Chapter 182: Chapter 183: Rangiku Matsumoto
With Unohana increasingly stepping away from hands-on management, and with Makoto's growing influence within the Fourth Division, implementing this initiative proved to be almost effortless.
To lead by example, Makoto even personally took on the seemingly impossible task of mentoring Hanataro, a recruit who appeared to be quite challenging to teach, setting an example for others.
As a result, the rest of the Fourth Division had no room to object.
To ensure fairness, Makoto implemented a lottery system, assigning each Fourth Division member a new recruit to mentor.
He also established a series of evaluation metrics and learning progress benchmarks for these "newbies," incorporating corresponding rewards and penalties for their mentors.
Under Makoto's guidance, which carried remnants of a modern, systematic mindset, the efficiency of the Fourth Division's operations noticeably improved—albeit with a hint of ruthless exploitation.
This arrangement left Unohana satisfied, Makoto at ease, and the Fourth Division bustling with fresh energy and activity.

With the Fourth Division now back on track, and the new term at Shin'o Academy approaching, Makoto happened to encounter Aizen and Gin in the Seireitei.
In just a few months, Ichimaru Gin had risen to Third Seat of the Fifth Division.
As for the original Third Seat of the Fifth Division? Deceased. Devoured by a Hollow, leaving not even a corpse behind. Witnesses included Vice-Captain Aizen and over a dozen squad members.
It was during this chance meeting that Makoto remembered something rather important—Matsumoto Rangiku.
Previously, Gin had lived with Rangiku in Rukongai.
Now, with Gin firmly entrenched by Aizen's side, he had little opportunity to interact with, let alone care for, Rangiku.
This thought spurred Makoto to hasten towards Rukongai.
However, upon arriving at Gin and Rangiku's former residence, he found no trace of her. The dilapidated house appeared abandoned for months.
"Where is she?"
A chill ran down Makoto's spine.
That orange-haired little girl… she hadn't been forced into a goldfish-scooping gig, had she?
Though Gin had never explicitly asked Makoto to look after Rangiku, and had even seemed to intentionally distance himself from her after joining the academy, Makoto couldn't help but worry about her well-being.
After all, Rukongai was far from peaceful.
On the contrary, the farther one ventured into its remote districts, the more chaotic it became—a dangerous place for a small, defenseless girl.
Makoto scoured the area, questioning locals, but the responses were consistent: no one had seen Rangiku in months.
Finding a specific person in the vast expanse of Rukongai was proving to be an almost insurmountable task.
This reminded Makoto of an idea he'd once toyed with: tracking down future Captains and Vice-Captains from the original timeline and nurturing them ahead of time.
But in reality, Rukongai was simply too vast for such plans to be feasible.
Fortunately, Makoto had left a "Seeds of the Forest" inside Rangiku. Guided by its presence, he made his way towards the nearest "seed" in Rukongai.
Unfortunately, it wasn't Rangiku.
Instead, it was Ōmaeda Marechiyo, cradling a plump, adorable infant while strolling through Rukongai, surrounded by a retinue of guards.
The moment Marechiyo spotted Makoto, he reflexively clamped his legs together and vanished in an impressive burst of Shunpo, infant in tow.
His guards, momentarily stunned, quickly scrambled to catch up.
"Young Master, wait for us!"
"Young Master, what's wrong?"
"Is there an enemy?"
Makoto watched the scene unfold, his lips twitching in exasperation.
Was Marechiyo really that terrified of him?
All Makoto had done was perform two surgeries on him and, at the request of Marechiyo's father, implement a few minor enhancements.
Makoto prided himself on the quality of his work—flawless procedures with excellent results.
"Sigh, the state of doctor-patient relationships these days…" Makoto muttered, shaking his head as he headed towards another "Seeds of the Forest" location.
Eventually, after several more searches, he found Rangiku.
She was huddled beneath a vendor's table, her tattered clothes and disheveled appearance betraying her desperate circumstances.
From the look in her eyes, it was clear Rangiku had been starving for quite some time.
Her gaze, filled with both longing and tension, fixated on the food above. She nervously swallowed her saliva while cautiously observing the vendor's movements, waiting for the right moment.
Finally, a bun fell to the ground, unnoticed by the vendor in his rush.
Rangiku's body tensed with anticipation as she reached out for the bun, her small hand trembling.
But just as she was about to grasp it, her wrist was gently caught.
Rangiku froze, her entire body stiffening in fear of the reprimand she expected to hear.
Instead, a soft, kind voice spoke.
"Rangiku, that bun is dirty. Let me buy you something else to eat."
