Chapter 3-Slime King
The two stood out in the open fields outside of the town where they had just accepted the quest from. There was a nest of goblins in sight a little ways away.
They might have a problem though. Because they were wizards, naturally, they specialized in long-range attacks, which meant that had to kill their enemies before they got too close.
“We should’ve thought this through,” Kiyomi groaned. She too realized now.
Having a frontliner like a warrior or tank would be convenient. But because they didn’t have one, taking damage was unavoidable. Their slow cast times only made it worse. And they weren’t strong enough to one-shot anything yet. But their cast times should improve as they levelled at least.
Sako swiped the air, opening her UI to look at her stats:

“Why are some of my stats so high? Is this normal for a wizard?”
Kiyomi looked at her to examine her stats. Surprise and wonder struck her. “Oh. You’re great at martial arts, aren’t you?”
Sako thought for a moment, going back to some memories. She had won many tournaments against other schools regardless of who she went up against and despite being just a high school girl. It had been an extraordinary talent. “Good point.” Instead of using magic spells for now, she would try her bare hands, just to see how well her skills would match up against monsters. Daunting, but she was confident.
She tossed her staff aside. Before it hit the ground, it vanished, returning to her inventory. She didn’t need to hold back either: these weren’t people. “Ready?”
“Ready,” Kiyomi replied, holding her staff out, ready for their assault. She glowed with a blue aura.
Sako charged forward and threw the first punch to the first goblin she had her eyes on. Her punch knocked its head off clean. It landed on the grass. She looked down at her bloodied fist and screamed. “EW, EW, EW, EW, EW!” It had some green sludge on it mixed in with the blood. So disgusting. She changed her mind. She didn’t want this. With her clean hand in the air, her staff appeared in her grasp. She needed to wash her hand off right now, but she had no water. They needed to end this quickly so she could go back to town and wash herself in a nice, long bath.
The goblins, now angry, rushed at her.
She ran away.
They chased her.
“SOME HELP WOULD BE NICE RIGHT NOW, KIYOMI!” Sako ran around trees, then in a wide circle, then around rocks, then around more trees…
“What a pussy.” Kiyomi sighed, unsurprised. She watched the whole ordeal for a good while. Since Sako had her hands full, she couldn’t fire any spells, so it was up to Kiyomi. She pointed her staff at all of them including Sako. A black magic circle appeared before Kiyomi. “Shadow Barrage!” Little, black orbs flew from the circle and knocked a few goblins down, but there were still too many.
Sako headed straight for the forest, still managing to keep a good distance between her and the horde. The goblins followed.
Kiyomi ran after them. “Idiot! Not that way!”
She heard but didn’t have a choice but to keep going. No matter what route she took, they would follow.
They ended up in a glade with Kiyomi far behind.
When Sako reached the center of the clearing, she stopped, but unlike the goblins, she wasn’t panting. She felt like she could keep going, except she realized her mistake: slimes began poking out from behind the surrounding trees.
A huge, green ball fell from the sky and landed in front of her and the goblins.
Sako glanced at its HP bar above its head.
Slime King, Level 20
HP: 10 000 |
MP: 5000 |
Not good… Physical attacks wouldn’t work very well against it, according to the starter guide.
The goblins stepped away slowly, about to run back out of the forest. But as they turned their backs to run, dozens of tentacles shot out of the slime and wrapped around each of them. The tentacles flung them around the forest while they screamed. And once they landed on their backs and heads, the smaller slimes bounced towards them and easily overpowered them with their large numbers, hitting them relentlessly everywhere until they either died or passed out.
While the slime was busy with the goblins, she turned her back and sprinted she across the glade to where she had come from.
A tentacle swung around the glade horizontally, heading to her, but she ducked just in time for it to pass overhead. Its agility was 40, so she would be fine evading the attacks.
She stopped, having an idea. Slimes were weak to fire. Pointing her staff at it, she started a spell. “Drown in fire and be purged, white flames of Cention!” A cone of fire rushed from the staff and hit it, but the spell’s power was nowhere near enough.
The slime’s body absorbed it. It bounced towards her.
Sako ran away and reached the trees, speeding through the path and leaving it behind. It wouldn’t be able to fit through the trees, so she was safe.
Kiyomi came into sight.
“TURN BACK! TURN BACK NOW!”
“What? What did you see?!”
“BIG SLIME. SMALL SLIMES. GOBLINS GONE! YUCKY SLIME TENTACLES!”
With a look of surprise, Kiyomi turned back and ran alongside her, and they eventually made it out of the forest. By the time they came out, she was panting. Sako still wasn’t panting.
“Maybe we should look for more goblins somewhere else?” Sako asked.
“Yeah…” She spoke between pants. “They’d all laugh at us… if we went back with nothing.”
