Chapter 143: Chapter 143: Luna
In the past, young wizards would avoid Hagrid's vegetable patch, but now it has become one of the most popular spots on campus, commonly referred to as the "Game Field" by the students.
Hagrid's daily joy now came from acting as the referee for the Battle Royale Game. Sitting on his high stool, he got to witness scenes that left him in fits of laughter almost every round.
The school professors also frequented the field, partly to enjoy the excitement and partly to ensure students didn't sustain serious injuries.
When Wade wasn't around, the professors would take over and cast Engorgement Charms and Confundus Charms to send giant bugs "chasing" after the students.
However, for students who couldn't handle the insects, a new game mode quickly developed—
Students would randomly draw lots to split into black and white teams, then engage in a battle. This way, groups of just two or three or even thirty to forty could join in and enjoy the game.
Dumbledore even added a little magic of his own to the Game Field: after grouping, each student's robes would automatically change to either white or black.
He even wanted to join in himself but was unanimously, albeit "politely," turned down by the students.
Although the professors explicitly stated that harmful curses were prohibited in the field, there were always some students who sneaked a forbidden spell or two and promptly found themselves penalized with points deducted and detention.
But unlike typical punishments like copying lines or handling potion ingredients, violations in the Game Field were met with the most dreaded tasks.
For instance, cleaning the bathrooms.
Or mixing fertilizer without a wand.
And the worst punishment—being banned from the Game Field, anywhere from three days up to an entire term.
Some students didn't mind doing the dirty, grueling tasks, but being barred from the school's most popular activity was unthinkable.
After a few rule-breakers received these strict punishments, everyone finally understood where to draw the line.
Even so, almost every day, a few students ended up in the hospital wing, most often for head injuries or broken bones from falling off pumpkins.
For wizards, as long as the injury didn't involve Dark Magic, most fractures could be mended in a matter of minutes, no more troublesome than a common cold.
However, Madam Pomfrey found herself busier than ever, with more students arriving in a single day than previously seen in a whole week. She submitted requests to close the Game Field three times daily to the headmaster.
Dumbledore, smiling cheerfully, declined her every time.
Wade, who had started the game, hadn't dared show up in front of Madam Pomfrey for quite some time.
When he finally returned to the Game Field, he found that it had changed dramatically.
First, only about half of the giant pumpkins remained in the field. They had been hollowed out and could now fit two or three people, looking like tiny houses. The other half had been picked and were stacked behind Hagrid's hut.
"These are for Halloween," Hagrid explained to Wade. "If the kids destroy them too much, we won't be able to carve them into the proper shapes."
As he spoke, he took a huge knife and cut out the damaged parts of a pumpkin. He then scooped out the insides, leaving the hollow pumpkins like giant lanterns.
To fill the empty spaces left by the removed pumpkins, Professor McGonagall had moved statues and suits of armor from the castle into the Game Field.
These would occasionally wander around and sometimes stick out a foot to trip passing students.
Michael, who had tripped and fallen face-first because of one, spat out a mouthful of dirt, then pondered for a long moment before asking:
"Wade, do you think they're playing pranks on us by themselves, or is Professor McGonagall making them do it?"
"Impossible!" Hermione immediately defended her head of house. "Professor McGonagall would never do that."
"Well, you never know," Wade said. "Think about it—what's Professor McGonagall's Animagus form?"
Harry answered, "A cat?"
Ryan thought for a moment and then said seriously, "We have a cat at home, and it loves to push things off tables."
The group exchanged looks and pictured McGonagall's stern face. And then they immediately fell silent and each of them decided to keep this thought to themselves.
The next day, during Transfiguration class, Professor McGonagall noticed Harry grinning foolishly and asked sternly, "Mr. Potter, do you have any questions about today's lesson?"
Harry scrambled to his feet, stammering, "A c—uh, no, Professor!"
Professor McGonagall stared at him intently, like a large feline eyeing its prey.
"I… actually wanted to ask…" Harry's mind raced as he stammered, "Animagi… how do you train in that magic?"
"It's far too early for you to be thinking about that, Mr. Potter," Professor McGonagall replied, not entirely pleased.
Hermione bravely raised her hand.
"But we all want to know, Professor… um, this magic must be really difficult, right? I heard only seven people in the 20th century managed to do it, and you were one of them…"
The students looked at Professor McGonagall with curiosity and admiration.
The witch cleared her throat. "Alright, since you're all so interested, I'll give you a brief explanation…"
Harry breathed a sigh of relief. He sat down at the professor's gesture and gave Hermione a grateful glance.
"An Animagus is a wizard who can transform into an animal. However, you can't just choose any animal, nor can you transform into magical creatures."
Professor McGonagall explained, "The animal you transform into is usually connected to the wizard's personality and body weight. If the transformation isn't practiced carefully, one might end up unable to return to human form, which makes it a very dangerous branch of transfiguration…"
—So it really is connected to personality!
Several students all thought this in unison, feeling as if they were seeing their head of house in a new light.
…
Following Professor McGonagall's addition to the Game Field, Professor Sprout contributed a few things as well.
These included pea pods that could shoot beans, waist-high baby Whomping Willows, juvenile Devil's Snare, and beautiful but mildly hallucinogenic mushrooms that looked innocent yet posed mild challenges.
The magical plants' harm was limited to a safe degree, but they always managed to give the students a bit of a hard time.
Additionally, under the headmaster's suggestion, the house-elves brought in old tables, chairs, storage shelves, broken stone statues, and more, arranging the Game Field to resemble a maze.
As a result, the field's area expanded to more than twice its original size.
Soon afterward, a notice appeared on the bulletin board in the entrance hall—
"A Dueling Club?" Michael asked with interest. "Will Professor Flitwick be leading it? He was a dueling champion in his younger days!"
If I could learn a few tricks from Professor Flitwick, perhaps I will have a shot at defeating Wade?
"I hope so," Wade replied. "But I haven't heard the professor mention anything about it."
He had just been to Professor Flitwick's office yesterday with some questions; if the professor had been planning this, he would have likely dropped a hint… wouldn't he?
In the original storyline, this club was started by Lockhart.
Wade wondered if Professor Flitwick, having seen the Game Field, might be inspired to teach the students some of his own dueling expertise.
…
However, as it turned out, he wasn't.
After dinner, the familiar, beaming Gilderoy Lockhart appeared in the Great Hall.
And Professor Snape stood nearby, enveloped in shadows.
The long tables in the hall had disappeared, replaced by a stage about half a person high.
Lockhart opened his arms on the stage and said loudly, "Welcome, children! I'm delighted to see almost all the students here; your enthusiasm for learning truly moves me…"
Michael murmured in disappointment, "If he's so moved, can we have Professor Flitwick back?"
After a month, almost everyone, except for a few girls wearing fan-girl filters, could clearly see what kind of professor he was.
Rather than a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, he was more like a drama teacher.
Lockhart was keen on having students perform scenes from his books during every class, spending at least thirty minutes boasting about his bravery and greatness.
However, when it came to professional knowledge, he would stammer and change the subject.
Michael was also called up to perform as a werewolf and a yeti, which he considered a lifelong shame.
"I suddenly remember that Lockhart seems to have never made you perform one of his scripts?" Michael asked Wade. "How did you manage that?"
"Ignore Spell," Wade whispered. "If you want to learn it, I can teach you next time."
"Don't wait until next time; let's go to the Umbrella Room now. We won't learn anything useful from Lockhart anyway."
"Hold on a second." Wade tilted his chin and gestured toward Snape. "Professor Snape is here too… he wouldn't just show up for no reason."
As he spoke, Lockhart on stage also pointed at the black-robed wizard.
"Professor Snape is our assistant. He has graciously agreed to help me with a little demonstration before class… Don't worry, I'll return your potions professor to you in one piece!"
He said with a triumphant grin while Snape glared at his back.
The students instantly grew excited.
"Wow—"
Michael, who had intended to leave, quickly turned back, reveling in Lockhart's predicament.
"I'm starting to admire this professor… he really has guts, doesn't he?"
Neville covered his mouth in horror. "How dare he?"
"He probably thinks… Professor Snape is just a weak technician, right?"
Wade speculated on Lockhart's thoughts.
Snape always wore loose robes and moved like a bat with its wings spread, but he was actually quite thin.
Ignoring his terrifying expression, he did give off a frail vibe.
But magical ability doesn't depend on muscle.
The two professors demonstrated the process of dueling on stage: they faced each other, bowed (Snape only nodded slightly), and raised their wands.
Lockhart continued to prattle on, "Pay attention to my etiquette, children… You were too rude in the Battle Royal game. A true wizard duel is very elegant and swift."
"We will count to three, and then in just an instant, your potions professor will lose his wand…"
"One… two… three…"
With a loud "bang," Lockhart flew off the stage, crashed into the wall, and then slid to the ground and his wand flew out of his hand.
The Slytherin students cheered, and Wade and Michael also clapped along.
"Let's go; there's nothing else worth seeing now."
As Lockhart groggily got back up, Wade glanced over at Harry not far away and said to Michael.
Currently, there hadn't been any incidents of "Slytherin heirs attacking students" at school, and even if Harry accidentally revealed his Parseltongue ability, he wouldn't be seen as the school's public enemy.
Of course, after all his training, Harry would never just think of using Parseltongue to fend off a snake.
The two squeezed through the crowded hall and encountered Theo and Ryan along the way, who joined them.
"Don't listen to Lockhart's nonsense," Wade told his friends. "In a real fight, no one is going to bow at you like that. If you can sneak attack, do it; if not, dodge and protect yourself."
"Only when the strength disparity is extreme is there any room for elegance and style."
Theo unexpectedly recalled the scene when Wade defeated the werewolf and the dark wizard.
Before those two fell, Wade hadn't revealed his intentions at all.
It was the same during the Battle Royal game.
From the very beginning, Wade never stood there like them, foolishly facing off and throwing spells at each other.
And… he always won.
Theo pondered this thoughtfully.
…
The Umbrella Room activities still ended just before curfew.
Michael and the others returned to their common room, while Wade headed to the Room of Requirement.
He first entered the Room of Hidden Things and found that it was indeed much emptier; the tables and cabinets in the Game Field likely came from here.
Then he switched to the potion-brewing room, where several cauldrons bubbled away with potions, each emitting small bubbles.
The potions they learned in class could generally be completed within a single lesson, some even taking just ten minutes.
However, advanced potions often require a long time to brew.
For example, a truth serum (Veritaserum) takes about a month; a complex potion also takes about a month; and a Felix Felicis (Liquid Luck) potion requires six months.
Fortunately, except for the necessary stages, the cauldrons don't need constant supervision, as magic keeps the flames burning steadily and continuously.
After checking on his potions, Wade noticed that it was already quite late. He used a Summoning Charm to call his broom, flew through the corridor's window, and landed directly on the rooftop of the Ravenclaw Tower.
The eagle-shaped door knocker gently asked, "What is too much for one; enough for two; nothing for three?"
"A secret."
Wade replied.
When the common room door opened and he stepped inside, he was surprised to find that there was still someone in the common room.
A girl was curled up on the sofa in front of the fireplace, sound asleep in her pajamas.
She had originally been covered with a blanket, but it had slipped off halfway, exposing her calves and bare feet.
Wade waved his wand, and the blanket floated back up to cover the girl.
The process was light and silent, but the girl was startled awake.
A golden-brown head stirred beneath the covers, and then she looked up at him in confusion.
The girl had pale skin, very light eyebrows, and rare silver eyes that bulged out, as if she was quite surprised.
Wade's footsteps, which were meant to take him back to his room, came to a halt.
