Chapter 39 - First Meeting of the Three Women
A sudden gust of chilly wind arose in the study, causing the books on the desk to rustle and flip open.
Facing the bone-chilling aura, Tan Xiang merely lifted her head slightly, her gaze icy and disdainful.
“So it’s the ‘Demon Cat’ showing up. What business do you have?”
“Where is Yang Shifei?”
Yue Rui repeated with a cold face, icy light flickering on her slender fingers, and behind her, there was a massive phantom faintly flashing.
Tan Xiang raised an eyebrow.
Over the past two years, she had had a few encounters with Yue Rui and roughly knew that this woman’s nature was pure and her actions were unconventional, indifferent to most things.
It was the first time seeing her in such a menacing state, clearly furious.
“He went out with my lady,” Tan Xiang said calmly. “They haven’t returned yet; they must have been delayed.”
Yue Rui gritted her teeth, her pupils turning vertical. “Where did he go!”
“Why should I tell you?”
Seeing the girl’s aggressive stance, Tan Xiang’s brows furrowed slightly, and an inexplicable annoyance rose within her. “And who are you to Young Master Yang, that you keep demanding to know his whereabouts?”
“I am his dual cultivation partner!” Yue Rui bared her small tiger teeth, her face full of intimidation. “You… you sneaky cat!”
Tan Xiang was suddenly stunned.
Wh-what dual cultivation partner?
“Every day he comes home smelling like you, and I didn’t even vent my anger on you!” Yue Rui stepped closer, her small face full of anger, and her smooth hair seemed to bristle like a cat’s fur. “And now you let him be in danger, gone all night, you—”
“Huh?”
A male voice came from not far down the corridor.
Tan Xiang and Yue Rui both froze, instinctively looking towards the study door.
Yang Shifei stood at the door, his face full of confusion. “Little girl, what are you doing in the Luo Mansion?”
“..”
Yue Rui’s eyes gradually widened, quickly showing an immensely delighted and adorable smile as she flew into his arms.
Yang Shifei held the girl’s shoulders, his expression very strange.
He had sensed something unusual and rushed over to check, only to find Yue Rui and Tan Xiang inexplicably facing off.
The current situation was—
“Young Master has only been in East City for a short time, and he’s already learned to keep a hidden beauty. And it’s a wild cat, no less.”
Tan Xiang’s skirt and hair moved as if blown by an invisible wind, and she spoke coldly, “You’ve even let this wild cat barge in and demand answers from our Luo Mansion. Truly remarkable.”
Yang Sifei sensed trouble brewing and was about to explain.
Yue Rui, just having calmed her anger, realized the situation was delicate. Her bright eyes blinked rapidly as she prepared to cover for him.
“Tan Xiang, Young Master Yang and this demon cat girl became fast friends and are naturally concerned about each other’s safety,” Luo Xian’er interjected softly, arriving just in time. “Guests should be treated with courtesy; there’s no need to be angry.”
Tan Xiang took a deep breath, calming down slightly, and bowed her head. “I overstepped my bounds.”
“And also, Miss Demon Cat,” Luo Xian’er continued, turning her gaze to Yue Rui. “Now that Young Master Yang has returned safely, are you somewhat reassured?”
Yue Rui sniffed and muttered, “So the new scent was yours.”
Luo Xian’er’s ears felt hot. What did this girl mean by scent…
Yang Shifei could only brace himself and say, “Yue Rui became my maid a while ago, and seeing that I hadn’t returned all night, she was understandably worried and a bit upset, leading to this small misunderstanding.”
“That’s right!” Yue Rui raised her hand and echoed. “I’m just big brother’s maid!”
Luo Xian’er remained calm, but her eyes showed subtle complexity.
How could a maid be hugging and calling her master “big brother” like this? What exactly did the young master do with this demon cat behind closed doors?
Luo Xian’er sighed softly, deciding not to delve deeper into the matter.
“Tan Xiang.”
“Yes?”
“Take the Young Master to the medicinal room and tend to his wounds.”
Tan Xiang, somewhat stunned, only now noticed that Yang Shifei’s robe was torn in several places, and his arm bore a few bruises.
She felt a pang of guilt. In her earlier anger, she hadn’t even noticed his injuries.
Calming herself, Tan Xiang approached and took hold of Yang Shifei’s sleeve. “Young Master, please follow me.”
“Alright.”
Yang Shifei released the reluctant Yue Rui and glanced at Luo Xian’er.
Luo Xian’er folded her sleeves and blinked reassuringly, signaling that everything was fine, which put him at ease.
As the two walked down the corridor, Luo Xian’er turned her attention back to the pouting Yue Rui.
“Were you the one who used a little trick to help Young Master Yang enter my residence?”
“…Yes,” Yue Rui said, slightly puffing out her cheeks. “I regret it now.”
Luo Xian’er found herself amused, thinking this girl was quite endearing and thoughtful in her own way for helping the young master.
A very well-behaved and clever little cat girl.
“Don’t be angry. I will make it up to you.” She softened her tone and gestured towards the room. “Why don’t you sit down and chat for a bit? Let’s get to know each other better.”
Yue Rui pouted and grumbled a bit, but she no longer felt anxious. Seeing that the woman before her was ‘similar’, she cooperatively took a seat.
…
In the medicinal room, the sound of grinding herbs was constant.
Yang Shifei watched the slender figure bustling around the medicine shelves and spoke softly, “What did Yue Rui say to you earlier?”
“She was asking about your whereabouts,” Tan Xiang replied coldly as she continued grinding the medicine. “Why didn’t you and Miss Luo return last night?”
“Miss Luo used the Extreme Martial Technique, which has severe side effects. She couldn’t return,” Yang Shifei answered seriously. “I had to find a nearby cave where we rested for the night.”
Tan Xiang paused her actions. “Did you and Miss Luo do that sort of thing?”
Yang Shifei replied frankly, “I absorbed the excess Murk from her body, which helped stabilize her condition. Otherwise, her life would have been in danger.”
“…Thank you,” Tan Xiang said, turning around with a bowl of medicine. Her expression remained cold as she sat beside him. “Take off your clothes, and I’ll apply the medicine.”
Yang Shifei complied and removed his clothing. “Are you angry?”
“Since you and the young lady returned safely, why should I be angry?”
Tan Xiang picked up a bit of ointment, and as she saw his body covered in bruises, she pursed her lips slightly. “Facing Xiang Tianlin alone was reckless.”
“At least I won,” Yang Shifei said with a smile, noticing her softened demeanor. “And I gained some… owww!”
Seeing him wince in pain, Tan Xiang snorted softly, “It’s supposed to hurt.”
Despite her words, her touch became gentler as she applied the ointment.
Yang Shifei calmed himself and asked, “While Miss Luo and I were out, how are things in the city?”
“Chief Constable Tie sent a secret letter soon after,” Tan Xiang replied in a steady tone. “The group from Qi Empire was either killed or captured. They also uncovered a few stragglers in the city and found out where some people from the Yan Empire were hiding, sealing them off like they did with the Hong family.”
Yang Shifei chuckled, “I underestimated the Chief Constable. He’s quite capable.”
“As the top constable in East City, his reputation is well-earned,” Tan Xiang said thoughtfully. “And as for the origin of the black jade from Xiang Tianlin’s house, we found out.”
“Where did it come from?”
“The capital.”
Yang Shifei was stunned. “Are there actually criminals causing trouble in the capital?”
Tan Xiang replied coolly, “It’s not that they are ‘in the capital,’ but that the perpetrator is a person from the capital—the third prince of the current dynasty.”
Yang Shifei’s expression darkened. This matter sounded quite serious.
Why would the Third Prince deliberately send the Ink Yin Jade box, which contained Murk, to the Nine Layers Sect? What was the purpose?
“They went to great lengths to cover their tracks and then sent people to deliver these boxes to various sects and clans across thirteen locations.”
Tan Xiang continued calmly, “Now, those sects have all encountered disturbances, causing a stir in the martial world and attracting government attention. Coupled with the critical moment of transporting the Sacred Martial Stone, where the leader of East City’s top sect suddenly went mad, the news is bound to spread all over the empire.”
Yang Shifei frowned, pondering the third prince’s motives for these actions.
The only plausible reason seemed to be to disrupt the order of the martial world, creating an atmosphere of mutual distrust. This would lead the government to no longer trust martial artists, and the martial artists to become suspicious of the royal family.
If this were the work of enemy forces, it would be understandable. But why would a prince do such a thing?
After a moment of thought, Yang Shifei said, “Could it be that the third prince is planning a rebellion?”
Tan Xiang’s eyes flickered as she nodded. “You’re not wrong.”
But before Yang Shifei could fully grasp the implication, the maid added another piece of information:
“However, it’s not just ‘the third prince wanting to rebel.’ Nearly all the princes are plotting rebellion.”
“…”
