The Forsaken Legacy

Chapter 10: The Pendant’s Call

The lively sounds of the market buzzed around them as they wandered through the labyrinth of stalls, each boasting exotic items, gleaming crystals, and fragrant herbs. Kai had been admiring a collection of ornately painted vases when a sudden pull—a feeling as deep as it was unexpected—captured his attention. His gaze drifted, and he found himself being drawn to a small, almost hidden stall nestled between two larger ones, as though it were waiting just for him.

“Kai?” Lia’s voice was tinged with concern as she noticed his distant look. “Are you alright?”

But Kai didn’t respond. His legs moved seemingly of their own accord, and he made his way to the stall, Lia and Aurelia following close behind, watching his every step. The items laid out were mostly trinkets—small carvings, old maps, and a scattering of half-broken jewelry. But among the clutter, his eyes fell upon a pendant, tarnished and cracked, yet glowing faintly in the dim light. His breath caught in his throat.

Behind him, Aurelia stiffened, her expression one of stunned recognition. Her hand went to her mouth, trembling as she took in the sight of the pendant. Lia noticed her reaction and whispered, “Mother, what’s wrong?”

Aurelia seemed to snap back, shaking her head as if to clear her thoughts. “It’s… nothing,” she murmured, though her voice betrayed her unease.

Kai, oblivious to Aurelia’s reaction, turned to the shopkeeper. “How much for the pendant?” he asked, a hint of urgency in his voice.

The shopkeeper, noticing the spark of interest, smirked. “Ah, you have a good eye. This is no ordinary trinket. For you, I’ll part with it for… five silver.”

Kai’s face fell; he had nowhere near that amount. “Five silver? But it’s damaged.”

“Damaged or not, it’s a rare piece,” the shopkeeper insisted, clearly bent on squeezing out every coin he could.

Just as Kai was about to give up, Aurelia stepped forward, her expression steely. She reached into her robe and produced a small silver badge—the emblem of the Alchemist Association. The shopkeeper’s face paled.

“I believe you’ll reconsider the price,” she said calmly, her voice commanding.

“Yes, of course, Master Alchemist,” the man stammered, hastily lowering his price. “For you, two copper is more than fair, I think.”

Kai handed over the coins, his fingers trembling as he reached for the pendant. As soon as his hand closed around it, a strange warmth seeped into his skin, and his heartbeat quickened. Aurelia, who was still watching intently, said nothing, but her gaze lingered on the pendant as though it were some long-lost relic.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, Eldrin returned, his expression unreadable as he surveyed the group. “It’s getting late. Let’s find an inn for the night,” he announced.

The inn was a cozy, modest place with dim lanterns and the scent of freshly baked bread in the air. They secured a quiet room on the second floor, and after a hearty meal, each prepared to settle in for the night. Yet as they lay in the stillness, Kai’s mind was racing, the day’s events swirling around like a storm. Finally, he rolled over to see Eldrin, who was resting nearby, his arms crossed over his chest as he gazed out the window at the stars.

In a soft, almost hesitant voice, Kai asked, “Eldrin… do you think someone like me, without a noble bloodline, could ever make it on the path of cultivation?”

Eldrin turned to look at him, his face softening, though his voice held a rare gravity. “Bloodline or not, the strength of a cultivator lies in their heart, Kai. I’ve seen people with the purest bloodlines fail and give up at the first obstacle, and I’ve seen commoners rise to heights no one thought possible.”

Kai’s gaze dropped, and he absently rubbed the pendant in his palm. “But… how? How could someone ordinary compete with nobles who’ve had years of training?”

Eldrin shifted, his eyes intense as they met Kai’s. “It takes courage, discipline, and an unbreakable mind. Bloodline can give someone a head start, but it’s the strength of spirit that carries you forward. If you want something badly enough, and you’re willing to work harder than anyone else, you’ll find your own way. Set your mind to it, Kai, and don’t waver.”

The words sank into Kai like stones, settling somewhere deep in his heart. Eldrin’s expression softened even further. “A rare heart like yours, Kai, can surpass any bloodline. But it takes time, resilience, and grit. Don’t let anything or anyone make you feel less than you are.”

Kai clenched his fist around the pendant, feeling a surge of determination. He didn’t know exactly where his path would lead, but in that moment, he made a silent promise to himself: he would walk his own path, with or without the advantages of birth.

Eldrin’s words echoed in his mind as he drifted off to sleep, his dreams tinged with the memory of the mysterious woman and the light of a destiny he was only beginning to glimpse.
