, but it was theirs—a place where they could rest, recover, and prepare for whatever lay ahead.
“I guess we’ll have to keep improving this place as we go,” Caelum said, his eyes growing heavy from exhaustion. “It’s becoming more of a home every day.”
Aurelia smiled faintly, already half-asleep. “Yeah. It’s not much, but it’s ours.”
As the night settled in, Caelum and Aurelia drifted off to sleep, their small home now secure and peaceful once more. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, but for now, they were content with the small victories they had won—victories that made their little corner of the forest feel like home.
