Chapter 45 – Defense Against the Dark Arts class.
[Chapter Size: 1900 Words.]
Third Person POV
Hogwarts.
...
...
Snape woke up the next day with a sigh as he got up. He found an enormous body sleeping next to his room, the Graphorn he had brought from the kitchen of the castle, seeing that it would explode if it continued eating like that.
"Are you awake?" Snape asked, hearing a snore in response. "Tsk." Snape clicked his tongue and decided to go out to do the daily mission.
He went out to the Forbidden Forest, but stayed on its edge while running with the Thestrals following him like dogs.
Returning to the school, everything seemed normal as he saw an owl entering the place and coming straight to him while people looked curiously. He finally received the books he had requested from the public library.
"This is good, I could study some theories of this world," he murmured as he put them away.
"What is that?" Lucinda, who sat down to have her first meal next to Snape, asked curiously.
"Some Muggle knowledge," he said, not caring about the atmosphere that settled at the table, with him saying this in the middle of Slytherin.
"Muggle knowledge?" Lucinda seemed as surprised as her peers.
Snape shrugged and picked up his things before leaving the table. He had the morning free and decided to use this time to go to the restricted section to study both his material and the books he received to improve the theories he was studying from the books written by wizards.
Meanwhile, at the entrance to the infirmary, "Finally!" Potter exclaimed as the itch finally left his body while he looked at his companions.
"What will we do now..." Black asked.
"Let's get ready for the afternoon class, we've missed an entire week..." Lupin commented.
"He's talking about Snape," James intervened. "We'll get our revenge for sure, but we'll wait for the right opportunity," he said.
"I don't think it's a good idea after what happened to us..." Pettigrew said with some fear.
"Don't be afraid of him now, Pettigrew. Soon we'll get him!" Black said.
"You're saying Snape's name again!" a female voice emerged behind them, with Madam Penelope appearing furious at the four. She continued in an unsatisfied tone, "What is the infirmary rule?" She pointed to a board on one of the walls for everyone to see, which led her to create this rule in recent days as she had developed some sort of allergy to this name because all her patients only talked about him.
"Don't talk about Snape..." the four Marauders responded simultaneously like a chorus, reading what was written on the board.
"Very well, now get out of here before you say that name again," she ordered as the four left. Adrian Rosier came right after feeling better, along with Paris Black, who recovered after the damage caused by Snape. Penelope looked at them at that moment.
"I hope you won't be grumbling that name like your Gryffindor colleagues too," she said as the two Slytherins shrugged and left the medical wing heading to their classes.
Snape left the restricted section and went to classes after taking his new animal to the kitchen to eat some decent dish prepared by the elves.
He had a charms class with Hufflepuff that afternoon, followed by a potions class with Ravenclaw, with nothing unusual except Lucinda always staying by his side and striking up any conversation.
He returned to his room after dinner, bringing the animal to avoid spending the night in the kitchen.
"I have to give you a name, tofu," Snape said, looking at it in his own way.
"Ohh," the animal seemed to protest at the nickname, not even able to stand up.
He returned to his armchair in the room and settled in. He hadn't received a response from Professor Slughorn and began creating his next batch of potions with the bodies of the Acromantulas he had killed a week ago, making some powerful potions and antidotes to venoms, which would be easier to sell than his first creation.
After finishing his potions just before dawn, he finally went to sleep.
The next day, he had an extracurricular class, a new subject that the professor had informed him about the previous day, which he could attend. It was about fantastic animals, considering he kept a Graphorn in his room. At least he was curious to learn more about the creatures of this world in practice rather than just reading about them in books.
Snape headed out of the castle and ended up joining a group of students from various classes simultaneously, as everyone had choices in any class of this format. He ended up encountering Lupin there, who looked at him suspiciously and kept an eye on him. But Snape didn't care.
One of the conflicting aspects of Snape and Lily Evans' relationship that fragmented their bond was his constant insistence that she stay away from Lupin, while Lily found Lupin to be a very sensible person and valued his friendship. She always got angry with Snape for his advice that Lupin was dangerous.
Snape was constantly investigating Lupin to figure out what was wrong with him. Although he never spoke about it, with the agreement he had to make with Headmaster Albus later, he knew that Lupin was a werewolf.
Not that he cared about that, as he simply turned his attention to the class that was about to begin. It didn't take long for the professor to start, and Snape was surprised to see that it was the big guy who lived outside the school.
"Hello students..." Hagrid said in a sad tone, still crying over the death of the Graphorn in the Forbidden Forest over the weekend.
"Where is Professor Cassiopeia LeFay?" a Hufflepuff student asked.
"She is on leave today because of her older brother's death... The headmaster asked me to teach the class today." Hagrid said, and when he mentioned someone's death, he simply reached into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief, beginning to cry in front of all the students.
"Hey, is he okay...?" a Hufflepuff girl asked.
"Must be a stomachache..." another Ravenclaw student said, looking at Hagrid in his outburst of tears.
Everyone looked confused while Hagrid began to cry, remembering the poor Horn. "May you rest in peace, poor Horny..." he murmured as he put away the handkerchief and turned back to the students with a still sad face.
His gaze was a bit surprised to see Snape there. After all, he was afraid of that particular student, while Snape maintained a calm expression. None of them knew about the connection with the Graphorn that the other had, so it seemed like they were displaying their usual behaviors.
"Well, let's start the class," Hagrid began, asking everyone to see him take a box from behind his desk with a Diricawl inside it, visible to everyone there. He started to explain based on his personal knowledge as Hagrid's caretaker from a few years back.
"This here is a Diricawl, also known in the Muggle world as a Dodo. Muggles think this creature is extinct, but actually, they have the ability to disappear and reappear elsewhere, like a form of Apparition." Hagrid explained, gesturing to the cage where the Diricawl was kept.
The Diricawl was a bird with fluffy, colorful plumage, and everyone saw its feathers in shades of blue and green shimmering in the sunlight.
"Diricawls are very peaceful and harmless," Hagrid continued. "They are known for their ability to disappear when they feel threatened. This protects them from predators, and that's why Muggles think they went extinct—they simply hide when someone gets too close..."
The class continued until it finally ended, and Snape returned to the school to take the Graphorn to the kitchen and have lunch before the Defense Against the Dark Arts class.
He ate and found the Gryffindor class having a lesson with his house in that room, even though the professor that the headmaster introduced was not present. As he went to a corner, he felt James' eyes piercing him like his worst enemy while his group was at the front.
"Am I so handsome to you, Potter?" Snape asked, drawing the class's attention at that moment while some laughed at James and his group.
"Snape, you'll pay for what you did last week!" James shouted at Snape after hearing such mockery.
"I'm waiting, Potter, but don't worry, I'll make sure you get better treatment than last time..." Snape said in a dangerous tone, while the Slytherin students began to laugh. Despite not liking Snape, they couldn't deny that he was good at putting Potter and the others in their place.
"What did you say!" James was ready to advance.
"Stop, James!" Lily spoke from her desk, asking them not to start a fight before the teacher even appeared.
"He's asking for it!" James protested, and Black was ready to support him while Pettigrew felt scared and Lupin frowned.
"You're more hysterical than a disturbed Ghoul. Stop it, and if you want to fight, I'm waiting, so stop pretending to be brave." Snape provoked him. He wouldn't give Potter and his friends an easy moment as long as they continued to provoke him.
James was about to try to cast something when someone appeared. "I see you are excited to fight, that's good. Now lower your wand, Mr. Potter. And let's pay attention to my class." Professor Longbottom appeared, walking through the room and talking calmly as if a fight wasn't about to start there.
Everyone fell silent as Potter finally gave up the idea and looked at the professor while putting away the wand he had drawn. Snape looked at the professor with curiosity and couldn't help but admire her for her calmness in the situation. This woman should be around 24 years old, but she was quite experienced and famous in the wizarding world.
"As you know, I am the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. I will be teaching you twice a week, once on Wednesday and once on Friday, so we will see each other a lot here." She began.
"That's good, I can defeat dark wizards." Potter murmured to his group, not failing to look at Snape with mockery while Snape's attention was more on the teacher.
"I want you to learn everything about combat. The magical world is very unstable lately, and we need to prepare you for any conflict you may face." She began, looking at everyone. She didn't seem to have a prejudice against Slytherin students, despite this house having many more dark wizards among all the other houses combined who could ally with Voldemort.
"So, after talking with the headmaster and partnering with Professor Filio Flitwick, we are going to open a dueling competition at Hogwarts." She announced as an introduction to her class.
"Dueling Tournament!" Some students seemed excited about this.
"I heard it was banned from Hogwarts more than 10 years ago. We never had it, despite some presentations in recent years." The students seemed excited, while Snape looked at it with boredom. He wasn't very interested in fighting against students, but that might change if he could face the professors...
