Chapter 10: The Beast Within
One night, as the moon cast a pale light through the small window, Elias's struggle reached a breaking point. He thrashed on the cot, his body wracked with convulsions as the hunger tore at him. "… I need… I need blood," he growled, his voice barely human.
Eva's heart pounded with fear, but she refused to abandon him. "Elias, you're stronger than this."
Magnus stepped in, his expression grim. "Eva, you need to leave the shed. It's not safe for you here right now."
Eva hesitated, her eyes locked on Elias. "I can't leave him, Magnus. He needs me."
Magnus's voice was firm. "You're putting yourself in danger. Elias wouldn't want that, trust me Eva. I'll take care of him."
With a heavy heart, Eva stepped outside, her eyes never leaving the door. She could hear Elias's growls and Magnus's calming words, but the fear and helplessness gnawed at her.
Inside, Magnus did his best to calm Elias, using every technique he knew to help him regain control. "Elias, focus on my voice. Remember who you are."
Elias's eyes flickered with recognition, but the bloodlust was too strong. "Magnus… I can't… it's too much," he growled, his body trembling with the effort to resist.
Magnus placed a hand on Elias's shoulder, his voice steady and reassuring. "You can do this, Elias. You've faced worse, you're not alone in this fight."
But this time, the bloodlust was too powerful. With a sudden surge of strength, Elias pushed Magnus away, his eyes blazing with hunger. "… I need her… I need her blood," he snarled, his voice filled with desperation.
Magnus stumbled back, his eyes wide with shock. "Elias, no! You have to fight it!"
But Elias was beyond reason. He burst through the door of the shed, his senses honing in on Eva's scent. "Bunny… where are you, little bunny?" he called out, his voice a haunting mix of love and hunger.
Eva, who had been pacing outside, froze at the sound of his voice. Panic surged through her as she realized Elias was no longer in control. She turned and ran into the forest, her heart pounding with fear.
"Bunny… come back to me," Elias called, his voice echoing through the trees. He chased after her, his movements swift and predatory.
Eva's breath came in ragged gasps as she ran, the darkness of the forest closing in around her. She could hear Elias's footsteps behind her, growing closer with each passing moment. "Elias, please… don't do this," she cried, her voice filled with desperation.
But Elias was relentless, driven by the primal hunger that consumed him. "Bunny… I need you," he growled, his voice filled with a terrifying intensity.
Eva stumbled over a root, her heart racing as she scrambled to her feet. She could feel Elias closing in, his presence a dark shadow that loomed over her. "Elias, please… fight it," she begged, tears streaming down her face.
But Elias was beyond reason, his bloodlust too strong to resist. "… I'm coming for you little bunny" he called, his voice a chilling promise.
As Eva ran deeper into the forest, she knew she had to find a way to reach Elias's true self. She couldn't let the darkness win. "Elias, please, come back to me," she cried, her voice filled with a desperate hope.
The chase continued, the forest a maze of shadows and danger. Eva's heart pounded with fear, but she refused to give up. She had to save Elias, no matter the cost.
Finally, exhausted and cornered, Eva stumbled into a small clearing. She turned to face Elias, her heart breaking at the sight of him. "Elias, please… remember who you are," she pleaded, her voice trembling.
Elias lunged at her, his fangs bared, ready to sink into her neck. But as he drew closer, his eyes caught the glint of the locket around her neck. The sight of it triggered a flood of memories, and for a brief moment, his true self broke through the bloodlust.
"… the locket…," he whispered, his voice filled with pain and confusion. He hesitated, his fangs mere inches from her skin.
Eva's eyes widened with hope and fear. "It's me. Please, come back."
But it was too late. The fear in Eva's eyes was unmistakable, and the realization of what he had almost done shattered Elias. He stumbled back, his eyes filled with anguish. "Eva… I'm so sorry…," he whispered, his voice breaking.
Eva's heart ached with a mix of love and fear. She took a step back, her voice trembling. "Elias… I… I can't…," her voice choked with emotion.
Elias fell to his knees, his hands clutching his head as he fought against the darkness within. "Eva… please… don't be afraid…," he begged, his voice filled with desperation.
But the damage was done. Eva's fear was too strong, and the bond they shared was strained to its breaking point. She turned and ran, tears streaming down her face, leaving Elias alone in the clearing, consumed by his guilt and sorrow.
Ever since that day every time Elias tried to speak, Eva would shake uncontrollably, her fear palpable. "Eva, please… I'm still me," he would say, his voice trembling with emotion.
But Eva couldn't hide her fear. "Elias," she would cry, her body trembling. "I can't… I can't be near you."
The words cut Elias deeply, each rejection a dagger to his heart. He tried to reach out to her, but every attempt only made her fear grow stronger. "Eva, I love you. I would never hurt you," he pleaded, his voice breaking.
But Eva's fear was too great. "I can never be with a monster like you," she finally said, her voice filled with anguish and finality.
The words hung in the air, heavy and final. Elias felt as if the ground had been ripped out from under him. He stared at Eva, his heart shattering into a million pieces. "Eva, please… don't say that," he whispered, his voice barely audible.
Eva's body trembled, her eyes wide with fear. "I can't, Elias. You're… you're a monster," she said, her voice breaking with each word.
Elias's heart ached with a pain he had never known. "Eva, I'm still me. I'm still the man who loves you more than anything," he pleaded, his voice filled with desperation.
But Eva shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "No, Elias. You're not the same. I saw what you almost did. I can't… I can't be with you," she cried, her voice filled with anguish.
Elias fell to his knees, his hands clutching his head.' "Eva… please… …," he begged, his voice filled with desperation.
Eva took another step back, her body shaking uncontrollably. "I'm sorry, Elias. I can't do this. I can't be with you," she said, her voice barely more than a whisper.
The words cut through Elias like a knife, each one a dagger to his heart. He looked up at her, his eyes filled with pain and sorrow. "Eva, please… don't leave me," he whispered, his voice breaking.
Elias watched her go, his heart breaking with every step she took. He wanted to call out to her, to beg her to come back, but the words wouldn't come. He was left alone, the weight of his actions crushing him.
Magnus found Elias in the clearing, his eyes filled with concern. "Elias, what happened?" he asked, his voice gentle.
Elias looked up at him, his eyes hollow and filled with pain. "She's gone, Magnus. She's afraid of me. She called me a monster," he whispered, his voice filled with despair.
Magnus placed a hand on Elias's shoulder, his expression sympathetic. "Elias, you need to give her time. She's scared, but she still loves you. You need to fight this darkness and prove to her that you're still the man she loves."
Elias shook his head, his heart heavy with guilt. "I don't know if I can, Magnus. I don't know if I'm strong enough."
Magnus's grip tightened on his shoulder. "You are strong enough, Elias. You've faced worse and come out the other side. You can do this. For Eva, for yourself, you need to fight."
Elias looked up at Magnus, his eyes filled with determination. "I will fight, Magnus. I will prove to Eva that I'm still the man she loves.''
Magnus nodded, his expression resolute. "We'll get through this together, Elias. You're not alone in this fight."
As the dawn broke, casting a soft light over the forest, Elias stood up, his resolve strengthened. He would fight the darkness within him, no matter the cost. He would prove to Eva that he was still the man she loved. And he would do whatever it took to win her back.
