Chapter 26
Chapter 26: The Coward
“Is it true? Is it haunted?”
“And you’re going to exorcise it?”
“Right now?!”
At night, the sound of Zhang Shaoqing’s incredulous question echoed in the dormitory.
He looked at Wen Yang with a dazed expression, scratching his head: “It’s just for some money, aren’t you afraid you’ll get taken out on the spot?”
“I don’t drink alcohol, I’ll sit at the kids’ table.”
Ning Chu had already figured out where to sit at Wen Yang’s mourning banquet.
If Wen Yang hadn’t let slip the info today, Ning Chu wouldn’t have known this guy was planning to deliver himself to be devoured by a ghost.
Goddamn, not only do I have to be careful of those seductive vixens chasing after Wen Yang, but I also have to watch out for the ghostly monsters eyeing him.
“Is it really necessary to curse me like that?” Wen Yang spread his hands helplessly, “I’m just going to check the situation tonight, pull my uncle tomorrow and see how he resolves it, or let him handle it.”
“I think we might as well just call your uncle, otherwise we’ll all have to file for graduate school recommendations.”
Ning Chu tried to scare Wen Yang as much as possible, hoping to dissuade him from going.
“My uncle’s health isn’t great,” Wen Yang frowned awkwardly.
Indeed, after years of being drained by ghostly monsters, how could he be in good health?
He rolled his eyes silently, pretty sure he had triggered the ghost-exorcising plot in this novel. Before writing this part, he just happened to binge the Exorcist series, and since he couldn’t get enough, he decided to write a segment of his own.
The plot goes roughly like this: In the late night, Wen Yang arrives alone at the school teaching building, encounters a ghost in a red dress, and with quick reflexes manages to stab the ghost with a weapon, performing exorcism multiple times until the ghost is weak and completely purified.
What the hell am I writing?!
Thinking this, Ning Chu wanted to slap himself.
So there really are ghosts in this world, and they can be seen and touched.
It definitely feels more dangerous now.
“I’m heading out.”
“Wait! I’m going too!” Ning Chu couldn’t rest easy, quickly leaping up and grabbing Wen Yang’s arm, “Hold on, let’s bring some self-defense weapons.”
“Why take it so seriously?” Wen Yang said with a mix of laughter and tears, “There are no ghosts in this world. It’s probably just a prank.”
“Isn’t your uncle an exorcist?”
“Yeah, he told me it was just feudal superstition.”
That’s probably because your uncle doesn’t want you to know the true nature of exorcist jobs, right?
Ning Chu couldn’t be bothered to argue further with him and turned to Zhang Shaoqing and asked, “Are you in?”
“I’ve been meaning to suggest going together!”
“What about Wang Jie?”
Wang Jie was still battling in the game and quickly rejected them with lightning speed: “Promotion matches! Don’t disturb me!”
This damn宅男!
Three of them, plus a 1.6-meter harmless little guy…
Ning Chu looked around the dormitory, trying to find some self-defense weapons, but Zhang Shaoqing opened the wardrobe and pulled out a huge wrench.
“Here, a weapon.” He seemed quite excited, lightly weighing the wrench, and swung it in the air towards the empty space, a smirk on his face, “No problem, if I really see a ghost, I can just swing this and kill it!”
You’re hiding such a lethal weapon in the dorm?! Planning to turn into Ma Jiajue at night or what!
Seeing Zhang Shaoqing’s excited and twisted smile, Ning Chu couldn’t help but shudder and unconsciously step back to distance himself from him.
“Got a fruit knife here too.” Zhang Shaoqing pulled out a short knife from the drawer and turned to hand it to Wen Yang, “If you see a ghost, just run.”
“I’ve said it before, there are no ghosts in this world.” Wen Yang sighed, “My uncle is just creating superstitions, why don’t you guys believe that?”
He tried to dissuade the two, but Ning Chu had already laced up his sneakers, looking worried, while Zhang Shaoqing was holding the wrench with excitement, as if waiting for a ghost to show up.
“Alright then…”
Wen Yang helplessly shook his head: “I see you two have nothing better to do at night but go out seeking thrills with me.”
“No way, it’s just that Ning Chu baby is worried about you~” Zhang Shaoqing teased.
Ning Chu shivered, feeling disgustingly goosebumps all over: “Get lost!”
“Going to the teaching building at night, most likely we’ll encounter a few couples making out.” Zhang Shaoqing ignored his insults, grinning, “Don’t mistake those couples for ghosts.”
“……”
Why is hunting wild always so casually mentioned in your mouths?
Do couples in this world not afford hotels?
Ning Chu sighed internally, and when he looked up, he saw Wen Yang and Zhang Shaoqing already opening the door to head out. He hurriedly ran after them, panicking, “What about my weapon?!”
“You? If you really see a ghost, just run faster.”
“Not having a weapon makes me feel insecure!”
He jogged to catch up with the two, glancing down at the pitch-black little garden below the dormitory.
Feeling a bit nervous… even though the novel never mentioned that ghosts can harm anyone, but how it works in reality is still uncertain.
“I’ve told you repeatedly, there are really no ghosts in this world.” Wen Yang reiterated, “It’s just some prank.”
In late September, the annoying sounds of cicadas and frogs had faded, but the mosquitos under the streetlights still gathered in swarms.
It was already past nine at night, the road outside the dormitory only had a few students walking in groups; only the basketball court seemed lively, the sounds of which could be heard from afar.
Ning Chu closely followed Wen Yang and Zhang Shaoqing, trailing slightly behind, his gaze nervously darting to the dark corners.
Even knowing it’s a beautiful female ghost, he still felt a bit cowardly.
“It should be this building.” Wen Yang stopped in front of the teaching building.
Ning Chu instinctively looked up, the entire building concealed in the night’s shadows, and amidst the dimness, he seemed to see figures flashing through the corridor.
“Looks a bit scary.”
“You’re such a coward?” Zhang Shaoqing teased him as usual, “Why don’t you wait here for us?”
“Ha! I once danced on a grave at midnight!”
Ning Chu retorted dismissively, while quietly shifting to stand behind Wen Yang, continuing to mock, “Don’t let it be you who runs away the fastest.”
“Stop making noise, let’s go upstairs.” Wen Yang turned on his cellphone flashlight.
In the light, the shadowy veil of the teaching building was lifted, and Ning Chu’s heart settled a bit.
Following closely behind Wen Yang, the three stepped into the teaching building.
Since the semester had just started, Ning Chu had only visited the teaching building a few times during freshman lectures.
The first floor had the lobby, a large auditorium, and offices. As they walked down the corridor toward the lobby, the three of them suddenly stopped.
“Wooo~”
As they entered the lobby, a low sobbing sound floated from a distance, sending goosebumps down Ning Chu’s spine; instinctively, he huddled to the side, only to suddenly feel a pair of hands tightly clutching his arm.
“I’m freaking out! I’m freaking out! I’m freaking out!” Wen Yang clutched Ning Chu’s arm tight, his face pale with fright, “There really is a ghost?!”
“Wait, you run first…”
Don’t, you’re too scared to run anyway.
Ning Chu was taken aback, then turned his head to see Zhang Shaoqing had somehow retreated ten meters.
Is it just me who’s the bravest?
“Wooo~”
The eerie crying brought a chilling sensation, and all three of them couldn’t help but have their hearts race.
“Slow down~ Ha~”
“……”
The hand clinging tightly to his arm released, and Wen Yang nodded as if this were to be expected: “See, I told you there are no ghosts, just feudal superstition.”
He glanced at Ning Chu beside him, and had to admit, Ning Chu’s body was very soft, emanating a faint delicate scent.
“Really ran into a couple making out, tsk tsk.” Zhang Shaoqing had somehow returned to his previous position, commenting, “Sounds pretty nice.”
Your earlier performance really doesn’t live up to the status of either protagonist or villain!
