Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Roasting the Vulture King

"Where are they?" The Vulture King, leading his forces to the location indicated by the scout, was met with nothing but an empty clearing. There was no hunting party, no sign of the three to five hundred men that had been reported.

"Damn it, retreat!" The Vulture King immediately sensed something was wrong. He turned his horse and made to flee, but it wasn't just his men scrambling to escape. A sudden rain of arrows came from nowhere, blotting out the sky.

An arrow struck one of his heavily armored soldiers in the neck. As he watched his best-equipped soldier fall, the Vulture King realized the situation had escalated beyond his control.

"Retreat, quickly! Scatter and flee!" The Vulture King didn't hesitate. He urged his warhorse forward, trying to make his way into the forest to break the ambush. Some of his troops had not yet caught up. If he could regroup, there was still a chance for him to turn the tide.

As long as Eagle's Nest and his forces were intact, he still had hope.

Unfortunately, what greeted him was a surge of intense heat, followed by Dornishmen bursting from the flames, screaming as they charged toward him. The heat blasted him off his horse, throwing him to the ground.

From above, a bronze dragon appeared, slowly emerging from the trees. Draezell, clad in armor, sat confidently in the saddle. It was unclear whether he had noticed the Vulture King, but the sound of thundering hooves came from all directions.

"I surrender! I surrender! I can help you fight Ullen Wyl!" the Vulture King pleaded, but his words were cut short as a sword sliced past him, making him stumble. He barely had time to react before a massive morningstar smashed into his skull.

His helmet crumpled inward, and the Vulture King's world instantly darkened. His mind became a haze, his eyes seemed to be covered in red, and he tried to speak, but no words came.

Another strike came from a long sword, slicing through the Vulture King's chainmail and leaving a shallow cut across his neck.

No, I can't die. I am the Vulture King, I still have a mission. Uren, you seven-faced curse of a bastard, I will avenge this! Run, run!

The Vulture King stumbled, trying to move away from his position, but another hammer blow struck his helmet.

This time, the helmet crumpled further. The knight from House Dondarrion, seeing the enemy still alive after the hammer strike, glanced at his mace with a puzzled expression. He was about to turn his horse to deliver another blow when he saw Vermithor dive from the sky once again. The knight hurriedly turned to chase down other fleeing soldiers.

A jet of dragon fire descended, engulfing every Dornishman in its path, burning them all, including the Vulture King.

He was freed.

Red Mountain

A large and makeshift camp was set up here, as knights from House Wyl slowly bringed the reinforcements that Lord Ullen Wyl promised. Their efforts to recruit new soldiers for the Vulture King had met with failure. Prince Qoren had even closed the gates of Sunspear Keep, ordering the capture of "Old Vulture", the leader of a Black Market gang name "Vulture Gang". Without more help, The group could only push westward.

Fortunately, they hadn't encountered dragons.

Donald Tarly stood atop a rise, coldly watching the camp. Around him, Tarly hunters and cavalry were ready, with more than twenty Dornish heads at the feet of they Lord as proof of their success.

Their group moved into the heart of the Red Mountain, using narrow paths to avoid Dornish patrols and Prince's forces. They moved swiftly, meeting with Draezell's signal nearby.

The signal was the sight of Valar, riding Silverwing.

Silverwing landed gracefully on a high ground, silent and still.

"Prince Valar, it's time," Draezell said.

Valar nodded, lowering his visor. Silverwing took to the skies, climbing high before spreading its wings and gliding toward the camp.

"Forward!"

The Tarly's forces began to move slowly

"Dragon! Dragon! Dragon!"

The camp erupted into chaos in an instant. Almost everyone fell into disarray the moment they saw Silverwing dive down.

"Avoid the dragon's flame, avoid the dragon's flame!"

The knights shouted, but their cries were drowned out by the roar of Silverwing's dragon fire. The sound of Tarly cavalry charging followed immediately.

At the moment when the dragon's flame was about to engulf them, the Dornish knights could only think one thing:

House Wyl was finished.

Wyl Castle

Lors Ullen Wyl looked suspiciously at the knight before him.

"Are you saying the Vulture King has already received our people?"

"Yes, my lord," the knight nodded. "The Vulture King will reach the border in two days and will strike at the Dondarrion family and those three young lords' new territories."

Earl Uren let out a sigh of relief.

Finally, he could rest easy for a while.

He took the cup of wine the knight handed him.
