Metamorphosis: The Story of a Butterfly

Chapter 71: The Fungus Grove

The forest, with its endless twists and turns, had started to feel like a maze. After defeating the beetle larva, Caelum and Aurelia continued their journey back home. The dense undergrowth seemed to swallow them whole at times, but the path they followed remained just visible enough to guide their way.

The air had grown cooler, and Caelum noticed a dampness clinging to everything—a distinct difference from the warmer, drier parts of the forest. He could feel the moisture sticking to his segmented body as they moved, the cool sensation contrasting with the heat from their earlier battle. The forest was always changing, and each part of it carried its own kind of threat.

Aurelia, crawling ahead as usual, came to a sudden stop. “Caelum, you’ve got to see this.”

He moved up beside her and was greeted by an unexpected sight: a large grove filled with mushrooms of every shape, size, and color imaginable. Some were small and earthy, their caps dull brown and blending into the forest floor. Others were huge and vibrant, their caps glowing faintly in reds, blues, and yellows.

“This is… interesting,” Aurelia said, her voice light with curiosity. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Caelum nodded, a small smile playing on his face. “Neither have I.”

As they stepped forward into the grove, Caelum’s senses sharpened, but not in the same way they did during battles. The air was thick with the musky scent of damp earth, and the light filtering through the trees made the mushrooms seem almost magical. It was as if they had stumbled upon a hidden corner of the forest that had been left untouched for centuries.

Caelum crouched down beside a cluster of mushrooms, his curiosity piqued. They were large and purple, with thick, spongy caps. Deciding to get a closer look, he activated his Appraisal skill.

[Appraisal Activated]

Name: Gentle Violetcap

Type: Edible Mushroom

Effects: Mildly sweet when cooked. Can be used in basic healing salves.

Status Effects: None

“Looks like these are safe,” Caelum said, glancing at Aurelia. “Edible, too. Might even be useful for healing.”

Aurelia sniffed at the mushrooms. “That’s good to know. They smell kind of sweet.”

They moved on, their steps light as they explored the grove. Caelum’s eyes were drawn to a towering mushroom with a red cap and small white spots, its stem thick and sturdy. It looked strikingly familiar, the kind of mushroom one might see in a storybook.

He used Appraisal again, eager to know more.

[Appraisal Activated]

Name: Spotted Brightcap

Type: Toxic Mushroom

Effects: Causes mild dizziness if consumed. Not lethal, but best avoided.

Status Effects: Temporary Nausea

“Not all of them are friendly,” Caelum noted with a chuckle. “This one causes dizziness. Nothing too dangerous, but we should steer clear.”

Aurelia raised an eyebrow. “I’ll pass on that one, thanks.”

As they ventured deeper into the grove, the variety of mushrooms seemed endless. Some glowed faintly, others released gentle puffs of spores into the air. One cluster of tall, thin mushrooms caught Caelum’s attention. Their caps were a delicate blue, almost translucent, and they swayed gently as if touched by an invisible breeze.

Curious, he activated Appraisal once more.

[Appraisal Activated]

Name: Sapphire Breezecap

Type: Medicinal Mushroom

Effects: Used to treat minor cuts and burns. The spores help accelerate healing.

Status Effects: None

“These look useful,” Caelum said, gesturing to the breezecaps. “They have medicinal properties—could help with healing small wounds.”

Aurelia grinned. “That’s handy. Maybe we should gather a little.”

They carefully picked some parts of the Sapphire Breezecaps through their mandibles, placing them gently in a small makeshift pouch they had crafted from leaves earlier. The atmosphere of the grove felt calm, almost serene, as they continued exploring. Caelum’s earlier tension had faded, replaced by a sense of wonder as they discovered more about the fungi that surrounded them.

Every now and then, Caelum used his Appraisal to check on the different mushrooms they encountered, each one revealing a new bit of information:

[Appraisal Activated]

Name: Golden Glowspore

Type: Decorative Mushroom

Effects: Emits a faint, pleasant glow. Can be used as a natural lantern.

Status Effects: None

[Appraisal Activated]

Name: Bitterroot Fungus

Type: Toxic Mushroom

Effects: Causes bitter taste and mild stomach cramps if ingested.

Status Effects: Minor Discomfort

[Appraisal Activated]

Name: Frostcap

Type: Cooling Mushroom

Effects: Emits a cold mist. Useful for cooling down overheated bodies.

Status Effects: None

“This place is full of surprises,” Aurelia said, her voice light with amusement. “Some of these mushrooms are like nature’s little tools.”

Caelum smiled. “Yeah. It’s not every day you find a mushroom that doubles as a lantern.”

They continued through the grove, marveling at the sheer diversity of the fungi around them. While some mushrooms were clearly best avoided, others seemed like gifts from the forest, offering healing, light, or even just a pleasant smell.

The further they ventured, the more comfortable they became. The grove didn’t feel dangerous, just unusual. It was a part of the forest that seemed to exist in its own peaceful little bubble, and Caelum couldn’t help but appreciate its beauty. It was a reminder that not everything in the Verdant Expanse was out to kill them.

As they reached the edge of the grove, Caelum paused and looked back at the vibrant mushrooms they had encountered. “This was a nice break from the usual dangers,” he said, his voice thoughtful.

Aurelia nodded. “Yeah. We should come back here sometime. Maybe make use of some of the mushrooms.”

Caelum chuckled. “Just make sure to avoid the Spotted Brightcaps.”
