Chapter 82: The Battle of Maubeugemour, Part 4
His senses sharpened. Even without seeing it, he knew each blow was a fatal attack. Apsu was unleashing a torrent of chains, each with the intent to kill.
It was a strange ability, even for a Paramecia Devil Fruit user. He had never seen anything like it – transforming existing matter into another substance. It was a power he would need to be wary of.
To survive, he had to focus more than ever, read his emotions, and accurately sense his target. One misstep, and he would be skewered in the next second.
Apsu had that power.
"Are you still alive? How irritating..."
Apsu deflected Junshi's spear with his Haki-reinforced arm, then redirected the tsunami of chains that had been surging behind him towards Dragon.
Dragon twisted his body, narrowly avoiding the attack, and retreated, momentarily breaking off his assault. Apsu pursued relentlessly.
One blow, two blows, their fists collided. Apsu entangled Dragon's legs with chains, immobilizing him, then thrust a piercing hand towards his heart.
"Guh–!!"
Just as Dragon broke into a cold sweat, sensing imminent danger – a blade flashed from the side, halting Apsu's attack.
"I won't let you kill her comrades."
"Silvers Rayleigh… Why are you interfering?!"
"Because this time, we're on Kanata's side."
The blond man with a carefree demeanor – "Dark King" Silvers Rayleigh.
He stepped in front of Dragon protectively, brandishing his sword at Apsu. They clashed weapons, both imbued with Armament Haki, scattering shockwaves. Dragon, entangled, couldn't move, despite being so close to the impact.
No matter how strong Rayleigh was, Apsu was also a top executive of the Golden Lion Pirates. His Haki-clad chains weren't easily broken.
Thus.
"Sorry, but I'm going to have to get a bit rough."
With a resounding slash, Rayleigh cut the ship.
The source of the chains was the ship itself. If the transformed chains couldn't be severed, then the solution was to collapse the foundation. Rayleigh sliced through the vessel without hesitation. After all, it belonged to the Golden Lion Pirates. He had no reason to hold back.
Dragon, freed from the loosened chains, immediately distanced himself from Apsu.
"Thanks. But why are you here?"
"Well, let's just say I have a bit of a connection with Kanata. A series of coincidences brought me here."
He kept his eyes on Apsu, but quickly confirmed what was bothering him. "That girl has connections everywhere…" he thought, half in exasperation. This time, that connection had saved them. It was impossible to know what would change their fate.
The ship, slowly sinking from Rayleigh's slash, continued to tilt, but the three of them deftly maintained their balance, dodging Apsu's attacks.
"We should retreat for now. There's no point in fighting Shiki's fleet head-on."
"But if we leave him unchecked, he'll be a danger to the ship."
"That's where your skills come in."
They couldn't ignore the situation. They needed to strengthen their defenses.
Thanks to the Roger Pirates' intervention, Lucien was starting to get serious. In the distance, the battle between Shiki, Roger, and Kanata had also intensified. If they stayed here, they would inevitably be caught in the crossfire.
Even if they distanced themselves, it wouldn't be enough to ensure their safety if those three were fighting seriously.
"We can't hold Roger back either. For now, I think we should retreat quietly–"
"–Do you think you can escape?"
Apsu unleashed a wave of chains, aiming to entangle them.
Rayleigh deftly deflected the chains with his sword, while Dragon and Junshi leaped from the sinking ship.
Their objective was to inflict damage on the Golden Lion Pirates while minimizing casualties. In that sense, they had already achieved their goal.
Pursuing it further would only lead to unnecessary sacrifices.
"We'll return to the ship first. What about you?"
"I'll buy you some time. You should focus on rescuing the crew from the burning ship."
Despite facing Apsu, Rayleigh remained calm. Having secured their escape, he stayed behind to buy them time.
Apsu, irritated by his nonchalance, pierced the sinking ship with chains, disrupting Rayleigh's footing and forcing him to retreat. Rayleigh was a powerful fighter, known as Roger's right-hand man, but even he wasn't significantly stronger than Apsu.
It was a difficult battle, but Rayleigh's duty was to support Roger's decisions. Even if he was exasperated by that unpredictable captain's actions, he wouldn't complain.
***
Lelampargo's astonishing resilience wore Zen down. He gratefully accepted the assistance of Scopper Gaban, who had come to help.
Every member of the Roger Pirates was a renowned fighter. They weren't a crew that solely relied on Roger and Rayleigh.
Gaban, having arrived, clashed head-on with Lelampargo.
"As expected of the Roger Pirates. You're not to be underestimated."
Zen deflected Lelampargo's right-handed halberd strike, while Gaban parried the left-handed attack with his two axes.
A moment later – a barrage of arrows, fired like a bombardment, sent Lelampargo flying.
"Whoa, brutal support… but appreciated."
"Heehin, her archery skills are top-notch. Leave the support to her. Let's retreat for now."
Dragon and Junshi were already heading back to the ship. Zen decided to join them and strengthen their defenses.
Many of the Golden Lion Pirates' ships had already sunk. Escaping now wouldn't be difficult. Prolonging the battle until one side was annihilated would only disadvantage Kanata and her crew.
Zen, soaring through the air, carried Gaban on his back. As they retreated, he sliced through a nearby ship, sinking it. Lelampargo was a Devil Fruit user. It was best to increase the chances of him falling into the sea and eliminate any potential footholds along their escape route.
"Kanata's crew is an interesting bunch."
"Really? Well, she doesn't care about species or appearances."
Giants, Minks, and even Longarms – they had all been part of her crew. Despite their different cultures and lifestyles, as long as they could communicate, there wouldn't be any major problems. Of course, troublemakers were promptly disciplined…
Zen, carrying Gaban, reached the Sombrero. As Lelampargo pursued them, Gloriosa intercepted him with a barrage of arrows.
"We're back! How's the situation?"
"Awful! We've sent the injured to the infirmary, but the enemy's attacks have intensified!"
George reported grimly, deflecting a cannonball with his sword.
The enemy's barrage had intensified, despite their dwindling numbers. Their flagship was bearing the brunt of it. The subordinate ships were in even worse shape.
They had dedicated all their forces to defense, but it was only a matter of time before another ship sank.
"–They're coming again!"
"Damn it, David! Be the wall!"
"Aye aye, sir!"
David leaped from the ship, transforming into a wall of flesh and detonating his entire body.
A series of explosions erupted, sending shockwaves across the sea, but they could handle this much. After all, David, as a Bomb Bomb Fruit user, was immune to explosions. It was a simple but effective tactic.
Gaban, staring at the spectacle with an astonished expression, watched as Dragon and Junshi returned to the ship.
"What happened to Rayleigh? I thought he went to your side."
"He said he was going to buy us time to escape."
"I see. Well, with his strength, there's no need to worry."
They trusted him implicitly. He was that capable.
Their priority now was to escape from the Golden Lion Pirates.
"It's dangerous to approach Roger and Shiki while they're fighting seriously. We need to recover them and escape somehow…"
"The problem is how to deal with Shiki if he pursues us."
"Kanata's quite fired up right now. I doubt she'll listen if we tell her to retreat."
She was usually calm and collected, but once she lost her temper, there was no telling what she might do.
She wasn't reckless. She understood the bigger picture, but… she had a history of charging into danger, even risking her life to protect her comrades. And now, she was facing Shiki, the "Flying Pirate".
It wouldn't be surprising if she stayed behind to fight, even if it meant sacrificing herself to ensure their escape.
"Roger wouldn't be so reckless… or maybe he would…"
He was also the type to charge headfirst into danger without thinking. That was what made him so troublesome. There was no choice but to leave it to fate.
"If they fight one-on-one, Roger won't lose, but it all depends on how long Kanata can hold out."
"…Do you even think those two can coordinate their attacks?"
Everyone fell silent.
Both Roger and Kanata were exceptionally strong. So strong that they rarely had to cooperate with others. Kanata occasionally fought alongside her crew members, but there was no way she could suddenly start coordinating her actions with Roger.
"…This could be a serious problem," Gaban said, breaking the silence with a worried expression.
***
"Sink them, Roger!!"
"Wahahaha!! Do you think you can defeat me with that?!"
Shiki and Roger clashed, their Haki-clad weapons colliding.
The ice platform beneath them cracked from the impact, and Roger leaped from one floating shard to another, narrowly avoiding falling into the sea.
Shiki, manipulating the sea with his ability, sent a pack of lions lunging at Roger.
"Kanata! I need your help!"
"Treating me like your personal assistant…!"
Kanata froze the lions with a wave of her hand.
Roger, cleaving through the frozen statues with a single swing of his sword, sprinted across the ice platform Kanata had conjured.
This pattern had repeated several times. Roger's movements were restricted on the unstable sea. Even with his strength, he couldn't utilize it effectively in this environment.
"Damn it, this is annoying! Can't you do something about this?!'
"Don't be ridiculous. I'm fighting him in the air to compensate for that."
"If we could just drag him down here…"
"Are you saying you're stronger on land?! Come on!"
Shiki attacked with a flurry of sword strikes, which Kanata intercepted, forcing him into a clash of blades.
Their weapons didn't touch. The Armament Haki surrounding them clashed, sending shockwaves across the sea. Shiki, undeniably, was one of the strongest individuals in the world.
But Kanata wasn't backing down either.
She had layered multiple levels of Armament Haki, turning it a deep blue-violet. The enhanced Haki prevented her from being overpowered by Shiki's raw strength.
"Clever trick! But let's see how long you can keep that up!!"
"I won't be brought down so easily. After all, I came here to take your head…!"
She was used to being pursued, but this situation couldn't continue forever. Kanata had too many enemies for one thing. If you included potential threats, the list was practically endless.
Shiki and Linlin were after her because of her mother. The Marines were after her because of the Celestial Dragon incident. And most likely, Whitebeard would eventually consider her an enemy due to her connection to Rocks.
Some of the most powerful individuals in the world were relentlessly hunting her down. If she didn't eliminate as many as possible, she'd be the one in trouble.
And it was all Rocks' fault.
...Well, the Celestial Dragon incident was her own doing, she had to admit.
"I'll take your head here. And Linlin's. And eventually, Whitebeard's."
"Oh? Getting cocky, are we? Linlin aside, Whitebeard is strong. Strong enough to fight me on equal footing!"
They broke off their clash of blades, Shiki stepping back and unleashing a series of sword strikes.
Kanata had seen these techniques before. She was familiar enough with them to mimic them.
She calmly deflected the attacks, her expression unchanging, waiting for her chance.
"You'll be my enemy eventually. All of you seem to hate that woman."
"Jihahahaha! You're damn right! If they hate her, of course they'll come after you!"
"And that's why I'll kill you all – 'God Slayer'."
She layered her Haki and Devil Fruit power onto her weapon. The air around her black spear grew colder. The blade, swung sideways, instantly chilled the air, creating diamond dust.
Octavia's version of this attack was imbued with lightning, but Kanata's was clad in freezing cold.
Absolute Zero – a slash that froze anything it touched.
An unavoidable attack.
"–?!"
Diamond dust shimmered in the air.
The slash arced towards Shiki's neck. He countered by reinforcing his blades with Haki, blocking Kanata's spear. The weapons clashed with a screech of metal, and an intense cold surged from the point of contact, instantly freezing Shiki's body.
Seizing her chance, Kanata thrust her spear towards Shiki's frozen neck, aiming from a different angle.
"–!!"
Shiki forced his frozen body to move by channeling Haki from within. He managed to intercept Kanata's spear with both his swords.
"You…! That technique… it's Octavia's…!"
"It's possible to mimic a technique once you've seen it. No one will ever understand, though."
She was the same size as her mother, and they shared the same blood. If her mother could do it, there was no reason Kanata couldn't.
Even for Kanata, this was a technique that had been impossible to use without significant training. But even so, it was powerful enough to put Shiki on the defensive.
Taking it head-on would take a toll on his stamina – and of course, Roger wouldn't miss this opportunity.
"Don't forget about me!!"
"Roger!!"
Shiki parried Kanata's spear, then spun to face Roger, clashing weapons. However, this left him open to Kanata's attack.
"Damn–"
"–I'll take that head."
A flash of her blade, too fast for the eye to follow.
Realizing he wouldn't be able to block in time, Shiki shifted his body slightly and reinforced himself with Armament Haki, creating armor.
Haki, when imbued, could grant a hardness that wouldn't yield even to steel – but that only worked against weaker opponents.
An adversary of equal or greater strength could pierce through his Haki.
Kanata's attack shattered Shiki's defenses. The slash cut deep into his forehead.
"–Guh… Damn…! "
Blood flowed from the diagonal wound. Shiki retreated, rage contorting his face. Not once, but twice now, he had been caught off guard. The humiliation fueled his fury.
Even if it was a two-on-one fight, the word "cowardice" had no place in a pirate's vocabulary. There was only the harsh truth that he had been too weak to defeat them.
Kanata and Roger stood side-by-side, glaring at Shiki, who had created some distance.
"If we keep pushing, we might be able to take his head."
"No, I think that's impossible. We might be fine, but they're not."
Roger jerked his thumb towards their ships. "They're in a dangerous situation, and a cornered Golden Lion is a fearsome opponent."
It was pointless taking Shiki's head if their comrades were annihilated in the process.
Kanata, still somewhat rational despite the situation, seemed to prioritize protecting her crew even over this chance to defeat Shiki.
"…I'll leave you to handle him. I'll create a path back to the ships."
"Right, leave it to me!"
Kanata froze the sea, creating a path of ice towards their vessels.
Shiki would surely pursue. She had managed to injure him, but it wouldn't be enough to defeat him. He wouldn't fall so easily.
Entrusting their rear to Roger, Kanata created a path while hurrying back to her ship.
"Did you think you could escape?!"
Shiki, enraged, soared through the air, summoning a massive tsunami that threatened to engulf his own fleet. However, dealing with that was simple.
"Roger, it's going to get cold. Reinforce yourself with Haki."
"Hmm? Right, got it!"
Kanata warned Roger, then unleashed her ability. With a wave of her hand, she froze Shiki's tsunami in an instant. Raising her other hand to the sky, she gathered clouds and unleashed a blizzard.
Crimson Lotus – snowflakes that froze anything they touched, be it flesh or wood.
"Whoa, that's incredible!"
"Don't touch it! This power is indiscriminate. You'll freeze too."
"What the hell are you doing?!"
Kanata scolded Roger, who had been about to touch the falling snow in surprise.
It seemed he hadn't expected her to unleash a power that would freeze friend and foe alike just to stop Shiki.
Roger, exhaling a cloud of white breath, ran behind Kanata, occasionally glancing back to ensure Shiki wasn't planning another attack.
It seemed Shiki was annoyed by the blizzard, his movements growing sluggish.
"So, where are we going?"
"Just pick a random island. Any place far enough to lose him. Do you know any good islands that would be suitable for shaking off pursuit?"
"…Well, if we're looking for an uninhabited island, the only place with an Eternal Pose is Hachinosu."
"Right, let's go there."
Kanata and Roger decided on their destination while dodging chunks of ice that Shiki was lifting and hurling at them with his ability.
If it was just Shiki pursuing them, they could handle it. They just needed to shake off his fleet.
"Head back to the ship. I'll hold them off."
"Right, we'll follow you."
Kanata created a path of ice leading to the Oro Jackson, then had to return to the Sombrero to issue instructions for their next move.
This time, Kuro was in charge of steering the ship. She instructed him, Scotch, and George to head to Hachinosu using the Eternal Pose.
Kanata disembarked, heading to delay the enemy fleet. She froze a wide area of the sea, preventing the ships from moving. As she did this, she spotted Rayleigh fighting on a nearby ship.
He was clashing with one of the enemy executives. She'd have to recover him as well, Kanata decided, and altered her course.
"Rayleigh, do you need help?"
"Kanata! What about Shiki?"
"He's pursuing us. It's better to escape sooner rather than later."
"I won't let you escape—how many times do I have to say it?"
The ship they were standing on began to transform, chains erupting from the deck. Apsu aimed them at Kanata, intending to impale her.
"A Paramecia Devil Fruit… But it's a strange ability."
Paramecia Devil Fruits usually transformed the user or allowed them to create things from their own bodies. But Apsu's ability was to transform existing matter into a different substance. Was such a power even possible?
Pushing aside her doubts for now, Kanata charged towards Apsu, her spear at the ready.
Apsu unleashed his chains, aiming to impale Kanata, but she didn't flinch. Using her momentum, she reinforced her spear with Haki and slammed it into Apsu.
"–Begone."
Her spear, swung sideways, sent Apsu flying towards another ship in the distance.
She pulled out the chains embedded in her body. The wounds they had created froze over instantly, healing themselves. She had dodged the attack with her fluid Logia form, so even though it looked like she had been impaled, there was no actual damage.
"We'll move while we have the chance. Come on."
"R-Right… I can't believe he was a top executive of the Golden Lion Pirates… You've changed, Kanata."
Apsu hadn't been careless. Kanata's strength had simply grown to an unbelievable level since their last encounter.
"I wonder if she's actually stronger than me now…" Rayleigh thought with a sigh, but Kanata, oblivious, had already leaped onto the frozen sea.
For now, she decided to bring Rayleigh back to the Sombrero. She could always use him and Gaban to help fend off cannon fire.
"After them!! Why can't you catch a few measly ships?!"
Lucien and the Golden Lion Pirates desperately pursued, but Kanata's efforts to slow them down had taken their toll.
Shiki tried to lift their ships with his ability and fly them through the air, but in this volatile sea, where the weather shifted constantly, even he couldn't control such a large fleet.
"This ends here. But I'll sink every last one of your ships next time, so don't forget this!"
"Kanata!!"
Shiki raged at Kanata, who simply laughed in response.
– And so, the battle that would later be known as "The Battle of Maubeugemour" came to an end.
***
The Witch's Crew had lost a single ship.
The Golden Lion Pirates, on the other hand, had lost dozens. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say their fleet was in ruins. Even the Marines, who had been observing from a safe distance, were stunned by the outcome.
The world would soon be in an uproar after learning that Roger Pirates, notorious troublemakers, had formed an alliance with the rising star known as the "Dragon Slayer Witch". The Marines and the World Government would be forced to reevaluate their strategies, scrambling to find a way to deal with this unexpected turn of events.
