Chapter 11 - Fiancé
The bright sun shone, and the weather today was perfect.
Yang Shifei had just finished washing up and was preparing to practice martial arts when he heard a knock on the door. He hurriedly went to open it.
But upon seeing the visitor, he quickly showed an embarrassed smile.
“Miss Luo.”
“Good morning.”
Luo Xian’er was dressed in a light pink dress today, wearing a small sweater and her black hair tied into a long ponytail that hung down to her chest, exuding a gentle and sweet charm.
She seemed unfazed by last night’s incident and calmly handed him the account book. “Take this first.”
Yang Shifei was somewhat surprised. “Why did Miss Luo come personally?”
“All those trivial matters from before are almost done, so naturally, I can’t neglect the young master.” Luo Xian’er pursed her lips and said softly, “I must fulfill the duties of a host.”
“Miss Luo is thoughtful.” Yang Shifei felt slightly relieved and stepped aside to make room. “Would you like to come in and sit for a while?”
“The young master hasn’t had breakfast yet. How about we go out together?” Luo Xian’er blinked her beautiful eyes. “Shall we taste the local delicacies in town?”
Yang Shifei smiled and nodded. “That would be great.”
He was about to leave but then remembered that Yue Rui was still sleeping soundly inside the house.
But after some thought, he realized that this girl loved sleeping so much that she might not wake up until evening, so there was probably no need to worry too much.
…
In the early morning, the East City was already bustling with activity.
Yang Shifei looked at the pedestrians and commoners rushing to start their day, feeling quite emotional.
Even though there were martial artists capable of flying and traversing great distances in this world, ordinary people still had to work hard day and night to make a living.
He glanced at Luo Xian’er beside him. The young lady had deliberately put on a plain white veil, looking like a beautiful and mysterious flower, leaving people unable to figure her out.
“Miss Luo, isn’t the street too noisy?”
“It’s fine.”
Luo Xian’er walked lightly, her skirt swaying.
Although her voice was soft, Yang Shifei could still hear her clearly.
“Not far from here, there’s a bun shop with excellent craftsmanship.”
“Oh? How did Miss Luo find out?”
“Young master Yang.” Luo Xian’er glanced at him sideways and sighed softly. “Do you think I’ve never been out before?”
Yang Shifei smiled awkwardly. “I just thought you looked like a sheltered lady.”
“…Sigh” Luo Xian’er withdrew her helpless gaze. “I occasionally stroll around the streets, so I’m not completely unaware of the outside world. If not, how could I say that I like the customs and people of the East City?”
“That makes sense.” Yang Shifei pondered for a moment. “It seems I still don’t understand Miss Luo enough.”
Luo Xian’er whispered softly, “I don’t have any complicated thoughts, I just prefer a leisurely life.”
Yang Shifei was somewhat surprised by this response, but considering her identity as a ‘demoness,’ it raised a few questions in his mind.
What had this young lady experienced in the past?
“We’re here.”
Shortly after, Luo Xian’er stopped in front of a lively stall.
The elderly man kneading the dough smiled and waved. “Miss, want some buns? Why didn’t you let little Tan Xiang come over to take the order?”
“Two servings of buns.”
“Hmm?” The old stall owner was taken aback for a moment, then quickly looked at Yang Shifei next to her. A look of surprise appeared on his slightly weathered face. “This…”
“I am from Niujia Village and have just taken up a position at the Clear Moon Pavilion.” Yang Shifei smiled and gestured politely.
The old stall owner nodded in realization and happily took out a few buns from the steamer, along with a bowl of soy milk. “Young man, do your job well. Although Miss Luo doesn’t say much, she is a really good girl with a kind heart!”
“Uh…I understand.”
Yang Shifei returned to Luo Xian’er’s side with the bowl.
“Miss Luo, do you want to eat together?”
“I’ve already eaten.” Luo Xian’er sat upright with elegance and grace. “You just focus on filling your stomach.”
Yang Shifei didn’t hesitate and took a bite of his bun.
But as he tasted the rich aroma in his mouth, he couldn’t help but pause.
The craftsmanship of this old stall owner was quite something.
“I heard that he used to be the head chef at a restaurant in the capital city many years ago. He only retired to the East City when he got older.” Luo Xian’er seemed to have guessed his thoughts. “He doesn’t sell buns on the street for money. According to him, he just likes making buns.”
“Quite sentimental.” Yang Shifei exclaimed and finished his meal in a few bites.
He patted his stomach, realizing that his appetite had indeed increased quite a bit compared to before.
“Young master, next we’ll go to the bridge…” Before Luo Xian’er could finish her sentence, a sturdy man hurried over from a distance.
Yang Shifei was slightly surprised to see that the man was wearing the uniform of a government official and had a sword at his waist.
“Miss Luo.”
But as the man with the sword stopped, he bowed respectfully and said, “The tasks you assigned have all been prepared.”
“Good.” Luo Xian’er nodded slightly, then turned to Yang Shifei. “Young Master, come with me to the government office.”
“Huh?” Yang Shifei’s heart tightened. “Is something wrong?”
Luo Xian’er blinked. “It’s definitely not a bad thing.”
…
After a while, Yang Shifei set foot in the government office of the East City for the first time.
He had seen it from a distance a few days ago, but seeing it up close was still somewhat surprising.
Inside and out, it was more imposing than he had imagined.
“Even in this remote area, it’s still the center of the province.”
Facing the gaze of many eyes at the gate of the government office, Luo Xian’er walked in calmly.
Yang Shifei glanced around secretly and could see many “props” of the yamen, such as the courtroom, gongs and drums, and mahogany staffs, just like in the movies he had seen before.
(T/N: ya·men ˈyä-mən. : the headquarters or residence of a Chinese government official or department.)
Unfortunately, there were no trials going on, so he couldn’t experience the atmosphere of ancient adjudication.
“Miss Luo, you finally came.”
Just then, a hearty laughter came from nearby.
Yang Shifei looked over and saw a group of people walking down the corridor, with the leading man having a square and sturdy face, dressed in embroidered official attire. He must be an official in the government with a high status.
The others beside him were wearing various yamen uniforms, with sharp eyes, obviously not ordinary people.
But upon seeing Luo Xian’er, all of them showed a hint of awe.
Luo Xian’er just nodded coldly, “Governor Li.”
Yang Shifei’s heart skipped a beat.
Facing such rudeness, Governor Li, the leader, smiled even more. “Miss Luo’s requests have all been arranged. You can go to the training ground behind the office. As for this young man beside you…”
The gazes of the group then turned to Yang Shifei, with furrowed brows.
Such a fair and handsome young man, but why was he following Miss Luo?
“I wonder what this young man’s name is?”
Yang Shifei was about to introduce himself, but Luo Xian’er tugged at his sleeve.
Facing the puzzled gazes, the girl remained calm and said, “He is my fiancé.”
“…”
Yang Shifei was stunned by her words, obviously not expecting to be introduced like that.
But the reactions of Governor Li and the others were even more pronounced. They showed an indescribable expression of shock, utterly speechless.
“I-Is this… your fiancé?!”
“Yes,” Luo Xian’er replied calmly. “Is there anything else?”
“N-No, nothing,” Governor Li and the others wiped their foreheads, feeling cold sweat.
The way they looked at him like he was a strange creature made Yang Shifei feel a bit uneasy.
Was Miss Luo’s status and position even higher than he had anticipated?
“Let’s go.”
Luo Xian’er lightly pinched the corner of Yang Shifei’s sleeve and led the way.
Watching the two of them leave side by side, Governor Li and the others stood dumbfounded, only exchanging glances after a while.
Who exactly was this young man, that Miss Luo would favor him?
“Sh-Should we report this matter to the ‘higher-ups’?”
“Hush! Do you want to die?”
Governor Li’s face darkened as he sternly said, “Don’t speak out of turn. We just need to follow orders. Forget what you saw just now. If you encounter that young man again in the future, show him the utmost respect and courtesy. Absolutely no mistakes!”
