Chapter 66
“Please tell me now, Princess. Who exactly is His Highness?” Leia, who had stepped out of the noisy banquet hall to smoke in a quiet corner, extinguished her cigarette at Belfry’s question.
“Shouldn’t you be resting, considering your condition?”
Belfry blushed, reminded of his earlier embarrassment.
“How are you feeling?”
“It wasn’t serious. There’s just been a lot on my mind that I need to focus on…” Despite Belfry’s robust constitution, physicians couldn’t explain why he had collapsed. They merely attributed it to stress and assured him that the prince’s response to the situation hadn’t been inappropriate.
“Try not to carry too much weight on your shoulders, Belfry Hendrick.” Leia gently patted his shoulder. “If you’re worried about me, ease my confusion by answering one simple question: Just who is the prince? There’s so much I don’t understand from start to finish.”
During his Lord’s joyous engagement ceremony, his betrothed unexpectedly climbed on top of him. To make matters more confusing, he kept recalling Carl Lindbergh’s face of relief when he woke up as he pressed against Belfry’s chest.
Belfry Hendrick, the epitome of masculinity, swore that he had never been romantically interested in another man before. In fact, he’d never really been attracted to anyone, but if he were to imagine an ideal partner, they would always be a woman with soft hair and smooth skin who smelled divine. Yet now, all he could think about was the scent and sight of Carl Lindbergh calling out his name firmly amidst sweat.
It felt utterly disloyal, and Belfry desperately wanted to shake these thoughts from his head. The prince was already engaged to his lord and destined to become empress.
As if sensing Belfry’s conflicted thoughts, Leia gently probed him about what specifically he wanted to know.
Belfry promptly replied, “Is it true that the Prince has amnesia?”
Letting out a small sigh, Leia gestured for Belfry to come closer. As Belfry leaned in, she whispered right into his ear:
“You already knew that Carl had suffered a fall from his horse.”
“Yes, and afterward, both his pheromone scent and personality changed.”
Having tasted the sweetness of first love, Adrian Heineken no longer cared about any potential issues. However, Belfry was different; he couldn’t forget either the initial suspicions held by the Crown Prince, or the specific changes observed in the prince’s behavior.
“Heineken has the best intelligence-gathering capabilities on this continent. We have not received any reports of the prince receiving formal education elsewhere. Moreover, where did he hear such tales about that ‘affectionate species’? Is there a possibility that the prince heard such stories at the age of twenty?”
Belfry was certain when Carl Lindbergh mentioned to Glenn, “A species that shares their limited resources with all is considered affectionate and tends to thrive.” It seemed like Carl might be Lindbergh’s secret weapon, carefully honed over time. And for him to present something so appealing to Emperor Glenn…
It was natural for a dominant Alpha in his prime at twenty-one to be captivated by a similarly strong Omega without much fanfare. However, Belfry hadn’t anticipated that just a few words from Carl could secure the emperor’s unwavering support.
And that’s not all! Despite numerous attempts by others, no one had been able to decipher the secrets of complex magic formulas until he cracked them. Thanks to this breakthrough, Heineken’s magic stone processing technology would soar, ultimately enhancing their national power.
Belfry frowned deeply. An Omega with both intellect and beauty—a perfect match for the emperor. Yet he had spent twenty years languishing like a wastrel in Lindbergh, a barren land? Unless he intentionally hid himself there, it was hard to fathom why such a person would choose to live under those conditions.
“It’s impossible for new memories unrelated to the location where amnesia occurred to suddenly surface. Just who is the prince truly?”
Belfry momentarily swayed, perhaps due to speaking too much. Leia perceived him as desperately grasping at straws to find fault with Carl.
His recent attitude was markedly different from his earlier stance, where he had said that it would be fine as long as they received magic stones from Mochu Mountain, and he would not bring harm to the Heineken Empire.
A cool breeze brushed against their cheeks, and Leia tightened her shawl around herself. Belfry’s purple eyes still appeared troubled, while the cold weather tinted his lips with a similar violet hue.
“Unfortunately, Belfry, I cannot provide you with the answer you seek.”
“What do you mean, Princess?”
“Carl indeed lost his memories, but for half a year, he spent time reading every book in the Lindbergh library trying to recover them. The library houses a vast collection of knowledge, ranging from various fields since the Lindwyer era to official documents that starkly reveal Lindbergh’s current issues.”
Belfry’s eyes widened significantly.
“T-Then… Are you saying that the prince acquired all this knowledge within just half a year?”
Smiling wryly, Leia gently nudged Belfry forward. It wouldn’t be right to keep exposing the man who had just collapsed to the cold wind—especially since she needed to save his younger brother’s engagement ceremony from disaster…
“It’s not surprising Carl learned so much in such a short time. He has excellent natural abilities, especially up here.” She tapped her head. “How do you think I grew up with a mute maid?”
Belfry wisely kept quiet, knowing well how the princess spent her childhood.
“He always possessed the aptitude to excel at anything he set his mind to. Unfortunately, Chancellor Kitchener manipulated our parents into choosing misguided parenting methods, which led to his wasted potential.”
“…I must admit, I underestimated Prince Carl.”
Belfry bowed his head, expressing both regret and admiration as he murmured, “I dare say…” Suddenly, the prince’s face popped into his mind, causing his cheeks to flush. He also recalled the scent that had brushed past his nose. Belfry unconsciously rubbed it, eliciting a soft tut from Leia.
Well, well—Carl Lindbergh seemed to have bewitched another innocent soul. With looks rivaling Adrian Heineken’s, along with impeccable lineage and education, Belfry was quite the catch. It was fortunate that Belfry was loyal and Carl was too distracted to notice.
As they entered the banquet hall together, Leia narrowed her eyes, alternating between observing the emperor closely guarding the empress above them and Grand Duke Balvenie keeping watch over Duke Hendrick in the corner.
Adrian Heineken also carried the blood of this noble family. Although he might appear relatively harmless due to his young age, one mustn’t be deceived by appearances.
Whether they were a real rival or mistakenly seen as one, Adrian would increasingly find it difficult to tolerate anyone closer to Carl than himself, and this would only worsen after the engagement. With Lindbergh’s situation and other political matters already causing enough stress, Leia hoped there wouldn’t be any more complications.
“It’s spilled milk now anyway.” Belfry heard her mutter under her breath and asked, “Pardon?”
“Oh, nothing. I wonder how the main characters of today’s event are doing.”
“Oh…” Belfry fervently wished that the prince wasn’t in trouble. While Adrian seemed sensible enough not to harm Carl, if the Alpha’s primal instincts clouded his human rationality, things could get messy. Even if Carl’s action in saving Belfry could be overlooked, he might end up licking the skin Carl had touched on another.
Belfry’s gaze instinctively turned toward the door.
