Meeting the goddess (Prolog)
"Mike, before we start all this, can I ask a personal question?"
"Warden, you can ask anything you want. If I decide to answer is another matter entirely." I said while staring at the wall from the chair I was strapped to.
"What turns one of our countries most decorated soldiers into a contract killer?" He asked me while watching the viewing room fill with people.
I actually have respect for the guy so I give him my honest thoughts. "Warden, in my opinion our country turned me into a contract killer. I just changed employers, and it was very lucrative."
"How much exactly?" The Warden was looking at me with a skeptical look in his eyes.
I continued staring at nothing with a smile on my face as I told him. "I made over thirty billion since I changed over and still don't regret it. Two hundred and fourty seven targets killed. The feds bringing me down for five is kinda disappointing to be honest. But more wouldn't have changed where I am at right now so no hard feelings I guess."
At that moment the guard motions for the start of the proceedings and the Warden goes and stands over by the microphone in the corner and starts his speech which I mostly ignore until he asks me. "Any last words?"
I said "After this just look under my pillow. I left you a little something Warden. Now let's get this party started." And just smiled as he flipped the switch and everything went dark.
I dont really feel any different so I call out. "Am I dead yet?"
Suddenly I hear a woman's voice. "Yes. You died. And now your to be judged."
"And who are you? I can't see anything. Everything is black."
"I am Quilan, Goddess of love, hate, and war. Your currently just a soul. So that's natural. Now on to business. For the sin of murder of hundreds of innocent civilians that have nothing to do with war I sentence you to hell for all eternity. Do you have anything to say in your defense?"
After a few moments to process what I had been told I gave my reply. "I have none goddess. I am completely guilty. I was just hoping it would all be over after my death. Not an eternity to continue my suffering. That's actually kinda scary. But I leave my judgment to you."
The goddess took a few moments to speak again after that. "Not what I was expecting out of you....I did see the letter you left for that Warden. Names of your victims with the corresponding names and addresses of the ones who hired you and the payments made. That will put a lot of people away. I also know what you did with your monetary gains. The children's hospital will be able to help a lot of children and families. So I ask again, do you have anything to say for yourself?"
"I think my actions speak for themselves. There's no need for arguing and I refuse to beg."
"Hmmm..." The goddess put her finger on her chin and adopted a thinking pose for a few minutes. "You need to learn some humbling while in the presence of a goddess, but I like your style. So I'll make you a one time offer. Become a hero in the worst system that I govern. It is rife with trouble, slavery, looming wars, rampaging demons, and the threat of a demon lord stands at the top. Are you interested?"
It did not sound very appealing but it was better than hell so I agreed. "Yes. Can you tell me more about where I'll be starting out at?"
"Ok, so currently....I have three places available to put you. I have the bodies of a fish, which would be a complete waste of time, a frog, also a waste, and lastly....yes, yes that looks interesting. Hehehe." She laughed.
I have a bad feeling about the way she laughed.
"I will grant you the title of champion which will give you a stat boost. If you work hard you will receive the Hero title granting major bonuses, and a ticket out of hell from me."
"So if I reach Hero status I will nolonger go to hell? Sounds simple enough. What's the catch?" I asked.
"Take down the demon lord. That's it. Now prepare yourself. This part tends to get a little bumpy." She said, as something started getting warm, then hot, and my thoughts started getting fuzzy up until I passed out.
