Another World Reincarnation Chronicle

Chapter 141

After confirming the enormous deer was moving away, I lowered the altitude of the Fire Dragon Sword and carefully descended onto the prairie. The moment I felt the soft texture of the grass beneath my feet, the mixed scent of dirt and grass brushed against my nose.

It was an air filled not with the salty smell of the sea from a moment ago, but with the refreshing aroma unique to the green prairie.

Su and Shu, placing their hands on their swords, began to scan the surroundings. Seemed like a habit ingrained in them from their adventurer days.

“Hmmm… what now?”

I looked up at the sky. It appeared peaceful, but from within the clouds came the faint cries of monsters, endlessly echoing.

This was definitely not a safe place. The fact that we hadn’t encountered any monsters while descending was merely good fortune.

Could we fly back to our original world on the Fire Dragon Sword?

That was a question thrown at myself, but the answer came back with skepticism. If I could use magic, it might have been possible, but for now, I concluded it was impossible.

If it were just me, I might have found a way, but…

I shook my head, glancing at Su and Shu who were looking around anxiously. To safely return with the two kids, I needed to find another way.

I retrieved the Fire Dragon Sword and lightly tapped my bag.

Tap, tap—

With a gentle gesture, the bag rustled, and a small horse head suddenly popped out. It was the Nightmare, shrunken by the artifact’s power.

Pheehee—

“What, what is that…?”

“A baby Nightmare?”

Su and Shu looked surprised at the small, puppy-like Nightmare. It was only natural since I had never shown them its transformed state. I shook my head and set the Nightmare down onto the prairie.

In that moment, the Nightmare’s body instantly grew back to its original form. As I climbed onto the Nightmare, Su looked at me, puzzled.

“Emily?”

“Let’s scout the area first. We need to find a way back.”

“Oh, okay.”

If the findings from the ruins were true and that the ruins came from beneath, there should be human civilization here as well.

These were people who even ran specialized magic schools. Perhaps they could solve the issue of not being able to use magic.

Eventually, the three of us started walking through the vast prairie without any destination in mind. Occasionally, we spotted huge trees laden with fruits I had never seen before.

“Can we eat that?”

“It’s better not to touch it.”

I shook my head at Shu’s question. If the fruits were edible, the monsters would have eaten them first. The fact that such delicious-looking fruits were left untouched meant there must be a good reason.

In the end, we passed right by the massive fruit tree.

The wide prairie resembled the sea. The refreshing breeze swept through and made the grass wave like green tides.

“This is…”

After walking for quite a long time, we discovered signs of civilization. It must have looked like a charming house built of white bricks when it was first constructed.

But now, only traces remained. The structures, worn down by time, had collapsed, and the bricks that were once white were now layered with black dust. Moreover, green moss covered them, giving off a damp smell.

Regardless, it was the first trace of people we had found. I dismounted from the Nightmare and headed inside the building.

“There’s something that looks like a chair… though it’s rotten.”

“Is this a ladle…?”

Su and Shu busied themselves rummaging through various objects, uncovering odds and ends. I pulled out a book that seemed somewhat intact from between a half-collapsed bookshelf. Of course, it only appeared intact. As I opened the book, it crumbled into bits.

“Emily!”

Looks like the kids had finished their search. Su and Shu each brought me objects they thought were useful.

“A broken plate shard and a rusty fork and knife?”

“This is about all that looked usable.”

“Everything else fell apart the moment we touched it.”

In the end, there was nothing salvageable from the partially collapsed building. We had merely confirmed that the people here had once been civilized enough to produce books.

We set off on our journey again, aimlessly. Everything in this foreign land felt new.

Every experience here was an adventure. I felt the wind brushing against my fingertips and looked towards the distance. Something long and gigantic surfaced and disappeared among the pure white clouds.

I shifted my gaze to the opposite side. There, the bones of a gigantic monster lay stretched out, greeting the wind. The breeze flowing through the bones created a strange resonance, sounding eerily like a monster’s cry.

While it was impossible to picture the monster’s original form without all its bones, the remaining ribs were enough to suggest it could have created a massive cave, hinting at its size.

“Are all the monsters here gigantic…?”

The moment Shu’s muttering ended, small tufts of fur were blown in on the wind. The tufts that brushed over our heads seemed to deny Shu’s words.

“Not all monsters seem to be big.”

“Hmmm…”

I pulled out the bow I had hung on the Nightmare’s back, watching the tufts fly on the wind.

“Emily…? What are you doing?”

“Food.”

I answered Su’s question briefly while I pulled out the arrows I had reserved and drew back the bowstring. The moment my strong physique pulled the string to its limit, the arrow was released.

Phew—

The swiftly flying arrow split the air. Instead of heading towards the tufts, the arrow soared into the sky, tracing a bizarre trajectory as it aimed for the tuft I had targeted.

Thwack—

[Beep!]

With a satisfying impact sound, a short scream echoed. One of the flying tufts fell to the ground, pierced by the arrow.

Did that mean it was okay since it wasn’t pure mana but the essence of spirits?

I looked down at the small bow while gripping the Nightmare’s bridle.

The tuft that fell to the ground seemed to have lost its life with a single shot. I leaped down from the Nightmare and poked its body, feeling its softness.

With its white tufty appearance and the way it moved in the wind, it resembled more of a seed from a plant than a monster.

“Shall we try eating this?”

“Yeah.”

Just as I was about to pick up the tuft from the ground in response to Su’s question, the wind suddenly shifted direction.

“U-um, Emily…?”

“Yeah?”

I turned my head to follow Shu’s gaze. At that moment, I spotted numerous tufts soaring into the sky, blotting out the heavens.

[Beep!]

[Beep!]

[Beep!]

“Those guys seem angry…”

I didn’t need to be told. I threw the tuft’s corpse I had been holding to the floor and quickly drew the Fire Dragon Sword.

They didn’t look particularly strong, but if there were hundreds of them, that was a different story. If I could use magic, I would have wiped them out in one go…

With a frown, I said to Su and Shu:

“Fight in the safest way possible.”

“Okay.”

At that moment, a strong wind picked up. The white tufts rushed towards us on the wind.

[Beep!]

I swung the Fire Dragon Sword at the foremost white tuft charging ahead. Just as the crimson blade lit up with flames, the tuft was sliced cleanly in half.

Whoosh—

[Beep!]

Crimson flames erupted from the blade of the Fire Dragon Sword. As the fierce red flames whisked through the air, dozens of tufts were engulfed in flames and plummeted.

However, the tufts still did not cease their charge. Eventually, we were pushed high into the sky by the relentless white tufts.

“Th-these little guys…!”

The only attacks the tufts performed were headbutts and bites. That made it even more bewildering. Was there no fear of death in them?

Their reckless rush towards an opponent they couldn’t defeat felt like moths diving into flames.

I shook off the tufts clinging to me and swung the Fire Dragon Sword with all my might. As the moonlight dimly flashed down from above, the red flames poured down on top.

Fwoosh—

With decisive precision.

The hundreds of tufts clinging to me while flying into the sky were split in an instant. As the hot flames consumed their bodies, I managed to land back on the ground.

“Haa…”

I released a sigh of relief while scanning the surroundings. Aside from a few tufts that were wobbling in the wind, I had dealt with most of them. Su and Shu were bleeding a bit, but they looked alright. The Nightmare seemed fine as well.

As I exhaled a breath of relief, I suddenly became aware of a massive shadow overhead. I looked up to see a gigantic cat peering from between the clouds.

Our eyes met. The moment I thought that, the enormous cat gracefully landed on the ground, moving its six legs smoothly.

Thud—

I pointed my sword at the cat and quickly stepped back. Su, Shu, and the Nightmare cautiously approached me, wary of the suddenly appeared gigantic cat.

It was a colossal monster that flew freely in the sky, far more powerful than the pure white tufts.

Just as we prepared for battle, the cat abruptly turned its head away, as if we weren’t worth its attention.

Its focus rested solely on the corpse of the tuft lying on the ground. It opened its large mouth wide and began lapping up the tuft engulfed in flames.

I did not let my guard down as I watched this scene. I could not predict when it might suddenly turn and attack us. Time passed uneventfully. When about half of the hundreds of tuft corpses were devoured, the cat licked its paw a few times and then flew back into the sky.

It seemed to create an invisible foothold in mid-air, stepping lightly with its six legs. The moment the giant cat vanished among the clouds, a sigh escaped my lips.

“Haa…”

Su and Shu also looked drained, gazing up at the sky with drooping expressions. Just then, the Nightmare, who had been alert, sneaked forward and gulped down a burnt tuft.

Pheehee—

Guess it’s okay to eat. I awkwardly smiled while smoothing my stiff face.
