Chapter 142
The burnt tuft of fur felt oddly sweet. Simply being roasted resulted in this kind of flavor? After the sweet tuft completely melted away, my mouth was filled with tender meat.
“Is it safe to eat this…?”
I nodded with my cheeks stuffed. Since the Nightmare had eaten it, there couldn’t be any poison. Its sense of danger was particularly sensitive when it came to food.
After finishing our meal, we started walking down the road again. Everything we encountered in the vast prairie felt unfamiliar. A mushroom as big as a tree— I wanted to get closer out of curiosity, but the swirling spores carried by the wind filled the area, preventing me from approaching recklessly.
“Is there actually anyone living here…?”
“Who knows.”
I looked around in response to Shu’s question, but there was nothing in the wide-open view.
All that existed was the expansive sky and the long-stretched green prairie. Occasionally, when gigantic monsters revealed themselves, a refreshing breeze would blow through.
As the sun began to set in the sky, we arrived in front of a gigantic Large Rock Mountain. Camping atop the mountain would be more comfortable than in the completely open prairie. I started climbing the Large Rock Mountain with the kids.
Just as we had climbed about halfway up the mountain, a sudden tremor shook the entire Large Rock Mountain.
Kugugung-!
“E, earthquake…!”
“Hold on tight, everyone!”
At that moment, we pressed ourselves flat against the ground to avoid falling from the massive tremor. A part of the shaking mountain shot upwards into the sky and started to move on its own. Just like a living creature.
Kuwung-!
The once tightly curled-up form of the Large Rock Mountain unfolded wide. Long legs stretched toward the darkness as they landed on the ground. When the enormous head rose high into the sky, I was able to fully recognize the form of the massive Large Rock Mountain.
Kuwung-!
It wasn’t just some Large Rock Mountain. It was merely a gigantic monster made entirely of rock. The giant rock monster resembling a turtle began to crawl forward, slowly yet swiftly.
Kuwung-!
“Whoa…”
“I, is this okay…?”
“Aren’t we supposed to get down?”
Ignoring Su and Shu’s questions, I dashed onto the turtle’s back. Its body resembled a rock but was genuine rock. I shoved my hands and feet into the cracks everywhere and climbed onto the turtle’s neck.
How could a creature’s body be made of rock?
Kuwung-!
“E, Emily! That’s dangerous!”
“I’m fine!”
It wasn’t dangerous. It didn’t even know we were riding on its back. I hung on to the turtle’s neck, looking in the same direction as it did.
Where on earth was this giant going? The thought of needing to return to my original world faded away. I wanted to take in this world with my own two eyes a little longer.
After hanging there for quite a while, I lightly jumped down onto the back where Su and Shu were waiting.
“W, what did you see?”
“Nothing. Nothing at all.”
I shook my head at Shu’s question. Just to be sure, I glanced in the direction the turtle was heading, but all that awaited at the end was still the green prairie and the endlessly stretched black sky.
Kuwung-!
With each step it took, a tremendous tremor resonated through the ground. I sunk to the ground, feeling that tremor. At that moment, Su, keeping an eye on me, asked.
“Where are we going to sleep…?”
“We’ll sleep here.”
“Here…?”
“Yep.”
I decided to lay down on the broad rock. It was a bit hard and shaky, but it wasn’t so bad that I couldn’t sleep with a blanket laid out on the ground.
With the endlessly spread sky as my roof and the giant rock turtle’s body as my bed, I would spend tonight as I always had.
Nodding while gazing at the beautiful starlight flowing in the sky, Su sighed and came to lie down beside me.
“Isn’t this dangerous?”
“It’s probably safer than sleeping in the prairie.”
“That may be true, but…”
“Should we light a fire?”
I shook my head at Shu’s question. If we started a fire on its back, the turtle might get mad.
Lying down alongside my hometown friends, I looked up at the sky. Moving my gaze along the softly flowing starlight, I heard Shu’s voice.
“If we tell others about what happened today, no one would believe us, right?”
I let out a light laugh at his mumbling and replied.
“You didn’t believe my story either.”
“Oh…”
Only then did Shu seem to recall my adventure, his mouth opening in surprise. At that moment, the Nightmare squeezed in between Shu and me, settling its massive body down.
“T, this thing…!”
Fwomp-
The startled Shu was pushed aside while the Nightmare stared at him as if to say, “Any objections?” After it let out a rough snort, Shu’s tail drooped.
Kuwung-!
The giant footsteps of the turtle came like a lullaby. As the vibrations rocked my body, they began to feel like a soothing touch when I could hear Su whispering beside me.
“Emily has been on such special adventures normally, hasn’t she?”
I slowly recalled old memories in response to Su’s question. Typically, I crossed mountains and rivers, wandering the fields. I met countless people like a breeze passing by and, just as many, parted ways.
What happened today was just a continuation of those adventures. For me, every moment was a precious uniqueness.
“My adventures are special every moment.”
“Every moment…?”
“I think so.”
“Hm…”
“Would you say your adventures were ordinary before meeting me?”
Su and Shu. The adventure of two young twins who had left their hometown together. There was no way it wasn’t special. Even if it seemed ordinary to others, it must have been a special memory imprinted in their hearts.
As long as those two kids didn’t give up their expectations for adventure, every moment would surely become a special adventure. At least, that’s what I believed.
“Hm…”
Upon hearing my words, Su, lost in deep thought, began breathing evenly with his eyes closed. From beyond the Nightmare, I could hear Shu snoring, indicating that he too had fallen into a deep sleep.
I turned my body and pulled the Nightmare’s neck into an embrace as I fell asleep.
*
The next morning. I could finally open my eyes as the sun began to rise. Su and Shu were curled up tightly against the cold morning air.
Kuwung-!
The heavy footsteps echoed in my ears. The giant rock turtle continued to walk, seemingly not having stopped throughout the night.
As I got up and glanced around, I realized that we had arrived in a different place from yesterday. The vast prairie was nowhere to be seen. It was a forest. A forest filled with tall trees.
The turtle was walking through the woods.
Kuwung-!
The rock turtle’s legs ruthlessly trampled the forest. As I examined the woods, I noticed a faint sound and some smoky haze coming from very far away.
Kaaang-!
That sound felt familiar. The moment it brought back memories, a hot, metallic scent brushed against my nostrils.
“Su! Shu! Wake up fast!”
Su and Shu started to get up groggily. As I frantically began to pack up my things, realizing the situation, the two kids also started to gather their belongings.
“Did you find anything?”
“Maybe.”
After collecting all our gear, I signaled to the Nightmare. It shrank down to the size of a small puppy and jumped toward me.
Fwoosh-!
“Let’s go!”
After packing the Nightmare into my bag, I shouted as I ran forward. Su and Shu quickly followed behind me.
As I jumped from the ground, the rough wind lifted my body up as if riding on the wild breeze.
The unique smell of the forest wafted through the air, tousling my hair. The moment my elevated body began to fall downwards, I drew the Ice Dragon Sword and Fire Dragon Sword from my waist and threw them.
The two swords spinning through the air rapidly approached beneath my feet. The moment I lightly stepped onto one, I could see Su and Shu standing atop the Ice Dragon Sword.
It looked a little cramped having two people standing on the narrow sword, but for now, it was the best option.
Who would have thought we would be riding swords through the sky? I smiled, recalling hazy memories from my past life.
The refreshing wind made my cape flutter. With a pleasant breeze on my back, I felt like a deity appearing in one of those stories.
The two swords flew rapidly across the forest. Occasionally, gigantic birds soaring from within the woods interrupted our path, but it wasn’t a problem.
Caaang-!
As we got closer to our destination, the sound of metal striking grew louder. When the swords came to a halt, I glanced down wide-eyed.
There was a village below. A village where humans, elves, and dwarves seemed to be living together.
The forge, emitting smoky haze and hot heat, burst with the sound of clanging metal.
Kaaang-!
“Elves…? And dwarves too?”
“This isn’t a dream, right?”
I began lowering the altitude of the swords, descending slowly so as not to startle the villagers below.
Beyond the high wooden fence, the gazes of the peacefully living villagers turned skyward as I waved with the brightest smile I could muster.
I knew very well how my appearance might seem to others. When I smiled at someone I was meeting for the first time, they would lower their guard and act in a way to win my favor. That wouldn’t be any different in this world beneath the sky.
Those who were looking up with wary eyes waved back at my greeting. The looks on the men, in particular, seemed quite pleasant.
I further lowered the swords and landed inside the village.
“Hello?”
“នេះគឺមិនអាចយល់បាន។?”
An incomprehensible language slipped out at my greeting. Of course, I wasn’t flustered as I had expected such a situation. It was natural for different worlds to have different languages. Just as I awkwardly smiled and observed the expressions of the people, it happened.
“Th, that language… Are you perhaps from the Celestial Realm?”
It was a familiar tongue. I tilted my head and turned my gaze toward the voice. There stood an old man leaning on a cane. From the looks of his rounded ears and not particularly short limbs, he appeared to be a regular human.
“Celestial Realm…?”
“As expected… you’ve come from there…!”
Nodding, the old man began to chatter to the people around him. Upon hearing his words, the villagers nodded and dispersed, returning to their own tasks.
While keeping an eye on this, I retrieved the Ice Dragon Sword and Fire Dragon Sword before speaking up.
“Wait, you’re saying Celestial Realm means a person came down from the sky? Are you from the Celestial Realm too, grandfather?”
“I’m not. But my friend came down from there once. How did you end up here? Did your airship crash like my friend?”
“No, we…”
Just as I was about to explain why we had arrived here, the old man turned and began to walk away.
“First, follow me. Let me treat you to some tea.”
I looked back. Su and Shu were gazing at me as if waiting for my choice.
I sighed softly. The only one I could communicate with in this unfamiliar place was him. In the end, I had no choice but to follow the old man.
The place where I arrived, following the old man, was a considerably large cabin.
