The voices of the Pirate's coalition army drowned the battle between Borsalino and the others.

More than 5000 crazed pirates went down from the floating island which now beginning to reshape its environment due to Avalo Pizarro's Devil Fruit ability.

"STEADY MAN! KEEP YOUR CALM!" Said one of the Marine Commodores towards his team under the floating island.

The Marineford's bay where the HQ's main square was situated was shaped like a crescent moon, it was hard to attack and easy to defend in theory, however, with the enemies coming from the sky, its natural advantage had gone!

"OPEN FIRE!!!" Kimimaro ordered his soldiers to begin their assault.

The Marines obeyed his order by using their long-range weapons to whittle down the enemy's number.

As a high-ranked Marine, Kimimaro assumed the role of acting commander when the Fleet Admiral or Admiral ranked person wasn't in HQ or had been incapacitated. 

Tsuru, Borsalino, and Kuzan even Garp were older than him, however, other than Sakazuki who right now wasn't available, these commander tasks fell on his shoulders, why?

Kimimaro ignored Borsalino who battled against three infamous pirates while Kuzan assisted the latter at this point.

Kimimaro's concern fell on the ranks of Commodore and Captains which weren't too proficient with Haki, against 5000 pirates!

Marine's Commodore and Captain ranks were the door for those who had a decent talent for Haki to showcase themselves and make them stand out from the other soldiers, that was why Kimimaro ordered only Commodore and Captain ranks to the battlefield, instead of the lower ranks Marine. They would only become cannon fodder if they were to be sent to this kind of battlefield.
