The 14th Prince's Sage

Chapter 8

Chapter 8

He looked back at the prince, who had stayed quiet during the conversation. He let out a sigh of defeat.

“I really can’t remember the events that brought me here, even though my memories from the past are quite clear.”

It's important for them to understand that inventing stories about his background is pointless, as he has a clear recollection of it.

The prince, who had been silent until he received a response to his question, finally began to speak again.

“I have not encountered any Travelers myself, so I am unable to ascertain whether that is typical.”

Prince Konstantinos simply shrugs, his face revealing no emotion.

‘This person is certainly not helping to dispel my NPC allegation.’

Why does he only respond when asked or in reaction to others? His behavior is rather strange.

With a sigh, he meets the prince's gaze with confidence.

“What is it that you truly want from me? If you're looking to explore different dimensions, I'm afraid I don't have the information you're looking for.”

Are they trying to acquire the method he used to navigate worldlines?

The prince waved his hand dismissively.

“That matter is irrelevant to our discussion.”

“Then what is it?”

What other motives could he have?

Konstantinos locked his eyes on him, making him squirm on the bed. His gaze darted between the prince and different spots in the room.

“You appear to lack knowledge regarding the concept of Travelers. Allow me to explain it to you.”

“You will?”

He glanced back at Alistair and opened his mouth to express his thoughts.

“Why didn’t you tell me everything yesterday?”

Now, he had to endure yet another lecture while battling hunger and fatigue, as Alistair was being unreasonably stubborn.

“I understand how you feel. Alistair usually doesn't show this level of consideration, which is why I asked about his dinner from last night.”

He was surprised by the prince's unexpected agreement.

Alistair stayed silent, continuing to act like an Imperial Guard, resolute even when pressed. In other words, he was ignoring their presence.

“He did hit his head last week.”

The prince softly murmured to himself.

Ah.

“I remember that head injuries can cause changes in behavior.”

He then recalled where he had learned this.

It was a theory he had come across while in the hospital. There was a patient who, after a car accident, showed a dramatic change in her behavior upon waking. Once a vibrant socialite, she underwent a deep transformation into a devoted individual and, within a year, dedicated herself to a religious life by becoming a nun.

The prince reflected on this narrative with a thoughtful hum.

“How fascinating.”

“Isn't it? That said, it was never proven correct.”

How is it possible for an individual to undergo such a transformation after emerging from a three-day coma? The medical team even proposed a rather strange theory about a body swap or transmigration, implying that the soul had experienced a transformation.

“What do you think of their theory?”

Considering the existence of magic in this world, he felt completely comfortable asking about the ideas of body swaps or transmigrations. In fact, he was eager to hear the prince's views on the subject.

“Hmm, it is certainly within the realm of possibility.”

His expression brightened with happiness when Konstantinos concurred with this idea.

“Exactly!”

People referred to as Travelers have the capability to move through different dimensions. Who can claim that there is only one way to travel? Soul traveling might also be a genuine idea.

“I appreciate your perspective! I remember a popular fictional series called Isekai in a—”

“Ahem.”

Alistair clears his throat to underscore the importance of their discussion and steer their focus back to the main subject. He feels a twinge of embarrassment for briefly losing concentration, while the prince swiftly adopts a more serious demeanor.

‘Just a mere servant, huh?’

He is such an obvious fraud. He has the prince entirely in his grasp.

Konstantinos began to explain.

“Travelers are entities originating from a different dimension who visit our world.”

They are mysterious figures who can appear and vanish at their own choosing. Their intentions are frequently ambiguous, and meetings with these Travelers are a once-in-a-lifetime kind of rare.

‘They can come and go as they wish…!?’

This suggests that it’s possible to leave this world and return to his former world, as long as he figures out how other Travelers manage to do so.

‘…Return home huh.’

Mother must be worried.

“… .”

“The initial Traveler made their appearance approximately 10,000 years ago, while the latest was recorded around 800 years ago.”

Over the course of 10,000 years of recorded history, fewer than 100 Travelers have come to this realm. One might expect a number in the thousands given the long duration, but the actual count is only 28.

‘I would be the 29th.’

This number is indeed lower than anticipated, but when has interdimensional travel ever been simple? It makes sense that only a select few have embarked on such journeys.

The prince indicated with his fingers, representing the number five.

“Among the 28 Travelers, five have emerged as significant figures, leaving an indelible impact on our world and ensuring their names are remembered in history.”

These five extraordinary individuals brought their distinct talents to the world, enhancing it with the marvels of magic, diverse skills, and artistic brilliance. They are legendary figures whose legacies will be honored for 10,000 years more.

The story was captivating. Many people from different realms arrive in this world, sharing their knowledge and abilities, only to fade into obscurity. What could drive such behavior? This certainly raises more questions.

Alongside his intrigue with the Travelers and their mysterious essence, another aspect piqued his curiosity.

“What do you mean they educated this world? Was there no magic here before?”

“This world was previously a commonplace realm, lacking in magic or supernatural phenomena.”

Konstantinos responds with a nod of affirmation.

It was genuinely fascinating to listen to. An ordinary world suddenly shifts into a magical realm under the influence of beings from other dimensions.

Despite his look of surprise, the prince continued to explain.

“Due to these five figures, whenever a Traveler comes, the world consistently expects something from them.”

“… .”

He could already anticipate where this conversation was headed. Yet, instead of feeling daunted, he felt a surge of excitement.

As he has nothing of value to offer either this prince or the world at large, it might be best for him to leave now.

“This is precisely the reason I felt compelled to hasten to your landing site upon your arrival.”

The prince finished his lengthy speech and looked at him expectantly.

‘So, it was driven by political motives.’

It seems this prince intended to leverage his presence to win favor with both the nobility and the general populace. The lively festivities that marked his arrival, despite the uncertainty surrounding his willingness to reveal himself, suggested a significant eagerness to pay honor to him.

They will be disappointed to learn that he has nothing to share, as his past was devoid of any noteworthy experiences. How unfortunate for the prince.

“Are you asking if I should share my experiences and insights from my world?”

“Indeed, I am.”

“Hehe.”

He chuckled softly, raising his chin with a confident air.

“Sadly for all of you, I have nothing to share! My previous life was completely mundane, lacking any elements of science fiction or fantasy!”

He laughed once more after saying this, unable to contain his excitement at finally being free.

To his astonishment, Alistair and Konstantinos seemed completely unfazed by his admission, as if they had expected this outcome all along.

“You aren't surprised by this?”

The prince responded with a nod.

“There is no cause for concern, I anticipated this outcome. Initially, I had doubts regarding your commitment to collaboration. However, I now recognize that you possess certain values.”

Thus, they must have a backup plan.

Damn it.

Plan B: Proceed with negotiations.

“So, about the deal...?”

The prince slightly tilted his head.

“Indeed, I am proposing a deal. Additionally, I will release you should you choose not to accept. I pledge this in the name of the Fides Empire.”

“…I suppose there's no harm in hearing your proposal.”

As long as it doesn't involve complicated matters like teaching them magic or granting them powers that could change the course of history. Besides, he hasn't committed to anything yet, he's simply considering their offer.

“Serve me for a period of three years.”

Serve?

What kind of service could that entail? He hesitated, reflecting on whether he had anything more to say, but ultimately decided against adding further comments.

“Is that everything?”

“Yes. However, I must request that you conceal your true identity. I will fabricate an alternate one, so there is no need for you to be concerned about your background.”

The prince's intention to conceal his true identity implies that he intends to utilize him for purposes that extend beyond mere political interests.

“Could you explain why you wish for me to serve you? I've been homeschooled my whole life, and I don't see myself as anything special.”

His former tutor frequently praised his impressive memory and ability to remain calm in tense situations. However, having never been in a traditional educational environment, he remained unsure if he was truly an exceptional student or if his tutor's compliments were simply subjective.

Furthermore, this was a traditional era, and the knowledge he gained from his previous surroundings held little relevance. It would not be useful in this new setting.

In addition, he had the internet at his disposal, which made it easier to access up-to-date information. However, this advantage was lacking in this situation. Even borrowing books had become more difficult.

“I was also educated at home.”

Konstantinos stated.

This fits with his position as a prince.

“Cool.”

“Hm. The only educational institution available caters to academy students, and as an Imperial Prince, I was far too occupied to attend in the past.”

“It makes me happy to meet someone who shared the same experience.”

He is genuinely happy after hearing this. In the past, he felt a sense of loneliness about his situation, but he now takes comfort in knowing that homeschooling is a shared experience for many people around the world.

A slight smile crossed the prince's face.

“Attending the academy appears to be enjoyable, wouldn’t you agree?”

“Definitely.”

Unlike their first meeting, the two now exchange a look that reflects a shared understanding.

“Ahem.”

Alistair was once again coughing from the back, prompting the prince to resume their discussion.

“It may not be apparent to you at this moment, but you have an exceptional talent for magic. It would be a privilege to count a proficient Caster among my associates.”

“Caster?”

What does that mean?

The prince paused for a moment.

“If you are not acquainted with the term, Casters refer to Mages.”

Mage…

It would be dishonest to say that this revelation didn't make his heart race.

“What makes you think I have a gift for magic?”

Could they have some kind of magical insight that reveals hidden abilities?

He hesitated as the prince gestured toward his own eyes.

“Green eyes signify a talent for magic.”

“Oh?”

This explains why Konstantinos believes he has some worth, even though he has little of real significance to offer in this world.

Additionally, it explains Doctor Happy's surprise when she sees his eyes. It also clarifies why he would attract attention in public, as he showcases himself as a remarkably gifted individual due to his striking green eyes.

He took a handful of his silver-white hair.

“What do you think of my hair?”

The prince studied it for a moment before replying.

“I cannot say. It is the first time I have encountered such distinctive hair.”

The hair is unrelated to the nature of his eyes then. While his eyes serve a specific function or symbol of some sort, the significance of his hair remains unclear.

“What is your response?”

He gave a thoughtful hum at the prince's question.

In reality, it’s a fair suggestion, especially given his current intrigue with magic. Moreover, he is without a clear path, short on funds, and his unique hair and eyes would certainly attract notice.

However, the downside is that if he truly has talent, he would stand out no matter the situation.

“I'm not sure…”

Should he agree or refuse without hesitation? Since this is his first time negotiating a deal, he feels unsure about whether he is making the right choices.

As he weighed the pros and cons, a particular thought resurfaced in his mind, one that had previously left him feeling perplexed.

“Work for you for three years? Why exactly three years?”

It was not his intention to extend the duration of his contract, but the specificity of three years struck him as odd.

“It corresponds to the duration for which I have cared for you.”

The response was rather quick.

“… .”

How could someone make such a statement with such calmness?

“Hold on. You were the one who came looking for me.”

So why should I bear the consequences for something that is not my responsibility? I don't think it's my responsibility that I've become a burden to you.

Konstantinos folded his arms.

“I did not anticipate that you would be unconscious. Most Travelers would have already departed by the time anyone arrived at the landing site.”

And? It’s still not his responsibility.

Before he could reply, the prince went on.

“I had intended to leave you behind, but I felt a sense of guilt upon seeing you unconscious. I am even prepared to release you if you choose not to accept my offer, without requiring you to reimburse me for the resources I have expended on your behalf.”

His statements held some truth. If left alone in the heart of the forest, his chances of survival would be slim. One could only imagine the different creatures and wild animals that might come across his defenseless condition. It’s similar to leaving a fish on a table where a cat is present.

In a sense, they truly saved his life. So, how could he refuse when he was weighed down by guilt?

“Contract…”

He spoke softly, his body shaking with frustration.

“Excuse me?”

“Hand me the damn contract!”

His unexpected outburst made both the prince and himself stop in their tracks.

“I didn't mean to raise my voice… I apologize for my rudeness.”

He scrambled in apologies.

I beg you, let me keep my life…

Konstantinos frowned but eventually offered a slight nod. His silence only intensified his unease.

“Here it is, young master.”

It was Alistair who handed him the contract.

His jaw dropped as he took hold of the document with shaking hands.

His shock stemmed not from the contents of the contract, but from the realization that it was made of gold. How rich must this person be to use gold for something as simple as a contract?

“Are you not going to read it?”

The prince asked with clear impatience.

Clearing his throat, he felt a wave of embarrassment and tried to read the contract. However, he found himself struggling to make sense of it.

“Um, could I have a moment, please?”

He retrieved the magnifying glass that Alistair had provided him the previous evening from the bedside table and began to examine the text.
