Chapter 77 - Challenge
“You’ve arrived,” Tao Yue said, walking over to the two of them with a smile. At this moment, it was clear that most people were standing with Pill Peak. Tao Yue, as an important member of Miaoyun Pavilion, was unreservedly standing on their side.
Tian Feirong looked displeased as he stared at the two people sitting there with their arms crossed, scrutinizing them. He asked, “Senior Sister Tao, who are they?”
Tao Yue chuckled lightly. “You two should have heard of their names. One is Li Shurong, a sixth-level Qi Refining cultivator who can already refine ninth-grade high-level pills. The other is Liu Lingge, a seventh-level Qi Refining cultivator, also a ninth-grade high-level alchemist. They are currently the most promising disciples in Pill Peak who are likely to be accepted under Master Lin’s guidance.”
Tian Feirong and the little fatty immediately understood. They had gathered a lot of information, and after selling pills, they had intentionally inquired about Pill Peak. Although they hadn’t seen these two in person, they had heard their names often. It was said that they had exceptional talent in alchemy, were being specially trained by Pill Peak, and that some of the Pill Peak elders had already expressed their intention to take them on as disciples. However, both of them were more eager to become disciples of the peak master.
“Kid, you’ve heard of the names of these two alchemists, right? Are you scared? If you’re scared, hurry up and admit defeat, kneel, and apologize!” one of the students shouted at the two of them, hoping to take this opportunity to get closer to these two alchemists. Even if it was just to get on their good side, it would be easier to ask them for favors in the future.
As soon as the student spoke, a chorus of voices agreeing with him followed, along with some boos directed at the two of them. Li Shurong looked disdainful, while Liu Lingge frowned in disgust. Both of them could tell that these students had no real skills, just relying on bluster and trickery to act tough in front of others.
Tian Feirong and the little fatty exchanged looks, actually somewhat confused about why these people were acting this way.
Tian Feirong pointed at Li Shurong. “Senior Brother Li, ninth-grade high-level alchemist.”
The little fatty pointed at Liu Lingge. “Senior Sister Liu, ninth-grade high-level alchemist.”
The two said in unison, “But what do you two alchemists want with us? We’re not alchemists.” So why are you trying to show off to us? Are alchemists trying to act tough in front of ordinary cultivators now?
Seeing the two of them speaking in unison, the faces of the two opposite them turned bright red with anger and embarrassment. Tao Yue couldn’t help but chuckle, then seemingly kindly explained, “They probably want to spar with the alchemist behind you to test their alchemy skills, right, you two alchemists?”
Liu Lingge angrily retorted, “Isn’t it obvious?”
Tian Feirong swiftly pulled out the folding fan he hadn’t used in days, flicked it open with a snap, and fanned himself with a casual, graceful gesture. “What do you mean by ‘obvious’? Do you have a challenge letter? Without a challenge letter, our alchemist isn’t so idle that he’ll just accept anyone’s challenge.”
The little fatty chimed in, “That’s right, Second Brother Tian’s right. Besides, just because someone issues a challenge letter doesn’t mean we have to accept it. Pill Peak’s alchemists won’t waste time on challenges with some nameless student. If there’s no benefit, we won’t bother! Second Brother Tian, you agree, right?” Tian Feirong placed a hand on the little fatty’s shoulder and gave him a meaningful look.
Tao Yue rubbed her stomach, amused by the antics of the two. However, this way, the two alchemists from Pill Peak were now in a difficult position.
After all, if the other side came to cause trouble, why should they follow their rules? It was already beneath Pill Peak to challenge new students. If they won the challenge, it would be fine, but if they lost, Pill Peak would be utterly embarrassed.
Tao Yue couldn’t help but feel a little excited.
Not far away, on the upper floors of the Xingyue Trading Association, Jiang Yan and Zhou Li, who had been watching the situation, found it somewhat amusing. Zhou Li laughed so hard that he almost collapsed, “Those two junior brothers have some guts, huh? Looks like Pill Peak got slapped in the face, they brought it on themselves.”
Jiang Yan’s eyes flashed with amusement, “I guess Master Lin must have instructed them after returning, that’s why they’re acting this way.”
Zhou Li remembered something, “I heard even some alchemists from Pill Peak secretly bought Miaoyun Pavilion’s beauty-enhancing pills. I guess they’re jealous of the spirit stones Miaoyun Pavilion is earning and want to secretly figure out the pill recipe. But until now, Miaoyun Pavilion is the only place selling it; no one else has it. Pill Peak’s probably getting restless.”
Jiang Yan raised an eyebrow, surprised by Gu Yao’s confidence. Those pills must have been something Gu Yao had crafted in no time, and yet they had left Pill Peak’s people at a loss. “Maybe we at Xingyue Trading Association should cooperate with Miaoyun Pavilion and push these pills to the market. As for business within the academy, we’ll stay out of it.”
The success of these pills had even surprised Jiang Yan, who had been keeping an eye on things. No one ever complained about having too many spirit stones. Of course, what he was most excited about was Gu Yao’s potential. He believed Gu Yao would continue to introduce more beauty-enhancing pills in the future.
Zhou Li’s eyes lit up as well. “That sounds good, Senior Brother Jiang. But there’s one problem: right now, only Gu Yao can refine those pills. His energy is limited, so he can’t produce enough pills for us to stock up.”
Jiang Yan stroked his chin thoughtfully. “It seems we should go directly to Gu Yao and talk to him.”
While they quickly made plans on their side, on the other side, Li Shurong and Liu Lingge were also being cornered by Tian Feirong and the little fatty. With just a few words, they were forced into a position where they couldn’t retreat without admitting defeat. Their only option was to force the opposing alchemist into a direct confrontation and defeat them, in order to restore Pill Peak’s reputation, including their own.
So, with Tian Feirong and the little fatty pushing them on, Li Shurong and Liu Lingge set the terms.
“If you lose, you have to leave the commercial street and never sell another pill here again. If we lose, one of the shops here will be yours. The shop will stay where it is, and you can take it if you have the ability!”
The shop they were talking about wasn’t just owned by the two of them; it was a shared venture among several like-minded alchemists. They had hired people to run the shop, and any pills they refined were sold there as a source of income.
Tao Yue whispered to Tian Feirong and the little fatty, explaining the background of the pill shop. Upon hearing this, the two of them brightened up. This was exactly what they needed; with that shop, they could leave the small stall behind. Whoever wanted it could have it.
“Wait here. We’ll notify the alchemist behind us,” Tian Feirong said. He then took out a communication talisman, spoke a few words into it, and the talisman turned into a streak of spiritual light before vanishing in front of everyone.
Meanwhile, Gu Yao, who hadn’t left his courtyard for several days, took Chi Changye with him early in the morning to the Archive Pavilion. They went to browse through some miscellaneous books to relax their minds. The Archive Pavilion had many travel journals and collections of strange stories, and Gu Yao was thoroughly engrossed in them. Such books were rarely touched by others, since entering the Archive Pavilion required spending spirit stones—who would waste their spirit stones on useless books like these?
“Senior Brother, could you help me grab that book from the top shelf?” a delicate female student asked shyly, looking at Chi Changye, who was standing by the bookshelf.
Chi Changye’s response was to immediately turn around and step aside. After all, cultivators weren’t ordinary people; they could easily reach the books on the shelf themselves. His action was simply to avoid unnecessary interaction.
The female student was so embarrassed by his reaction that her face turned bright red, and her eyes looked as though she might cry. Other male students in the Archive Pavilion looked on with indignation. If it weren’t for the pavilion’s rule against making a fuss, they would have challenged Chi Changye to a duel. All they could do was glare at him in anger.
Gu Yao’s eyes briefly glanced at Chi Changye. When he saw him walking closer, he quickly turned his attention back to the pages of his book. Just then, a burst of light appeared—the message talisman from Tian Feirong had arrived. Gu Yao immediately sent out his spiritual sense to check the contents and heard Tian Feirong’s message clearly.
Gu Yao stood up and looked at Chi Changye. “The people from Pill Peak are coming.”
Chi Changye put down the book in his hand. “Then let’s go. They’re definitely here to cause trouble, and they’re targeting you, so you have to handle this.”
“Alright.” Gu Yao placed the book back on the shelf, and together with Chi Changye, they walked out side by side. The female student behind them, seeing that Chi Changye didn’t spare her a glance, stomped her foot in frustration.
Once outside the Archive Pavilion, Gu Yao kept his eyes focused ahead, not glancing sideways. It wasn’t long before someone passed by them, and Gu Yao couldn’t help but feel annoyed. Here we go again.
Sure enough, another female student threw a flirtatious look at Chi Changye. This had already happened several times on the way here, including within the Archive Pavilion, where various female students had tried to strike up conversations with him under different pretenses.
Gu Yao understood what was going on. After the battle with the Mad Snake Gang, Chi Changye’s reputation had spread quickly throughout the Outer Court. Plus, with his exceptional looks and demeanor, he was very popular among the female students. Even though he hadn’t changed his role as a servant, he was still highly sought after. These female students were doing everything they could to try to separate him from Gu Yao.
“Hey, Gu, stop right there!”
A female student riding a flying magic tool rushed in front of them, followed by a man and a woman. The woman who had just jumped off the tool was not bad-looking, and her attire, adorned with magical robes and spiritual light, made it clear she was wealthy—someone who didn’t lack spirit stones.
The man and woman behind her were very respectful, falling a few steps behind, obviously her servants and attendants.
“Did you call me, Miss?” Gu Yao raised an eyebrow, first looking at Chi Changye, then turning to face the roadblock.
“Are you deaf? Who else would I be calling if not you? Tell me, how many spirit stones do you want to let go of your servant?” The female student arrogantly pointed at Chi Changye and gave orders like a princess.
Gu Yao stood there, dumbfounded, then turned to look at Chi Changye in confusion. What was this… buying a person?
If Tian Feirong and the little fatty were here, they would tell Gu Yao that it was actually allowed for students to transfer servants to each other in the academy. After all, servants were considered private property that students brought with them.
Chi Changye didn’t expect to be in this kind of situation either. He thought the previous incidents had already been surprising, but this was a first. Though it wasn’t like he hadn’t encountered such things before, he usually ignored them. He believed these incidents would gradually decrease over time, but he had never experienced someone trying to “buy” him with spirit stones.
Chi Changye naturally had no affection for this kind of female student. Grabbing Gu Yao’s arm, he said, “Let’s go.”
Gu Yao, still dazed, replied, “Okay.”
“Stop right there! You’re not going anywhere!” The female student wasn’t willing to give up. She and the two attendants immediately reached out to block their way again.
