Chapter 21-2
Duke Adelaira’s Mansion, Hanette’s room.
Hanette finished her makeup and looked at herself in the mirror.
Unlike other noblewomen, she did not overdo her makeup and only finished it to a satisfactory level.
The necklace hanging around her neck still bothered her, but she reluctantly accepted it, thinking it was worth thirty gold coins.
‘I received thirty gold coins and gave away eighty. I took a huge loss, didn’t I?’
Hanette chuckled and left the dressing table.
No matter how many times she thought about it, it was a stupid thing to do, and there was no need for her to have done it.
But instinct overrode reason, and she ended up spending another eighty gold coins to give the item to Sion.
‘Hmph. Because he was scammed… Eighty gold coins flew away just like that.’
Hanette still regretted what had happened, but strangely she felt somewhat at ease.
Of course, she still didn’t know why she did it.
If she hadn’t acted then, she might have ended up resenting herself.
‘What was he going to do with those gloves? I’ll ask him later…’
As Hanette was lost in thought, she heard a knock on the door and slowly turned her head.
Sion, who had finished getting ready to go out, was coming into the room.
“Sister, let’s talk for a moment before you leave.”
“What do you want to talk about?”
“You’ll know when you see.”
Sion quickly locked the door and approached Hanette.
Hanette tense up for a moment, but a smile naturally formed on her lips.
“I’m grateful for what you did back then. If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t have been able to buy it.”
“Of course, you should be grateful. I’m the only one who can help you.”
“Why? Are you going to tell me I don’t have what it takes?”
“No, I mean well… I didn’t think you can’t but.”
“…?”
Sion was briefly taken aback by the unexpected response.
If it had been like usual, she would have provoked him for various reasons.
But now, she was showing a humble attitude, even if only slightly.
“You needed those gloves, right?”
“That’s right. I absolutely needed them.”
“Then it’s settled. I won’t ask you to repay me, so just use them well.”
“But I will repay you. I’ve already got them.”
Sion took out an envelope from his pocket.
Hanette recognized the contents of the envelope with a stiff expression.
“To me, it’s only worth 80 gold coins, but it’s precious money to you. Shouldn’t I return it quickly so you can be at ease?”
Inside the envelope were 10 bills.
They were bills issued by the palace, and each bill could be exchanged for 10 gold coins.
Although there were 20 more gold coins, it didn’t feel like much of a loss.
“… How did you get that?”
“I got it with the best of my abilities, so just take it.”
“You got it from Lord Laird?”
“Can’t you just accept it? Why are you so curious?”
Sion deliberately avoided answering and changed the subject.
He couldn’t tell Her how he got the money.
She could refuse to accept it, just to avoid feeling guilty towards himself and Fred.
“How did you get the money?” Hanette insisted.
“Why do I need to explain it all? Didn’t we agree not interfere with each other.?” Sion replied.
“When did I interfere? Just explain it to me,” Hanette pressed.
“Why do you even care? I didn’t do anything that would cause me to lose money, so just take it and be done with it.”
“I won’t take it until you explain it properly,” Hanette replied firmly, giving Sion a stern look.
Sion, like Hanette, relied on receiving an allowance. It wasn’t an easy feat to acquire 80 gold coins in such a short amount of time, especially in their situation.
“Ugh… I said I’d pay you back the money, so why aren’t you taking it?” Sion replied.
“I can’t take it because it doesn’t feel right. What can I do?” Hanette argued.
“Are you seriously saying that now? Do you know what I have to go through?” Sion.
“If that’s an issue, then explain it to me. Is something bothering you?” Hanette.
“So, you’re not going to take the money?” Sion.
“Why would I take that money? I’ll just consider it as throwing away 80 gold coins,” Hanette replied.
“Sister! 80 gold coins are not a small amount of money!” Sion exclaimed.
“I know that. You must have had your reasons for doing what you did. But I also have my reasons for not taking it. Would I pay attention to money I lost once?” Hanette replied.
For a moment, Hanette considered what Sion had done to earn the money.
He probably went to Lord Laird or his brothers to borrow money.
If Duke Adelaira learned about this, it could cause quite a complicated situation. So maybe that’s why, they gave Sion money to avoid making things worse.
‘I should have just stayed quiet,’ Hanette thought to herself, feeling awkward.
If Robbins or Yenid had found out about the 80 gold coins, they would also find out Hanette was secretly saving money.
Depending on the situation, she might not be able to receive her allowance or even lose what little money she had.
Hanette understood Sion’s intentions, but it seemed like he didn’t understand hers.
He had probably done what he did out of kindness, but he didn’t realize the consequences of his actions.
‘Kids these days don’t understand my heart. I just wanted to help,’ Hanette thought to herself.
