Book 12: Chapter 82
Volume 12 Chapter 82 : Deserted City
Margado, once a thriving agricultural city where spirits lived and worked, was now in chaotic ruins. There were frozen dark brown blood clots everywhere, but no trace of spirits or monsters could be seen.
Upon witnessing the scene, the spirits of Delza could not help but gasp. They were all grateful that Lin Xiang had returned, otherwise Delza would surely have met the same fate as Margado.
"We arrived too late," Wind Fury shook his head, a look of disappointment on his face.
"It was expected. Margado is an agricultural city with no walls for protection, and the soldiers are not strong. If there's a treacherous lord, then it would be easy for Margado to be breached," Reggie surveyed the area. Houses were destroyed, crops were corroded, and Margado was finished.
"Should we search the city? Perhaps there are survivors?" Lin Xiang asked. He thought that in an agricultural city like that, there might be cellars or similar places used to store crops. The spirits might be hiding inside.
"Yes, indeed. We cannot afford to overlook any hope."
The search yielded results similar to what Lin Xiang had in mind. A small number of spirits were hiding in cellars, and most of them were children. It seemed that after the invasion of the demonic insects, their parents hurriedly hid them in the cellars and then went out to divert the creatures, allowing them to escape unscathed.
When they were found, they were all huddled together, trembling incessantly. Their eyes were swollen from crying, tears no longer flowed.
Seeing the soldiers, their expressions were indifferent, as if their spirits had retreated to another world, too afraid to come out. They did not respond when spoken to. It seemed they had experienced unforgettable memories.
"We found 1350 children and 232 older spirits. The older spirits said the monsters were terrifying, and the invasion happened in an instant. They were lucky to hide in the cellar, avoiding capture by the creatures. They said the time they spent hiding in the cellar felt like an eternity, because outside, the screams of the spirits never stopped. It wasn't until midnight that the sounds finally ceased, but they still didn't dare to come out until now," a soldier reported to Wind Fury.
"Well, you've worked hard. Take some men and escort them to Selga. The children are probably terrified," Wind Fury instructed.
"Understood." The soldier saluted Wind Fury and hurried off to make arrangements.
"Now, what should we do? Should we continue forward?" Wind Fury looked at Yalide.
"Brat, what do you think?" Yalide looked at Lin Xiang again.
"Me? Uh, I'm not sure." Lin Xiang dared not make any decisions. After all, there were tens of thousands of spirits here. If he said to go, the spirits would follow suit.
"What do you mean you're not sure? Speak your mind."
"I How should I put it?" Lin Xiang did not really understand those strategic matters. If it came to fighting, the straightforward kind, he could deal with it.
"Speak up, what do you think?" Yalide insisted on letting Lin Xiang make a decision, making Wind Fury a little impatient.
It was related to the future of the spirits. How could they let a human boy make the decision? However, since Yalide said so, Wind Fury had no choice but to remain silent.
Reggie, on the other hand, had high hopes for Lin Xiang, while Paulie Water also looked at Lin Xiang with a hint of expectation.
After all, in a sense, they were all in-laws.
Of course, Wind Fury had no idea that his precious daughter had already formed a contract with Lin Xiang. Otherwise, he would have immediately conjured up a whirlwind and given Lin Xiang a whirl.
Wind Chimes stood beside Lin Xiang, constantly recording what was happening. That disaster was the largest in the history of Spirit Country. If recorded, it would certainly become a history book, leaving a legacy for generations to come.
Of course, Wind Chimes was not interested in leaving a lasting legacy. She just hoped to record Lin Xiang's words and deeds to have a better understanding of humans.
"I think searching other cities is pointless," Lin Xiang said, but before he could continue, Wind Fury questioned, "Pointless? You think it's pointless? Think about Selga. If we hadn't arrived in time, what would it be like now?"
"Uh, Uncle Wind Fury, don't be agitated. Actually, I think the top priority should be to go to the demon abyss and stop the sacrifice. If the sacrifice succeeds"
"So you're willing to abandon the other spirits? Look at those children. If we hadn't come in time, staying in the cellar for a while longer would have surely caused them great harm. Although they have already suffered considerable damage, there is still time to remedy it."
"That's true, as Uncle Wind Fury said. We are now in the central position of Spirit Country, right? From north to south, Mantillu, Catudor, Margado, Selga, Delza. The remaining are Mantillu and Catudor. If we were to go there, it would probably take another day. A lot of things can happen in one day. Instead, we can split into smaller teams, send them to search the other two cities, and have the main force go to the demon abyss to rescue the captured spirits. This way, we can effectively save time."
"Well but if we split up, there will be dangers. I understand this very well." In the previous mission to rescue the spirits with Dusk Water, it was due to the team being separated that allowed Dusk Water to take advantage of the situation, causing a large number of guards to be injured or killed.
"Let the dragons accompany them. I believe that ordinary demon soldiers can be dealt with by the dragons."
"Good! Let's go with this decision then," Wind Fury's impression of Lin Xiang improved.
Just as they were about to split up into teams, five unexpected guests appeared.
"Myron, Carey, Jason, Mahler, Gobi," Remi recognized the five spirits in front of him at once.
The one with green hair was called Myron, the one with gray hair was Carey, the one with black hair was Jason, while the two red-haired brothers were Mahler and Gobi.
Among them, Myron and Carey did not have a very good relationship with Remi. In the last trip when Lin Xiang went to Deli Temple, they did some things that were not very favorable to Remi. As for Jason, he was an annoying flatterer. As for the Flame Brothers, Mahler and Gobi, their personalities were relatively straightforward, and their relationship with Remi was average.
"Yo! Isn't this Remi? The former imperial warrior Remi, what are you up to now? It's been a long time since I heard from you," Myron greeted Remi in a friendly manner.
"I'm doing fine, just fine. I've been traveling in the human world for a while," Remi could not be bothered to say much to them, "Why are you here?"
"We're here by order of the Spirit King to investigate the movements of the demonic creatures and lead the survivors to a safe place," Jason said, then automatically began to flatter Reggie, Wind Fury, and the others.
"Okay, so you've already been to Catudor?"
"Yes, Catudor is now a deserted city."
"And we can't find any traces of the spirits at all."
Mahler and Gobi, the two brothers, chimed in.
