STORIES OF BROKEN MIRRORS

ANGEL

Manuel, at the age of 3, saw an angel, and his parents didn’t believe him. That was obvious, I mean his parents' disbelief, not the angel. His parents never believed a word he said; after all, he was just a child, so why believe a child?

I remember once they took him to a psychiatrist because Manuel spent so much time with the angel. They had conversations, simple for a small child; nevertheless, they were conversations. He talked about that with the psychiatrist, about what they talked about.

The child told him everything. He said that the angel told him that God loved him and would never leave him alone no matter what happened, that he would always help and take care of him. He told him to respect his elders and be honest, kind, and generous. The child, of course, obeyed.

In the end, the psychiatrist said nothing was wrong with him and that he simply had a good imagination. I always thought that psychiatrist was terrible at his job and even told his parents that, but they were satisfied, so I didn’t interfere anymore.

Another time, I was told that something horrible had happened to Manuel. At first, I thought the angel’s voice had told him to jump off a bridge or something like that; however, they told me that the angel existed. Well, actually, they told me that it was a demon with him.

They told me he was up a tree trying to pick an apple, slipped, fell… But didn’t hit the ground. From that moment, his parents believed, but not what he said, rather what they wanted to believe: A demon.

They contacted many people to get rid of the demon, so many that I can’t remember who they were, no one succeeded. The child insisted; but, his parents didn’t listen, after all, he was just a child, so why believe a child?

There were people who started experimenting on him. I remember once they tried to cut off his hand… the knife broke! They tried to hit him… they felt the pain! They insulted him… he seemed not to hear. His parents also tried to deprive him of food and drink for several days… he never felt hungry or thirsty! They locked him up for months, and the child, when he wanted to leave, appeared outside the place where he was held. Several government people decided to lock him in his house and destroy it with explosives… His parents didn’t object… I hope by this point you know what happened in the end.

Finally, after countless horrific experiments… the child remained as happy as ever!

No one ever knew what was happening with Manuel, and they never will, but today he is still happy because of the angel who watches over him. He doesn’t need anyone else.
