Chapter 54 - Mountain Flood
In the evening, Mai Dongzi searched for a while before finally finding a pine tree that, though not very tall, had a sturdy trunk and many branches, where she set up her treehouse.
Because of an uneasy feeling, Mai Dongzi made the branches supporting the treehouse thicker and secured them more tightly with mutated vines.
Her instincts were correct. In the middle of the night, a strong wind began to blow outside.
Mai Dongzi felt the treehouse swaying from side to side. She used her mental power to check outside and found that the strong wind was just a sign that rain was coming and was not too severe.
The treehouse was swaying with the tree, not because it was in danger of being blown away. There was no immediate risk of it being blown down.
Soon, she saw lightning flashing through the ventilation gaps in the window, followed by the sound of thunder, and then heard the rain pouring down outside.
The rain was heavy, but the wind was not as strong as before, and the treehouse only swayed lightly.
This was the first time Mai Dongzi encountered rain since arriving on Water Blue Star.
Unable to resist, she got up from the makeshift bed made from her parachute and moved to the window on the porch to open the window’s cover.
Thanks to the eaves blocking the rain, even though the wind and rain outside were intense, the rainwater did not blow in.
However, a stream of moisture came in, which, though a bit cold, carried a refreshing scent.
It was a distant yet familiar smell from her memory.
Though it was dark and she couldn’t see much around her, Mai Dongzi looked outside for quite a while before closing the window and returning to her bed.
Once she lay down, she listened to the sound of the rain for a long time, lost in her thoughts, and eventually fell into a hazy sleep.
The next morning, when Mai Dongzi woke up, the rain was still pouring down, and it showed no signs of letting up.
She propped up the wooden board on the porch’s window and looked outside, thinking that the rain might continue throughout the day.
While she was out collecting energy plants yesterday, she had naturally paid attention to the terrain of the hillside and noticed some signs.
Watching the heavy rain continuously wash over the surrounding mountains and forests, with countless small streams flowing down the hillside as if it were covered in small rivers, Mai Dongzi decided it was best to stay in the treehouse until the rain stopped.
As a cultivator, even if confined to a small hut, she would never feel bored. Moreover, as someone who practices all three types of martial arts, a significant portion of her time is already taken up by training.
It was past one in the afternoon when Mai Dongzi stopped her training due to hunger. She ate roasted meat and drank vegetable soup while watching the world outside.
Although the heavy rain that had lasted half the night and all morning had eased to moderate rain, there were still no signs of it stopping.
Just as Mai Dongzi finished eating and was about to go outside to stretch her muscles on the porch, she suddenly heard a very dull, rumbling sound coming from the mountaintop.
Reacting swiftly, she pulled up the hood of her combat suit to cover her hair, then jumped onto the roof of the treehouse. From there, she pushed off and leaped toward the main trunk of the pine tree, clinging tightly to the tree.
The viewers in the live stream, who were bored of watching the rain, suddenly became excited. They were well aware that whenever Miss Lucy made any extreme movements, it usually meant a major event was about to happen.
The vast majority quickly switched to the god’s-eye view to see what was going on around them.
Although everyone felt that something significant was about to occur, they were shocked to see the yellow-brown water, carrying countless debris, rushing down from the mountaintop. In an instant, it surged to the tree where Miss Lucy was, and the water level covered one-third of the tree trunk.
Yesterday, they had roughly estimated the height of the treehouse, knowing that the trees on the hillside were no more than eight meters tall, and the treehouse itself was only four or five meters high.
The water rushing down from the mountain seemed dangerously close to the treehouse. The impact of the water against the tree trunk created splashing waves that hit the wooden walls of the treehouse, accompanied by a deafening roar. The viewers found the scene both terrifying and exhilarating.
They could see smaller trees around being knocked down by the rushing water, uprooted and swept downhill along with the current.
Fortunately, although the tree where Miss Lucy was located swayed a bit, it was not in immediate danger of being toppled.
The most dangerous part of the flood was the initial surge of water. The subsequent flows had less force and were therefore less dramatic.
The viewers in the live stream were conflicted. They certainly didn’t want to see Miss Lucy getting hurt or eliminated, but they also hoped for some thrilling live scenes.
Miss Lucy was unaware of the viewers’ mixed feelings. After the initial impact of the flash flood, she didn’t rush back to the treehouse, fearing that another wave of flood might come.
Although the pine tree she was in had not been knocked down by the flash flood, the tree had tilted slightly from the force of the flood’s debris-laden front. If another wave of similar impact hits, the tree might not withstand it.
Being caught in a flash flood is much more dangerous than being caught in a regular flood because flash floods rush down from the mountains with tremendous speed and continuously encounter obstacles along the way.
If a person is swept up by the water and slammed into a tree with such force, survival is unlikely unless they are extremely fortunate.
Therefore, after realizing the flash flood had erupted, Miss Lucy didn’t dare stay in the treehouse and instead directly clung to the trunk of the pine tree.
Before the flash flood reached her, Mai Dongzi quickly took out the parachute ropes from her space backpack. She planned to use the ropes to swing to another pine tree if she felt her current tree was at risk of being knocked over by the flood.
Fortunately, her pine tree withstood the impact, and there was no second wave of flood.
Mai Dongzi waited until the floodwaters had fully drained away and the streams on the hillside had returned to their usual small creek state. Once she confirmed that the danger from the mountaintop had passed, she relaxed and returned to the treehouse.
Although her combat suit had rain protection, she wasn’t interested in staying out in the rain clinging to the tree.
The flood did not affect the rain, and it continued to pour heavily after the flood. Mai Dongzi, still unable to go down, resumed her training.
The rain lasted for two full days before finally stopping. It later turned from heavy rain to light rain, and there were no more flash floods.
It was on the second day after the rain stopped, and the twenty-third day since the survival game show began, that Mai Dongzi finally came down from the pine tree.
The once vibrant hillside had been devastated by the flash flood, with shrubs and herbaceous plants among the pine trees almost completely gone.
