Chapter 21: An Unexpected Request
The next morning, Ren was feeling better but still weary from the overwhelming experience of using his connection powers. As he leaned back in his chair, sipping a cup of tea, he heard a knock on the door. Kazuha, who had been quietly tidying up, looked up with curiosity.
Ren opened the door to find Kazuma standing there, his usual carefree grin plastered on his face.
“Yo, Ren! Long time no see!” Kazuma greeted with a playful salute. “I’ve got a little favor to ask. Think you could help a fellow afterlifer out?”
Ren raised an eyebrow. “Kazuma, what kind of ‘favor’ are we talking about here? You’re not exactly known for your straightforward requests.”
Kazuma chuckled, scratching the back of his head. “Oh, you know, just a little mission. Nothing too crazy, I promise. Just need an extra pair of hands—or two.”
Ren hesitated. Kazuma was notorious for getting himself into all sorts of trouble, often dragging others along with him. Whatever this mission was, it was likely far from simple. He glanced over at Kazuha, who had been listening intently.
“Kazuma, what exactly is this mission?” Ren asked cautiously. “I’m not agreeing to anything without knowing the details.”
Kazuma waved a dismissive hand. “Don’t worry about the details! It’s just a quick in-and-out thing. Besides, it’ll be fun! You could use a little excitement after being cooped up in that café all day.”
Ren frowned. “I’m not sure. I’ve still got a lot on my plate, and—”
Before he could finish, Kazuha stepped forward. “Ren, maybe we should go with him. You’ve been pushing yourself too hard lately, and a change of scenery might be good for you. Besides, I don’t want you to go off alone after everything that’s happened.”
Ren looked at Kazuha, concern etched on her face. She had been worried about him ever since the encounter with Rengoku, and he knew she wouldn’t let him go alone. He sighed, realizing he had little choice.
“Alright, Kazuma. We’ll come with you,” Ren finally agreed. “But if this turns out to be more trouble than it’s worth, I’m holding you responsible.”
Kazuma beamed. “Perfect! Meet me at the market in 20 minutes. We’ll start from there.”
With that, Kazuma waved goodbye and disappeared into the distance. Ren turned to Kazuha, who was already getting ready to leave. He couldn’t help but feel a bit uneasy about this mission, but Kazuha’s determination to accompany him made him feel more at ease.
As they stepped out into the chilly morning air, Ren noticed Kazuha shivering slightly. The cold seemed to bite at them as they walked through the quiet streets, their breaths visible in the crisp air.
After a few minutes, Ren glanced at Kazuha, who was doing her best to keep warm. Without thinking, he gently pulled her closer to him, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. Then, with a soft smile, he took her hand and slipped it into his coat pocket along with his own.
Kazuha’s eyes widened in surprise, a soft blush spreading across her cheeks. She instinctively wanted to pull away out of shyness, but the warmth of Ren’s hand and the comforting feeling of being close to him made her stay. She allowed herself to relax, enjoying the warmth that spread through her.
“Is this alright?” Ren asked softly, glancing down at her.
Kazuha nodded, her voice barely a whisper. “It’s... nice. Thank you.”
They walked in comfortable silence for the rest of the journey, the cold no longer bothering them as much. The streets slowly became busier as they approached the market, the hustle and bustle of people going about their day creating a lively atmosphere.
After about 20 minutes, they arrived at the market, a vibrant and chaotic scene with vendors shouting their wares and customers haggling over prices. The air was filled with the scents of fresh produce, spices, and street food.
Kazuma was waiting for them at the entrance, leaning against a post with his arms crossed. He flashed them a grin when he saw them approaching.
“Right on time!” Kazuma said, clapping his hands together. “Alright, let’s get this show on the road!”
Ren narrowed his eyes. “Now, Kazuma, before we do anything, you need to tell us what this mission actually is.”
Kazuma chuckled, rubbing his chin. “Oh, it’s nothing too crazy. We just need to help out a friend of mine who’s... let’s say, gotten themselves into a bit of a situation. We’ll be in and out in no time, and then we can grab a bite to eat or something. Easy, right?”
Ren sighed, knowing that Kazuma’s definition of “easy” was usually far from it. But with Kazuha by his side, he felt ready to take on whatever craziness Kazuma had in store.
“Alright, lead the way,” Ren said, his tone resigned but ready for whatever lay ahead.
As they followed Kazuma through the crowded market, Ren and Kazuha exchanged glances, a silent understanding passing between them. Whatever this mission turned out to be, they would face it together—just as they always had.
Little did they know, this would be one of the more unpredictable and chaotic adventures yet, and it would test not only their skills but their bond as well.
