Chapter 105
Even flipping through the adventurer’s guide, I couldn’t find a single word about ships that soar through the sky. Not even in the easily obtainable books from the market was there mention of such vessels.
It was the moment when the world’s secrets, known only to wizards, were laid bare.
“Hey!”
Just as I was gazing up in awe at the gigantic ship, a woman on board waved down at me.
“We’re about to depart! If you keep dawdling, you’ll have to catch the next one!”
Her words rang true. It seemed the preparations for departure were in full swing, as wizards bustled about the dock, climbing aboard the massive ship. I waved goodbye to the woman and approached the boat.
There were no procedures to board. The wizards at the entrance were only checking the number of passengers.
Naturally, there were quite a few wizards who recognized me since I had reached the finals of the competition. A mix of envy, jealousy, goodwill, and admiration followed me as I walked.
Once on deck with Nightmare, I received a numbered ticket and a small key from a wizard.
“This is for your assigned room while you use the airship, along with your ticket.”
“Oh, thank you.”
“Have a great trip.”
The wizard who handed me the ticket bowed and approached another wizard, handing them the same items as I received.
I checked my ticket and tucked it into my pocket.
The deck of the airship was quite spacious. Wizards moved freely around it.
As I was wandering about, enjoying the sights, I felt a cool breeze at the far end of the deck, and a woman came soaring toward me.
Her robe and cool sky-blue hair billowed as if riding the wind. Moving as if one with the breeze, she lightly settled before me.
“Hi!”
Was she mimicking the movements of elves?
Mana flowed around her, creating gusts of wind and giving her an almost elven grace. Of course, she was human.
From the blue color of her robe, it was evident she was a member of the Blue Tower. I waved lightly back at her.
“Hello.”
“You’re Starlight… right?”
Only the wizards could casually mention such an embarrassing nickname right to my face. I nodded slightly.
“Just as I thought! You’re even cuter up close than from afar.”
“Thanks for the compliment.”
“Do you happen to have any companions?”
“No.”
“Oh, really? Then why not stick with me? I’m solo as well.”
I briefly pondered her proposal. It was a chance encounter that felt as fleeting as the wind. She seemed harmless enough, so traveling together on the airship wouldn’t be a bad idea.
I dismounted from Nightmare and extended my hand to her.
“I’m Seris, from the Tower of Dawn.”
“I’m Wendy. As you can see, I’m from the Blue Tower!”
Her smile was as refreshing as the breeze.
Wendy and I wandered the deck together, having various conversations, most of which started from her questions.
During one of our chats, I began to sense a massive flow of mana beneath my feet. Wendy, walking beside me, also seemed to notice the phenomenon, glancing around.
“It looks like we’re about to set off.”
“This airship?”
“Yeah.”
The moment Wendy finished speaking, the sails, which had looked decorative, unfurled, and the airship started moving. A tremendous amount of mana began to push the vessel forward.
“Wow…”
I approached the railing of the deck with Nightmare beside me. The massive airship sliced through the white clouds, heading toward the blue sky.
It felt as if we were traversing a sea made of clouds. I spotted the blue sea and small landmasses spread out beneath the clouds, welcomed by the cool wind.
Wheehee—
Nightmare seemed just as excited by the new sights, wagging its tail vigorously. The whip-like tail stirred a gentle breeze.
“What do you think? Amazing, right?”
“It seems like you have a lot of experience riding airships, Wendy.”
“Yeah, it’s the best place to feel the wind!”
Wendy smiled broadly, spreading her arms wide. The blue robe billowed with the refreshing gusts.
From the airship, all of the land could be surveyed. The Karma Empire, the barbaric land of Greenfall, the Mage Tower, and the Aben Kingdom, where my hometown and Monster Island were.
The land that lay dark and isolated looked unmistakably like the world of the undead known as Grimshade Kingdom.
The airship flew over all of it, sailing through the sky where the blue sea spread out endlessly. The sea, seemingly merging with the blue sky, blurred the lines between sky and earth.
Just like the white clouds drifting in the blue sky, the sea too began to be veiled with a mist. We had arrived at Blue Veil, where the ocean was all shrouded in thick fog.
Soon, the secrets of a world I did not know would unfold. I swallowed dryly, hugging Nightmare’s neck.
Woo—
The edge of the sea and its covering of fog began to reveal themselves. Like the end of this world I’d explored through adventures, this place looked abruptly severed by something.
Sea water trickled down through the split path, heading toward the boundless blue sky.
“Wendy.”
“Yeah?”
“What do you think lies beneath that sky?”
“Hmm…? No one knows.”
“Can’t we go down using this airship?”
“We can go down, but there’s no airship that can bring us back up.”
“What happened down there?”
“There has to be a person who went down and came back for anyone to ask what happened… But not a single person has returned. So, no one knows.”
I gazed into the depths of the sea below, where another sky lay hidden. The airship passed by the view carelessly.
The land that had stretched out beneath the sky was no longer visible. The sea, once long and extended like a sky, was also gone. Only the blue sky remained in all directions.
It felt like being dropped into a blue space with nothing to be seen.
Nonetheless, the airship continued onward. Toward the end of the sky.
“Shall we head inside soon?”
“I want to see a bit more.”
“It’ll probably be a while until anything shows up again. It’s better to go in, unpack, and then come back out to enjoy yourself.”
“Oh.”
I nodded at Wendy’s words. I had been so absorbed by this amazing sight I hadn’t even realized I had been here for hours, standing with my bag still on my back.
I headed inside as Wendy suggested. There was no separate stable prepared on the airship. So, I had to share a room with Nightmare.
I took a fluffy blanket from the drawer and spread it out on the floor. Nightmare started preparing for bed there. He cast me a look that suggested he wanted to sleep on my bed with me, but that was practically impossible.
If Nightmare climbed onto the bed, it would definitely be smashed to bits. He was that heavy.
“You stay here.”
Whee—
Nightmare lay down on the blanket I’d spread on the ground with a sulky expression. With the heavy load now off my back, I felt much lighter. Packing all my gear into my bag instead of wearing my full plate showed significant weight differences.
I picked up just a single sword and stepped outside in lighter clothing. Behind me, Nightmare let out a pitiful whine, but I couldn’t take a horse that big around the airship.
Maybe if it had been a small puppy it would have been different.
Many wizards were still roaming around the deck. They seemed to be there to experience the refreshing liberation of the open air and the pleasant breeze coming from every direction.
Wendy was practicing magic alone. She entangled the wind she summoned with the one blowing from nature to attempt to take flight.
Though she swayed uneasily, Wendy successfully lifted herself into the air.
But she surely didn’t just want to float around aimlessly using such magic.
I approached Wendy.
“Oh, you’re here. Was the room alright?”
When I got close, Wendy descended back to the deck and lightly asked. I nodded and questioned her.
“Were you trying to mimic the movements of elves?”
“Uh…? How did you know?”
“It just seemed like it.”
“Hmm, you’re right. I wanted to recreate the magic from the stories featuring elves…”
Wendy trailed off, summoning the wind once more. She began to lift herself up using the gentle breeze she had conjured.
Mana was erupting from her whole body. Wendy was maintaining balance in the air using that method. It must be quite a challenge. There were so many moments she needed to focus, and if she slipped, her body would surely start spinning in circles in midair.
Using her entire body instead of just a part for mana expulsion was a fascinating approach. I began summoning the wind using mana, trying to follow her lead.
It started with a gentle breeze at my feet.
The moment I lifted my foot over the soft wind, a small air spirit that had been circling around me wrapped around my body.
Phaaat-!
An unexpected storm erupted. The spirit, unable to contain the power drawn from my magic, unleashed a violent gust of wind.
“This, this!”
“Whoa…!”
Wendy and I were swept up into a whirlwind on the deck. Our spinning bodies disoriented our vision. Thus, we flew towards the grand sail unfurling in the center of the ship.
“Phew…”
I breathed a sigh of relief, having almost been flung off the ship alongside Wendy. Wendy, seemingly aware of this close call, exhaled shakily, her face pale.
“What… what just happened…? The wind suddenly got so strong…”
Wendy stared at me with wide eyes, trailing off. Since I was the only one nearby, it was only natural she would look my way with suspicion. I awkwardly laughed and avoided her gaze.
Wendy descended from the sail, her anxiety perhaps preventing her from continuing her magic practice.
As the sun set and night fell, the twinkling stars revealed themselves against the pitch-black sky, and beneath them, a new sea unfolded alongside a vast continent.
