Chapter 18: Volume 1, Chapter 18: A-Class Assessment
After returning to his room, he initially planned to run another simulation.
With three opportunities per week, this would be his last chance for the current week. Having some free time, he naturally wanted to complete it.
However, his mind felt sluggish, likely due to excessive simulations. Realizing this, Xia Chen decisively decided against it.
What he needed now was proper rest.
During this break, he truly relaxed, ending up sleeping for seven uninterrupted hours.
Upon waking, everything seemed dim around him, yet his body felt warm and rejuvenated.
"It's been so long since I've felt this relaxed," Xia Chen couldn't help but think.
Ever since arriving in this world, his nerves had constantly been on edge, especially after obtaining the simulator, which exposed him to various unexpected deaths.
This level of complete relaxation was a first for him.
Only when his stomach grumbled with hunger did Xia Chen turn on the light, preparing to make himself a simple meal.
However, the Scarlet Sakura within his System space grew restless again.
The Scarlet Sakura was also feeling hungry.
With no other choice, he had to feed it another Honkai Fragment.
"There's too little Honkai Energy here. Where can I find more of it?"
Xia Chen couldn't help but ponder this concern.
Perhaps he should find an opportunity to ask Alvitr about it.
The night quickly passed.
The next day, Xia Chen arrived at the training ground according to the Immortal Blades' schedule.
As expected, many Valkyries were already engaged in their training.
He noticed two new additions to the group—one was Chen Tianwen, and the other was Ana.
"Team member Xia Chen."
Rita approached him unexpectedly and spoke, "You already know these two, so there's no need for introductions. From now on, Chen Tianwen will temporarily train with the Immortal Blades."
It seemed that Chen Tianwen was newly assigned to the Immortal Blades; previously, she had been undergoing physical assessments at Headquarters.
Upon seeing Xia Chen, her eyes clearly showed surprise.
Xia Chen smiled and then asked Rita, "Vice-Captain, is there a mission?"
"A-level Valkyrie assessment task."
Rita didn't withhold the information and explained, "Based on your previous performance, Headquarters believes you already possess A-level Valkyrie capabilities. Miss Ana will serve as your safety observer for this assessment, responsible for recording your results. The specific details of the evaluation will be provided by Ana."
Xia Chen instinctively looked towards Ana.
Her complexion appeared much improved compared to yesterday.
After a moment, she stated, "I have faith in Xia Chen's abilities."
Clearly, assigning Ana to observe Xia Chen's assessment also served as an opportunity for her to step out and alleviate the psychological impact from the Manila incident.
Xia Chen thought to himself, "Just when I was worried about obtaining Honkai Energy, it seems my wish has been granted."
Regardless of the format, any Valkyrie assessment inevitably involves dealing with Honkai, given their responsibilities.
This chance allowed Xia Chen to familiarize himself with the requirements for an A-level Valkyrie assessment.
Similar to Saint Freya Academy, the evaluation consisted of two parts: theoretical knowledge and practical application.
The theoretical examination covers essential subjects such as history, physics, mathematics, along with geography, folklore, tactical planning, armor usage, and weaponry. A-level Valkyries often serve as reserve captains for Valkyrie Squads, requiring not only to handle Honkai incidents but also lead their team members effectively, hence the high demand for theoretical knowledge.
This explains why Kiana frequently complains about needing theory exams despite her combat prowess.
However, if the number of Honkai incidents worldwide increases rapidly, Schicksal Headquarters may relax squad leadership requirements. In such cases, B-ranked Valkyries who meet the strength criteria but lack sufficient theoretical knowledge can be appointed as squad captains.
An example is Kiana, later serving as Captain of Valkyrie Squad V at the Far East Branch, despite being a B-ranked Valkyrie.
As for the practical exam, it's relatively straightforward.
Initially, the practical test for A-ranked Valkyries was simple: defeat both the Emperor and Queen of Honkai within the Memory Battlefield. However, the Tactical Laboratory discovered that Valkyries' mindset differed significantly between simulated battles in the Memory Battlefield and actual combat situations. Consequently, they introduced various elements to make the Memory Battlefield more challenging.
These additions included bleeding conditions, thunderstorm weather effects, increased evasion requirements, and more.
Additionally, Templar Honkai Beasts and even groups of Honkai Beasts were introduced as part of the assessment.
Of course, these challenges occurred within the Memory Battlefield.
As global Honkai incidents increased, handling such events effectively also became a component of the evaluation. Xia Chen's combat abilities met the requirements, but Headquarters wanted to assess his capability in managing Honkai situations independently, including evacuating personnel and controlling information leaks.
In essence, the A-rank Valkyrie assessment is incredibly complex, deterring countless individuals from attempting it.
Within the Immortal Blades, there were several Valkyries whose skills clearly qualified them, yet they faltered at the final step. However, Xia Chen strongly suspected that some may have intentionally made errors.
After all, becoming an A-rank Valkyrie often meant leaving the Immortal Blades, eliminating their chance to remain close to their captain.
Xia Chen initially shared this sentiment; without the System, he would likely have been content being one of Durandal's sidekicks.
The captain's training was rigorous, but she certainly delivered exceptional results.
But now...
If acquiring Honkai Energy is crucial, only by leaving the Immortal Blades could he gain greater freedom to seek out and address Honkai incidents.
A squad captain enjoys considerable freedom, although the Far East Branch isn't necessarily representative of this.
Generally, within their assigned defense zone, squad captains have autonomy to handle Honkai incidents as they see fit.
"I understand. So when does the assessment begin?" Xia Chen looked expectantly at Ana.
Ana nodded, "Let's start with the theoretical portion."
She acknowledged Rita, "Thank you for your assistance, Vice-Captain Rita."
"No need for such courtesy, Miss Ana."
Rita departed.
Xia Chen followed Ana away from the Immortal Blades' base to a secluded area.
The Headquarters' theoretical exam wasn't merely a simple paper test, though those were included but held less weight. The most crucial part involved virtual reality scenarios, presenting maps or enemy simulations, where one must identify key information and provide correct responses.
Honestly, it wasn't particularly challenging.
To draw an analogy, it was akin to reading a Detective Conan comic and identifying the culprit among characters introduced on the first page—a similar level of difficulty.
After completing the assessment, Ana couldn't help but congratulate him, "Congratulations! You've passed the theoretical examination. Although there were some gaps in physics and history sections, overall, your performance was outstanding."
"Truthfully, my theory score wasn't even as high as yours," Ana admitted with a smile, dismissing it casually.
Some questions were similar to those encountered during his gaming sessions.
"Well then, next up is the practical examination."
Ana led him to the Memory Battlefield.
