Chapter 31: Undead Horde
Luke was rooted to the spot as Tom blasted off his feet, tumbling to the ground. People screamed out in horror. Luke looked up to see zombies, actual zombies, making their way down into the parking lot.

Luke Blinked at the unexpected message.
"Come on, Godling!!" Theo shouted. "Get your head in the game before you become a corpse's chew toy."
Theo turned to the other people.
"Join the guild now!! It could be the difference between Life and death," he shouted.
People started to shake themselves, and then there was a roar. Luke turned to find Hector or maybe Abaddon? Launch himself up the ramp, smashing through the zombies with ease. He charged whoever had attacked them. Skippy chased after him, his weapons glowing as follows.
Luke shot a glance towards Tom. He saw Alex casting golden spells over his burnt body while the firefighters tried to apply first aid to him. Chloe was crying. Luke felt angry. Anger and rage made him turn and charge towards the undead, even as Theo tried to shout at him. Skippy was already hacking through them with ease as Luke arrived at the fight.
This time, he didn't hesitate as he smashed the head of what he thought might be an undead goblin. Its body crumbled to the ground with the blow before Luke turned again as another undead came at him. He swung his blade around, taking off its head, but then another undead charged him, and another, and another.
Then, an arrow flew by his ear, stabbing into one of the undead and dropping it instantly.
"What?" Luke turned to see his friends charging up the ramp to help him. Issac and Gareth raced up behind him as Sam took potshots at the undead. Even a few firemen and police officers were coming up behind them to help. Smiling, Luke turned back as he continued to hack at the undead horde. Skippy made them all look like rank amateurs as the anthropomorphic squirrel man practically teleported between the undead and destroyed them one after another.
As they were hacking through the undead horde with relative ease, a fireball shot towards them
"Oh shi--" Luke swore just before a wall of water rose up to intercept the fireball.
Before Luke could process the information, five more fireballs shot past him into the undead horde, devastating the zombies.
Luke turned around. This time, it wasn't his friends coming up behind them to help; it was Alex. She was flying over their heads as she rained down death and destruction on the undead, forcing the entire army back all on her own.
"STOP!!" someone shouted.
Luke turned back to the undead army and saw some guy dressed up as an edge lord with a scythe in his hand. Raising his Scythe, he fired a bolt of lightning straight towards Alex. She deflected it with ease before spears of lightning appeared around her, shooting towards the edge lord.
The edge lord didn't even dodge away as the spears of electricity impacted his chest; the man didn't even flinch, but Luke noticed more than a few of the undead around him dropped to the ground, turning to dust.
"I am not going to lose to some bimbo witch!!" the edge lord shouted as he exchanged spells with Alex.
The edge lord was so busy dueling with Alex that he failed to notice Skippy until the jackass was right on top of him, his sword stabbing into his chest and causing two of the nearest undead to turn to dust.
"FUCKING WEAK," the edge lord swore as he brought his scythe around to try and kill Skippy.
But the squirrel man had already lept back to dodge the attack before dashing forward again to slash at the edge lord. Unfortunately, this time, the edge lord was ready. He parried Skippies' attack and tried to counterattack, but Alex was already hammering away at him again with magic. Every time she did, another undead turned to dust.
This time, it was obvious that the edge lord's undead were somehow taking the damage for him.
"The edge lord is healing himself using the zombies. Kill all of the zombies!!" Luke called out as he redoubled his efforts to cut away at the seemingly endless number of zombies.
He appeared to have touched a nerve because a more intact-looking zombie than the others, covered in armor with a sword and a shield, charged towards him.
Twisting his body to face his new challenger, activating [Periphetes' Crippling Strike], he brought his enlarged glowing sword down on the undead shield. The flimsy wooden shield was smashed into splinters, and the zombie's left arm was a ruined mess. But the zombie didn't even react as it lashed out weakly with its sword. Luke tried to parry, knocking the blade away sloppily.
Luke thrust out with his replica of the master sword, turning just in time to guide the length of steel deep into the armpit of the undead. With a grunt of effort, Luke wrenched his sword out, pulling the zombie's left arm with it and a good chunk of its shoulder off with it. Despite that, the zombie didn't even react to the attack as it clumsily stabbed at his retreating form, missing by an inch.
Bringing his sword around, Luke slashed across the zombie's torso, causing the zombie to stumble backwards before he stabbed the undead again, then kicking the rotting thing to the ground. The zombie stumbled, falling to the ground before Luke brought his sword around and stabbed it in the creature's head. The blue light in the zombie's eyes flickered out as it died.
Looking up, Luke scanned his surroundings as his friends cut down the weak zombies with relative ease. The Scythe-wielding edge lord was a different case. Alex had switched targets back to the undead horde and was busily setting them all on fire.
Skippy and the edge lord were disappearing and reappearing as they swiped at each other at high speeds like they were characters in a dragon ball manga. Both of them were already covered in injuries but even could tell that Skippy was winning.
"FUCK, fuckety fuck fuck fuck!!!" The edge lord swore.
"What's the matter, shitlord?!" Skippy called out. "Can't keep up? Or is the poison finally catching up with you?"
"Fuck you, you fucking coward! Fight me fair and square!!!" the edge lord shouted.
"Says the pot to the kettle. Now shut up and die!!" Skippy shot back.
Before the fight could continue, a massive flaming bird appeared out of nowhere, snatching up the edge lord and flying off. Abaddon appeared hot on the bird's heels chasing it.
""GET BACK HERE, SHITLORD"" Abaddon and Skippy shouted as they tried to attack the retreating bird.
Luke watched as Alex launched dozens of spells at their retreating forms.
"God fucking dammit!!" Skippy said. "I'm going to fucking kill that shit stain."
"I killed my'n," Abaddon boasted.
"Then why is he still alive?" Skippy asked.
"[Rebirth of the Phoenix]" Abaddon said. "I think it's a bloodline ability; the guy is a pure-fire user. What about your guy?"
"Reaper class, he has some version of [Parasite] and [Way of the Reaper] pain in the ass to fight," Skippy said. "Might have a bloodline"
"Any idea what he wanted?" Luke asked as he walked up to the two of them.
Skippy and Abaddon turned to him. Luke had never been friends with either of them before. Abaddon's dislike of him seems to be based on Tom's dislike of him. Skippy, on the other hand, didn't seem to dislike him more than he disliked anyone else.
"No idea. In the game, I would have said it was for bragging rights, or maybe they wanted to conquer the settlement. But now I'm not so sure." Skippy said.
"In-game?" Luke asked, confused as fire chief Adams walked up beside them.
"This system was based on a game called the Legend of Noralon. Or maybe it was the other way around. Regardless, we logged into the game for the new expansion and woke up as our characters." Skippy explained. "Or did you think I was always a four-foot-tall anthropomorphized squirrel?"
""Seriously?"" Luke and Fire Chief Adams asked.
"Yep, even got a nice title of beta-tester for it."
"That's why you guys are handling this so well," Adams muttered. "The monsters, the power, even the school. For you, this isn't all that much different from what you were expecting to be doing."
Skippy squired up Abaddon's body to sit on his shoulders.
"Pretty much," Skippy said.
Abaddon looked up at his friend.
"Why are you sitting on me like a parrot?" Abaddon asked.
"I lost like Two feet. Give me this." Skippy said.
Abaddon signed before going back down the ramp.
"Come on, let's go check up on Tom," Abaddon said.
Luke felt the blood drain from his face.
"Do you think he's still alive?" Luke asked.
"Of course, he's still alive," Skippy said. "We're still getting the bonuses from his class, so of course, he's still alive."
Adams looked around at the sea of dead Zombie bodies. None of them were human, but he wasn't sure if that made him feel better. Though if he was being honest this entire situation left him feeling confused. Especially the fact that his entire world hadn't just become a video game. But a video game that had already been in circulation. He was still trying to decide if that was better or worse. He looked around at the devastation five people, what five beta testers had unleashed on day two of the system. The only reason no one had died was because they had all been focused on each other instead of them.
Adams shook his head. Until they properly understood the situation, he would need to keep on these people's good side. He needed them a lot more than they needed him or anyone else, for that matter.
Tom's mind swam in and out of consciousness. His arm was in sheer agony. He tried casting lesser heal on himself but he kept fumbling the spell. Each time he failed the spell, another lance of burning agony shot through him.
"How bad is it?" someone familiar asked.
"Third-degree burns on most of his left arm," someone else said. "I'm not sure if he'll regain use of the arm. But he's stable."
"Lesser heal," the familiar voice said.
Relief washed through Tom's body as some of the pain disappeared.
"What did you do?" the unfamiliar voice asked.
"Healing magic. Tom is really the person who should be doing this. But I can get him back on his feet, at least. Then he can take care of the rest," the familiar voice said.
"I know it's healing magic. I grabbed [Life Magic] myself, but I can't do what you're doing." Chester said.
"They're more than one healing spell. I'm using a combination of different spells to address the issue. You've been trying to brute-force your healing by restoring their HP, and that's why it's so expensive. I can show you some better spells later."
Waves of healing magic started to bombard his body, the agony in his arm fading with each casting until he could open his eyes again.
"Hey," Alex said, tears streaking down her face
"What did I miss?" Tom asked painfully.
He looked down at his arm. It was horrific. His arm was already bandaged up, but the bandage was soaked red with his blood, and worst of all, it still felt like he was burning. He would be in far more pain if his stats weren't so much higher than he expected.
"Thank god for Ego," Tom signed as he tried to get up.
"Wow, wow," one of the larger firefighters tried to stop him from getting up.
"You're injured; you can't just get up. I would have taken you to the hospital if it wasn't filled with monsters." Alex said
Tom shot her a look.
"Sir, I'm in a lot of pain right now, so let me make this brief. I am going to heal myself. If you try and stop me, I'm blasting you with water, and then I'm going to leave you out here in the cold for the night." Tom warned as he pulled himself to his feet.
The firefighter looked like he wanted to argue even more, but the fire chief. Tom had to double-check his status to remember his name, Bailey Adams. Mr.Adam pulled the woman away and allowed Tom to walk into the parking lot. Zombie corpses decorated the ramp leading out of the parking lot.
"Going to need to clean that up," Tom muttered.
Reaching for his magic, he started to write out a ritual mid-air designed to fire off a bunch of Life spells in sequence. He first had to dull the pain, then strip off all of the burned flesh, restore the flesh, restore his HP, fix the nerve endings, fix his muscles, and restore his skin. He followed that up with a powerful Mend spell to cover any of his mistakes.
Once it was finished, he shoved his arm into the ritual, activating the magic. What happened next was gruesome. His arm was ripped apart as golden life magic flowed into his limb. Muscles and skin regenerated over his arm in a grotesque display. The entire thing took less than a minute.
Tom screamed as his restored arm came to Life. His body jerked as he collapsed to the ground as he was inundated with pain.
"Ow." Tom groaned. "I think I mistimed the pain nullification."
The pain was already disappearing as he pushed himself to his feet. He absently noticed that his left arm was far paler than his right now. Like painfully white, he had also forgotten to grow his fingernails, so it was going to be fun to grow those back.
"Couldn't you have just sliced off the arm and then grown it back?" Alex asked.
Tom froze.
"Shit, why didn't I think of that?" Tom groaned. "That would have been way easier."
"Tom?" Chloe's voice cut into his thoughts.
He sat up to see his little sister standing on the pavement with Alex. Looking at him, hopefully. She looked upset.
"Chloe, what's wrong?" Tom asked, getting up and walking over to her.
"I'm sorry," Chloe sobbed.
"Sorry? Chloe, you've done nothing wrong." Tom placated her as he scooped her up in his arms.
"But you got hurt," Chloe cried into his chest in big heaping sobs.
"And I got better," Tom said as he rubbed her back.
Then, surprisingly, Alex wrapped her arms around him, hugging him tightly. She almost gave off a sense of desperation, as if she wanted to make sure he wasn't about to disappear, as she embraced him so tightly it almost hurt. But he didn't say anything.
"You're not allowed to get injured like that again. You understand me?" Alex said her voice was raw. "We were so worried."
"Right next time, I'll make sure to keep Abaddon around as a human meat shield." Tom half-joked.
Then his face turned serious.
"What happened while I was out?" Tom asked.
"Five more minutes," Alex pouted as she hugged him.
Tom rolled his eyes, but he waited. Finally, after more than five minutes, Alex let him go. Chloe was wrapped around him so tightly that Tom expected he wouldn't get her off of him until she fell asleep.
"Ok, we drove them off. One of them was a pure [Reaper] build, while the other one was a [Master Pyromancer] and [Flame Enhancer]. At least, that's what we think. We think they both have bloodlines, but there is nothing on the [Reaper]. But we think the pyromancer took the Vermilion Phoenix bloodline. Abaddon killed him, and he came back on top of that he had wings of fire." Alex stated.
"So a classic [Pyromancer] build. And a [Reaper]," Tom noted. "First Starkiller, now these jokers. How is today worse than yesterday?"
"Come on inside. We can talk in the pit."
Tom followed her up to the main entrance as he fiddled with his status with his new levels. He had a few things he wanted to purchase.
