Chapter 84
“Mo Mo, what does your boyfriend actually look like?” Wei Zhuowei knew his question didn’t really have any meaning, but he couldn’t help asking.
This wasn’t the first time he’d asked Lin Mo about what his boyfriend looked like.
He felt like he was the cat killed by curiosity.
When Lin Mo had just returned to the dorm, Wei Zhuowei had been a bit worried that he might have fallen into the trap of a so-called “sugar daddy”—someone wealthy, who knows how to play the game and deceive college students, trapping them in a sweet but dangerous situation, even leading them step by step into a deeper mess.
But when he subtly asked Lin Mo about his boyfriend’s age, wondering if he might be more mature and capable of taking care of him, Lin Mo said his boyfriend wasn’t very old.
“He’s younger than me,” Lin Mo said, his tone a bit hesitant. “…Honestly, I was a bit shocked when I first saw him.”
“Then he told me he already turned eighteen last summer, that it’s a legal relationship, and even laughed, saying I didn’t have to worry.”
Worry about what? Of course, it was about worrying that it might be a case of an older man preying on a younger one.
Although Li Heng didn’t speak up, he instinctively felt curious and subconsciously tilted his head to look at him.
“He’s… really cute and handsome,” Lin Mo said, his eyes darting around. “…You’ll find out tonight.”
Although he said that, he wasn’t entirely confident. He wasn’t sure if his roommates would be able to recognize his boyfriend or feel that he looked familiar.
After all, unlike him, his roommates didn’t pay attention to celebrity news while watching TV shows.
“I’m just curious about how he’s cute and handsome, that’s why I couldn’t help but ask,” Wei Zhuowei said helplessly. “We are, uh, kind of like your ‘family,’ right?”
Wei Zhuowei felt like Lin Mo was a bit too lovestruck. When he talked about his boyfriend, it was like he turned into a completely different person.
When it came to his boyfriend, he wasn’t as gentle or easygoing as he usually was, and there was none of the clear and rational thinking he had when discussing group assignments. Instead, he resembled what Wei Zhuowei had jokingly called the negative stereotype of a “delicate wife.”
It seemed like all his focus was on his boyfriend, and he had lost a bit of himself.
In this context, Wei Zhuowei did have some doubts about what Lin Mo meant by “cute” and “handsome.”
As the saying goes, the reason Old Ming’s grandfather lived to ninety was because he never meddled in others’ business.
Wei Zhuowei knew that being too involved wasn’t good.
As long as his roommate’s boyfriend was a good person who genuinely cared for Lin Mo and didn’t become a scumbag because of so-called “real-world” factors, then he’d be fine. What mattered most was that he was an interesting soul.
How he looked was the least important factor.
But just thinking about the possibility of “flowers growing in cow dung” made Wei Zhuowei feel uncomfortable inside.
He truly regarded himself as part of Lin Mo’s family.
A mother-in-law would never be fully satisfied with her son-in-law.
Lin Mo didn’t know how to explain the situation when he was called “family,” and his head hung even lower.
“Anyway, he’s a really good person… Wei, stop guessing things.”
Wei Zhuowei, frustrated by his vague and ambiguous attitude, sighed heavily. “I’m just worried that you don’t have much life experience and might get tricked by someone who says ‘I’m ugly but gentle.'”
“He’s not ugly, you’ll definitely think he’s handsome and cute,” Lin Mo retorted seriously.
Wei Zhuowei: “…”
Once it came to his boyfriend’s “reputation,” Lin Mo seemed like a completely different person.
Maybe this is what love does to people.
Li Heng thought to himself quietly.
However, he couldn’t really imagine what he would be like when he fell in love.
Though he felt that “love” itself was a wonderful thing, if he put himself in Lin Mo’s shoes, he felt more of a sense of fear than the sweetness Lin Mo showed.
It felt like love could make a person lose themselves.
He subconsciously wanted to message Xie Duzhi and Mingyue, asking them about their views on love, but then he remembered that besides his parents, there weren’t many people around him who could offer any advice.
Perhaps Xie Sizhi might have something to say.
But he felt that his second brother’s experience couldn’t really be called “experience” and wasn’t of much reference value.
“Mo Mo, what time do you think we should leave?”
He glanced at the time. “Your boyfriend’s place isn’t very close to school, I think.”
Lin Mo still hadn’t told them his boyfriend’s name, saying that his boyfriend planned to introduce himself formally when they met, so it was being kept a secret for now.
So, when referring to Lin Mo’s boyfriend, they would just say “your boyfriend” instead of his name.
Lin Mo’s boyfriend had booked a meal for them at a well-known private restaurant that Li Heng vaguely remembered. Before the college entrance exam, Xie Duzhi used to order from that restaurant often, as he really liked their squirrel-shaped mandarin fish.
It seemed like Lin Mo had also gone there with his family before, though not very often.
“Wait, I’ll ask him.” Lin Mo answered him while picking up his phone. “He told us to just go there directly, he’s already ordered the dishes, and said the food here won’t disappoint us.”
“…” If that’s the case, then why ask him what time to leave?
Li Heng was a bit confused.
But he didn’t ask further, attributing it to the kind of clingy behavior couples sometimes have.
Besides, Lin Mo’s boyfriend responded quickly, almost as if he had been waiting for his message, his eyes never leaving the screen.
“He suggests we leave at three, so even if there’s traffic, we won’t be too late,” Lin Mo said, putting his phone away and grabbing his coat.
It was nearly 2:45 already, and getting a taxi and leaving the school would take time.
“Isn’t three a bit early?” Wei Zhuowei opened the map and checked the estimated travel time and distance. “Even with traffic on the highway, we’ll probably arrive by a little after five?”
Lin Mo had said earlier that they wouldn’t be back until at least 8 or 9 in the evening.
The food was already ordered, so it wasn’t like they’d just eat and leave by 6 or 7, standing around doing nothing, just being a third wheel.
Just thinking about being a third wheel, watching others be in love, made Wei Zhuowei feel uneasy.
But Lin Mo didn’t think that much about it, or maybe he instinctively trusted his boyfriend’s arrangement. “Maybe the dishes take longer to prepare, that’s why he wants us to go early.”
“We might be eating for a long time,” hw added, somewhat regretfully.
He felt that he only got to see his boyfriend on weekends, and if only the day could be longer, like thirty-six or forty-eight hours, that would be great.
Moreover, his boyfriend was only staying in S City for a month, so they wouldn’t even get to spend Christmas together. They wouldn’t be able to go to a famous landmark to ring in the New Year like the couples in TV shows.
Once this time passed, they’d have to return to their usual way of interacting—communicating through messages and phone calls.
Lin Mo thought he could only see his boyfriend through video calls.
Before they met, he might have thought it was fine, because that was how it had always been. Even though they were apart, the anxiety and care he felt, the support and company during his moments of confusion, was solid and real.
He felt like he was a beam of light that had unknowingly entered his dark, narrow heart, without even realizing how bright he was.
Because of his presence, Lin Mo felt warmer and more optimistic.
He never thought about touching the light, but yesterday’s meeting made him suddenly realize that he, too, could be treated so gently, cherished and loved in a way that was unique in the world.
Once he had encountered it, he didn’t want to let go, no longer content with just being influenced or illuminated by it.
The entire ride, he seemed somewhat silent.
Wei Zhuowei, sitting in the passenger seat, was checking the pricing of the restaurant, planning to make sure his roommate’s boyfriend wouldn’t end up footing the entire bill. He intended to think of a way to split the cost afterward.
He wouldn’t let his roommate’s boyfriend just pay for everything. What if, behind the friendly attitude, he secretly thought they were taking advantage of him? Although he admitted that the limited edition figure his roommate’s boyfriend had given them was indeed very thoughtful.
But what if it was all just a facade?
So, it was better to split the bill and save face for Lin Mo.
He didn’t notice Lin Mo’s strange mood and continued to text Li Heng.
Lin Mo still had a bit of money saved up, so even though it would hurt to spend thousands on a meal, he could afford it.
Originally, he had planned to use that money to buy the latest gaming console and upgrade his home computer with a new graphics card for the summer. But now, with how fast electronic devices were updating, he figured he could save a bit more before making the purchase.
“Mo Mo…?” Li Heng noticed his downcast mood and called him with concern. “You seem like you didn’t sleep well. Do you want to take a nap? I’ll wake you up when we arrive.”
He didn’t directly ask what was bothering him.
If Lin Mo didn’t say anything, he would act like he hadn’t noticed.
Pressing too much would make someone uncomfortable—he felt like Lin Mo already felt uncomfortable, so why make his friend feel even worse under the guise of “concern”?
“…No, it’s nothing. I just feel a bit carsick,” Lin Mo tilted his head back, forcing a smile that was a little strained. “I’ll feel better once we get out of the car.”
Li Heng had motion sickness medicine with him.
He wasn’t sure whether Lin Mo was genuinely carsick or if he was just making up an excuse, but he handed him the medicine anyway.
“If you’re really not feeling well, you can take one.”
Lin Mo thanked him but left the motion sickness medicine on the side, instead staring out the window.
Li Heng felt like he was zoning out again, lost in thought.
This wasn’t right.
He quickly sent Wei Zhuowei an “OK” emoji, thinking that if Lin Mo’s boyfriend really was the type to show one face and act another, he would just tell the restaurant manager or owner to charge it to Xie Duzhi’s or his second brother’s account.
Xie Sizhi was a regular at that restaurant.
As for Xie Duzhi—Li Heng remembered him mentioning once that he had bought half of the restaurant.
He still didn’t understand, though. Lin Mo had become so much more cheerful lately—his social life and everything were improving, and his relationship with his boyfriend seemed to be going smoothly…
So why did he still seem like the same melancholy person he was when they first met?
He shared his thoughts with Wei Zhuowei, thinking he was the only one who could help make sense of it.
【awsl: I think it’s normal. Didn’t you notice Mo Mo is totally lovesick?】
【awsl: I don’t mean “lovesick” in a bad way… I mean, his behavior is more about insecurity, which is common in the early stages of a relationship, and it usually sticks around throughout the whole relationship.】
Wei Zhuowei had never been in a relationship, but he had seen others go through it.
His online friends, who had been with him from middle school through college, had already moved past the dating phase, and some even had kids who were already heading into kindergarten.
At the time, when they were in a relationship, they relied on their group of friends for advice, almost like they were scientists, analyzing every word and sentence their partner said.
【awsl: Plus, he was a bit insecure to begin with. When he described his boyfriend, he always used words like “excellent,” saying how amazing his boyfriend was, so… he felt off-balance.】
【Little Meow Meow: You mean Mo Mo feels like Cinderella?】
He couldn’t find a better description at the moment.
Wei Zhuowei couldn’t hold back and let out a chuckle.
【awsl: Pretty much XD】
Lin Mo had indeed said that his boyfriend gave off a “prince” vibe—someone who was pampered and privileged.
【awsl: His boyfriend is obviously a rich second-generation guy, and maybe his values make Lin Mo feel burdened and pressured without realizing it.】
Even though Wei Zhuowei’s analysis was clear and thorough, Li Heng still found it a bit strange.
From what Lin Mo had described, his boyfriend should be the kind of person who was not only sunny and enthusiastic but also attentive, always considering Lin Mo’s emotions, offering encouragement, and helping him recognize his own strengths.
Such a person would have immediately reassured him the moment he noticed the disparity in their financial standing, not leaving him feeling insecure or inferior because of it, right?
Lin Mo should trust him completely and listen to him. Even if it was just some simple words of comfort, it shouldn’t have left him feeling like this.
… Maybe Wei Zhuowei’s analysis wasn’t accurate? Maybe he had misunderstood the reason?
The more he thought about it, the more confused he became, so he decided to let it go.
Whatever—life isn’t just about relationships, and besides, this wasn’t his relationship, it was his roommate’s.
No matter how much he worried, it was Lin Mo who was directly involved, not him or Wei Zhuowei.
Aside from offering emotional support, all they could really do was make sure Lin Mo didn’t get looked down on by his boyfriend, lowering the overall impression.
Or maybe offer some comfort if he was unlucky enough to experience a breakup?
He didn’t want that for Lin Mo, because he could sense how important that boyfriend was to him.
Clearly, to him, this person was more than just a boyfriend.
【awsl: Maybe it’s just that we’re too much of the homebody type, so we overthink things. To others, this might seem perfectly normal hhahah】
【Little Meow Meow: [Cat in deep thought.jpg]】
【awsl: I really hope Mo Mo’s boyfriend is really like he says, a handsome, cute younger guy [praying nia.jpg]】
Although they were saying this in the messages, Wei Zhuowei didn’t really have high expectations. In fact, he had already prepared himself for the worst before they got out of the car.
No matter how he looked—whether he was some chubby guy with a face full of flesh—it didn’t matter as long as he was a good person.
In a relationship, character mattered most, especially when it was a first love, which could influence future views on choosing a partner.
What surprised him was that Lin Mo’s boyfriend actually matched the descriptions of “handsome” and “cute” perfectly.
When he saw the young man sitting in the reserved private room, waving at them confidently, he was taken aback, feeling like his worldview had been shaken.
… Could it be that their roommate Lin Mo was actually living the script of a romance novel’s male lead?
After all, how else could his boyfriend, whom he met through a bottle message, be a recent rising star in the entertainment industry—someone whose name even Wei Zhuowei, a standard “otaku,” knew?
And not just any star, but one with a supposedly impressive family background who was apparently planning to return to inherit the family business instead of focusing on acting.
He couldn’t help but let out an exclamation.
In the quiet room, the words “What the heck” were clearly audible.
“… You… you’re really… you can’t be that…?” He suddenly didn’t know what to say to this reality that seemed more exciting than a novel.
He just hoped that the guy was a lucky doppelganger.
“Wow, looks like you know me,” the person in the private room said with a very happy expression, his eyes curving into a smile.
“Let me introduce myself. I’m Bai Ruan, Mo Mo’s boyfriend… I guess I’m an actor now?”
