Awakening
The next morning, Jinah’s mom takes her to a hospital, as nobody's hair changes in one night without dye. On the way to the hospital, Jinah decides to tell her mom about her dream,
“Mom, I had a weird dream last night.”
Kyung-Hye speaks up,
“Oh? Wanna tell me about it?”
Jinah nods and starts,
“I started off floating in space. I saw the stars all around me and saw earth as well. And when I blinked, I found myself above some sort of planet that was one gigantic city. Everyone there lived perfect lives full of nothing but happiness. There were even things other than humans there as well. When I blinked again, I found myself in front of a gigantic black temple that seemed to be never ending. People with black wings and togas roamed the area, laughing and playing.”
Her mom nods along and listens to her daughter fully, not missing anything,
“When I blinked again, I was in front of a throne bigger than any building I’ve ever seen. Like, so huge. And then a woman appeared on the throne, just as big as it or even bigger. Despite her size, she gave off a warm and welcoming feeling. I blinked again, and she was standing in front of me and was about my height.”
Jinah pauses and takes a breath,
“She talked about the disaster that caused the earth to become what it is now, she talked about dads disappearance, you falling asleep, and brother risking his life just to put food on the table. And then…”
She fights off the urge to cry again,
“She said, ‘Life can be so unfair, can’t it?’ After that, I started crying in her arms as she pulled me into a warm hug. She hugged me like you used to when I was a baby. And, after I calmed down she said, ‘All is fine now, child. You shall be safe in my embrace.’ And then she said that she names me her apostle. After that, I woke up and my hair was black and feathery like hers!”
Kyung-Hye nods as her daughter finishes speaking. She thinks for a second and replies,
“Were the people with black wings similar to the ones that came from the gate yesterday?”
Jinah suddenly has a revelation and nods her head. She then thinks for a second and says,
“But that goddess wasn’t there…”
Her mom thinks aloud,
“What if that bird was the goddess? I mean, in many religions the gods have an animal form.”
Jinah thinks,
‘It’s true… In my world studies class we learned about different religions and mythologies… Even in christianity, Satan was depicted as a snake! What if that bird is the goddess?’
Jinah takes out her phone and writes down what she remembers from her dream. The void of space, the world of pure paradise, the giant temple with the people that look like fallen angels, and the goddess herself. She also writes a note about the possibility of the goddess being able to turn into a massive bird.
As she writes it down she wonders what that dream could mean.
‘Maybe the goddess came from space? No, she came from a gate. But how could a gate hold a god? Maybe she let herself be stuck until she wanted to escape? Gaaaaaah! So confusing!’
As her brain overloads, they arrive at the hospital. Her mom brings her in and tells the nurse at the counter who asks an obvious question,
“Ma’am, are you sure she didn’t just dye it without you knowing?”
Kyung-Hye shakes her and speaks,
“None of the towels had dye on them, and there was no smell when I woke up. Not to mention she woke me up in the middle of the night to tell me about it.”
The nurse sighs and sets them up with a doctor. After a two hour long wait, they eventually get led back into a room. The doctor comes in soon after, a man with a kind smile and a face marred by age. He talks to Kyung-Hye,
“So, Mrs. Park, your daughter here woke up in the middle of the night with completely different hair?”
The doctor looks at the page with symptoms with confusion. He looks at Jinah and asks,
“What color and texture was your hair before this?”
She speaks,
“Uhm, it was brown, straight, and silky.”
The doctor nods and says,
“Hmm. So it went from brown, straight, and silky to black and feathery? Well, I don’t know of any diseases that would cause such a drastic change, much less so quickly. Though, there may be another explanation.”
(Fanon territory)
The doctor brings out a small white rectangular box about the same size as a game console. The box has a slit in the center. He sets it on the counter and says,
“If you don’t mind, please put your hand in here. This machine will check for any mana running through your system. We use it to test if someone is awakened as several weird things happen to some who awaken.”
Jinah thinks about how her brother just one day got muscular. She shrugs and puts her hand in the machine. The machine whirs to life, blowing a small amount of hot air out of a port on the side. The screen on top lights up with a bunch of medical mumbo jumbo, and a single green check appears in a box in the corner.
“Oh! It seems you have indeed awoken! Most likely a caster type! They’re usually the ones whose hair color changes. Congratulations!”
Jinah pulls her hand back and looks at her mom who has a conflicted look on her face. Deep down, Jinah feels an excitement well up. She’s a hunter! Just like her brother! She can protect her family and provide for them too! Though, she knows her brother isn’t going to approve of her going into dungeons.
‘I just wish I knew what my abilities were…’
After talking with the doctor some more and double checking, Jinah and her mother decide to head to the hunters association to register her. Even if she isn’t going into dungeons, she is still required by law to register.
‘I wonder what ranking I’ll get?’
Jinah thinks while looking out her window at the passing cars.
