Chapter 39: Chapter 34 Journey into the Abyss of "his" Identity

A voice hummed to the air a song, "Gather around my children for a tell of a man who thought he'd make his name through an impervious plan. He built the tallest tower, and he'd will ascend..."

...

His humming stopped because the lyrics had suddenly dissipated from his mind. The fragment he sang was the only thing he remembered. "At least I remember a fragment". His gaze turned upwards, watching the monochromatic sky.

With his empty eyes, he stared at it for almost an hour. The world contrasted between shades of black and white. He rhetorically asked, "What was my name?..." his muttering slowly faded into the air, the question he made resonated in the emptiness of the void. It was as if the void itself was mourning the loss of his memory.

He felt a sudden urge to look at himself, to see if he could find any clues about his identity. With a growing sense of dread, he asked for an item.

"System, can I get a mirror? Or how does it work? Do you have one included?" Right now, he doesn't know the extent of the system, so he will probably ask for things that others could consider stupid.

The system instantly brought him to the shop, where he bought a simple and cheap mirror.

After he looked at himself, His reflection stared back at him, and then a disquieting realization struck him, the thing in the mirror was a stranger. He touched the glass, expecting it to offer some revelation or trick, but it remained still.

He tried to recall his name, but it was lost to him. He muttered to himself, hoping that the sound of his voice would jog his memory, but it was like inserting the wrong key in the wrong door.

His gaze swapped from the mirror to his hooves. "What even am I? A pegasus?... wait, how do I know how to use my wings?"

A momentary stillness passed before the Player decided to continue questioning his existence.

"I wonder if I'll ever be the same." still plagued by what just happened, he sat down, staring into the vast view the place offered. His wings fluttered intermittently, almost mirroring the turbulent thoughts within.

Barely blinking, he fixated on the emptiness before his eyes. The Player was questioning everything he knew. If something changed, he wouldn't know until a friend pointed it out, but according to his memory, they haven't known each other that long, so the information they give him won't be that much.

The amnesic pegasi stood for hours in serene solitude, hypnotized by the view, only accompanied by the air, the sun and the sky. At first, it was to search for answers, but later, it became relaxing.

After what seemed an eternity, a blue notification finally broke his trance. Many messages appeared. They were from his friends, and by the contents, they seemed a bit concerned...

He had to read them to see their names so he could remember who they were: Daniel, Thalassa, Su Yuan, and James. Their names now felt distant instead of alien, akin to fragments of an incorrect puzzle. He couldn't remember who they were or how he had met them, yet he knew they weren't strangers.

"Curious," he muttered to himself, even if he didn't know them right now, deep inside, it gave him comfort knowing that he wasn't alone.

With that pondering finally ending, he turned to the second most important thing, "But what should I do now? I don't remember my objective... did I even have one?"

For a moment, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing thoughts. He realized that he needed to take things one step at a time.

...

...

...

As he searched within his temple, he found an answer that he didn't totally like because it was really ambiguous and simple, yet it burned brightly like a beacon in the night.

'I want to be stronger. I don't have a fricking idea of why but I want to be stronger and eat tasty food.'

With newfound sparking determination igniting within him, he rose up. Taking six steps backward before plummeting into the vast city.

The resistance of the air began to generate a layer around him as the rush of adrenaline invigorated his senses.

With his speed increasing from descending through the air, he wrote a message. "I'm fine, not completely fixed but functional give me a few days I'm starting to remember more and more, I know that some memories were taken from me but not everything, I'll explain everything later. I don't want to make this text large."

Just as he saw the floor close, he executed a sharp U-turn, now soaring upward. A triumphant yell escaped his lips, dissipating into the storm within him. "DANTE, MY NAME IS DANTE!" he shouted to the heavens.

Dante could feel the sweat and air as the familiar blue interface appeared again, "System, get me out of here."

The system corroborated, "Are you sure you want to leave?"

Without hesitation, Dante pressed the affirmative button, replying to the empty air, "Uh, yes. If not, I wouldn't have asked."
