Chapter 29 - Coincidence
Tang Yuan didn’t rush back to the hotel after leaving the restaurant.
It was still early, and the main reason she chose this restaurant was because there was a bustling night market just around the corner.
Leaving her car in the parking lot, Tang Yuan set out on foot toward the night market.
Dragon City was an incredibly prosperous city, but the gap between rich and poor was stark. Some indulged in luxury, while others struggled just to survive.
In the original’s memories, she had never once set foot in the city’s liveliest night markets. She had never strolled through the food stalls or seen street vendors. Raised in luxury all her life, she hadn’t even known places like this existed in Dragon City.
Looking at the bustling market ahead, Tang Yuan was suddenly reminded of the first small world she had transmigrated into. It was a high school romance setting. Her family background was ordinary, and she frequently ate at street stalls.
Life as a student was carefree. She had loving parents, enough allowance, and not much material desire. Life was simple and easy, and she lived contentedly.
Unfortunately, as the tragic first love who died young, her fate had been sealed. Although she had been perfectly healthy, she still died in a car accident.
That day, the sun was shining brightly, and the male lead, who secretly admired her, had planned to confess his feelings. But instead, he witnessed her die in the accident right before his eyes, leaving him with a lifelong regret.
At the time, it was her first time transmigrating into a book, and she had no experience. The cruel plot had enraged her to no end. The male lead was clearly her nemesis. As long as he liked her, she was doomed to die and become a source of emotional torment for him.
It was as if death came at the snap of a finger. Every time she was about to die, she still felt scared!
Tang Yuan rubbed her arms, trying to smooth down the rising goosebumps. Thankfully, the system had erased the memories of her moments before death in each world. She didn’t dare imagine how much it had hurt.
She hadn’t noticed that someone was following her not far behind her.
After crossing a pedestrian street, Tang Yuan arrived at the bustling market. Barbecue vendors were shouting to attract customers, and the streets were lined with small stools and low tables, with groups of people gathered around them, some drinking milk tea, others enjoying alcohol.
She had only wandered through the crowd for a short while and started feeling sticky sweat form on her skin—it was hot.
Standing in front of a barbecue stall, she picked two skewers. She wasn’t hungry, just here to soak in the lively atmosphere.
Following the flow of people, she bought a cup of fried yoghurt, then a bowl of fruit slices, and, of course, some takoyaki.
She wanted to try new things but couldn’t eat much. After a few bites, she lost interest and carried the rest in her hands.
Up ahead, a scratch-off lottery stall surrounded by a crowd caught her attention. She had never tried one before but had seen videos online where people won five million yuan—not that it was a lot, but it seemed fun to play.
Squeezing her way through the crowd, she scanned the code to pay and got a 20-yuan ticket. Imitating the people beside her, she carefully scratched it off and checked the results, only to find that she hadn’t won a single yuan.
Tang Yuan pouted in disappointment—so much for fun.
Just as she was feeling let down, she felt someone brush against her hand.
Instantly alert, she turned her head to look behind her.
There stood a woman in a white blouse with a V-shaped neckline, her long black hair falling straight down over her shoulders and her skin so pale it seemed to glow. Standing in the crowd, her beauty was so striking that Tang Yuan couldn’t look away.
It was Jiang Zi.
Jiang Zi gently took the random items Tang Yuan held, softly squeezed her fingers, and then pulled out her phone to scan and pay 5,000 yuan.
“Want to continue playing?”
“Ah, oh…” Tang Yuan was momentarily flustered, turning her head back to the stall owner. “I’ll want a 50-yuan ticket.”
She paused briefly and then added, “A hundred of them.”
Jiang Zi had given her way too much money.
This scratch-off wasn’t just a casual thrill anymore—it was about to become a full-on splurge.
Buying so many tickets at once naturally drew the attention of those around her, who started watching her intently, eager to see the results of her scratch-offs.
After finally scratching them all, she ended up with 5,100 yuan, making a profit of just 80 yuan. Even so, Tang Yuan was grinning ear to ear.
After receiving the 5,100 yuan transfer, Tang Yuan and Jiang Zi stepped away from the crowd. “Looks like my luck isn’t too bad after all.”
Tang Yuan tucked her phone into her bag and looked up at Jiang Zi, her smiling eyes curved like crescent moons. “Why are you here? Have you eaten?”
Jiang Zi only responded to the last question: “Not yet.”
Tang Yuan’s smile quickly vanished, replaced by a serious expression. “Why haven’t you eaten yet? With all that energy you use during dance practice, it’s already so late, and you still haven’t eaten! What if you get sick?”
Grabbing Jiang Zi’s wrist, she insisted, “No, no, I’m taking you to get a meal.”
“Here, why don’t you start with the snacks you’re holding and fill your stomach a little first.”
Those were the snacks Tang Yuan had already eaten but left unfinished. Jiang Zi’s eyes softened as a playful smile spread across her face. She raised the snacks in her hand and teased, “Mmm, I think after finishing these, I might not need a meal anymore.”
Tang Yuan, realizing how much she had bought, was left speechless momentarily.
“I’m serious. This is enough,” Jiang Zi said as she picked up the takoyaki, of which only three and a half remained—one was half-eaten.
Jiang Zi casually used the toothpick to pick up the half-eaten takoyaki, eating it with the same natural grace as before, without the slightest hint of disdain.
“I…” Eaten that.
Tang Yuan swallowed her words, watching as Jiang Zi drank from her milk tea through the same straw, finishing off the grilled squid skewers, fried yoghurt, and fruit salad.
Jiang Zi pointed to the corner of her mouth where some barbecue sauce had smeared and suddenly leaned in close.
Startled, Tang Yuan took two steps back, nearly bumping into a passerby. Jiang Zi quickly reached out and pulled her back.
The warmth from Jiang Zi’s grip on her wrist was startling, and Tang Yuan’s gaze landed on the corner of Jiang Zi’s mouth. Without thinking, the words just slipped out: “I… I’m not licking it.”
Jiang Zi couldn’t help but chuckle, her expression a mix of amusement and exasperation. She lightly tapped Tang Yuan on the forehead. “What kind of nonsense are you thinking? Do you have tissues in your bag?”
Tang Yuan was so embarrassed she could dig a magical castle with her feet. She quickly looked down, pretending to rummage through her bag, “Oh, uh, yeah, yeah, I’ve got some.”
After wiping her mouth, Jiang Zi tossed the trash and walked back.
“Do you want to continue walking around?”
Tang Yuan shook her head. “No more.”
“Let’s go back?”
“Mm-hmm.”
Feeling awkward and flustered, Tang Yuan obediently let Jiang Zi take her hand, leading them through the crowd and out of the night market.
Tang Yuan suddenly remembered she had booked a hotel.
“Jiang Zi, did you book a hotel?”
“No.”
“Did you bring your ID?”
“No.” Jiang Zi stopped in her tracks, looking down at Tang Yuan, the streetlamp casting flickering shadows across her face. “Does Little Tang Yuan not want me to stay with her?”
Tang Yuan’s voice became hurried, “I didn’t mean that.”
“Then… how about we just head back instead?” Tang Yuan suggested, feeling a bit uneasy. If they drove back to the villa, it would only be a little past eleven when they arrived. Somehow, the idea of staying in a hotel together with Jiang Zi felt a bit strange.
Jiang Zi’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “So, Little Tang Yuan does know it wouldn’t be that late if we went back.”
There was a subtle hint of reproach in her tone.
Clearly, they had time to return, yet Tang Yuan had chosen to stay at a hotel.
Tang Yuan suddenly felt guilty, her confidence faltering. “It’s just… well, driving that late isn’t exactly safe.”
Then, a flash of inspiration hit her, and she poked Jiang Zi’s waist playfully. “Speaking of which, what about you? Why did you come here anyway?”
