Chapter 179: Chapter 180: Gin's Self-Sacrifice
An inexplicable doubt flickered in Makoto's heart.
Based on what Makoto knew about Gin, Gin's choice would undoubtedly be Aizen.
Over the past year, Gin had thrown himself into relentless training and graduated in record time, all with the apparent goal of proving his worth to Aizen.
Still, even if Gin had truly changed his mind, Makoto wouldn't feel regret.
With Gin's talents, serving as a mere undercover agent for Aizen seemed like a waste.
Aware that Aizen already knew about his connection with Gin, Makoto didn't intentionally distance himself. Instead, he greeted Gin warmly and amiably.
"Long time no see, Gin..."
Yet, faced with Makoto's greeting, Gin slightly raised his eyelids, resembling a serpent slowly baring its fangs. His tone was venomous as he said:
"Senju Makoto, oh ho ho, don't pretend to be so virtuous in front of me. Ever since you subjected me to that humiliating treatment in Rukongai, I swore I'd kill you one day."
For a moment, Gin's words caused a stunned silence among the onlookers.
No one had expected Gin to openly challenge the rising star, Senju Makoto, in such a setting. His undisguised hatred and hostility caught everyone off guard.
The next second, Isane, who had always seemed timid and deferential in front of Makoto, suddenly stood up. She placed herself in front of him, glaring angrily at Gin.
"Ichimaru Gin, watch your words! Do you even know what you're saying?"
Soon after, many of the bystanders, especially those who had been won over by Makoto's charisma, began criticizing Gin.
Given Gin's status as a special case of early graduation, his unparalleled talent and aloof personality had already sparked jealousy and resentment at the Shin'ō Academy.
"How arrogant! Do you think you can challenge Lord Senju?"
"Apologize to Vice-Captain Senju immediately!"
"Damn it, that Ichimaru Gin is way too cocky!"
However, Gin ignored the rebukes as if they were nonexistent. His gaze swept over Isane briefly before settling back on Makoto.
"Don't think I don't see through your schemes. You're only trying to placate me because you fear my revenge and my abilities. Isn't that right, Senju Makoto?"
Makoto furrowed his brows and gently patted Isane's shoulder, signaling her to sit down. Then, he calmly said:
"Gin, I don't know what misunderstandings have arisen between us. But whether it was the treatment back then or our interactions afterward, I've always considered you a friend."
Gin's fingers, hidden in his sleeve and fiddling with a bracelet, suddenly trembled. Yet his gaze grew colder, and his tone was filled with disdain.
"Hmph. Do you think I'd believe that? Someday, I'll make you understand what a mistake it was to underestimate me."
"Gin, you—"
Makoto started to speak, but Gin didn't give him a chance to continue.
Before he could finish, Gin turned sharply on his heel and walked away. His steps took him towards Aizen, as if his actions had been purely to spite Makoto.
First, he mocked Makoto; then, in front of him, he joined another division, blatantly expressing his disdain.
Before Aizen, Gin resumed his usual inscrutable, cold demeanor and calmly said, "Vice-Captain Aizen, I'd like to apply to join the Fifth Division."
Aizen glanced apologetically at Makoto before responding with his characteristic humility.
"My apologies, Makoto-kun. The Fifth Division is in need of some reinforcements right now. I'll make sure to educate Gin thoroughly afterward and bring him to apologize to you."
Makoto sighed helplessly and said, "Then I'll trouble you, Vice-Captain Aizen. Gin and I seem to have some misunderstandings. If possible, I'll visit you later to explain."
He paused briefly before adding, "Gin is actually a good kid, though his thoughts can be a bit extreme. I hope Vice-Captain Aizen can be patient with him."
This series of exchanges only served to highlight Makoto's gentle and noble demeanor.
Conversely, Gin, long renowned as a genius, appeared narrow-minded. Even his reasons for harboring a grudge against Makoto seemed trivial.
For the audience of graduates and division representatives, Makoto's image became even more admirable.
Even when faced with open hostility, he remained composed, patient, and kind, going so far as to ask others to look after Gin.
Some of the more sentimental graduates were moved to tears, immersing themselves in the narrative of Makoto's gentle nature.
Following Gin's choice of division, the selection process for other graduates began.
Unlike previous years, the number of graduates flocking to the Fourth Division surged tenfold.
Isane couldn't help but feel uneasy—over 90% of these graduates were women.
What's more, their eyes were fixated on Makoto with an intensity that Isane found disturbingly familiar.
Were they here for the Fourth Division? No way. These people were clearly here for Vice-Captain Senju!
"Am I… going to be overshadowed by the younger generation?"
The thought filled Isane with urgency.
Even if these juniors were only one year younger, they still represented youthful energy and vitality.
If she didn't step up her game, her position in Makoto's side could be in jeopardy.
Yet, Makoto didn't seem interested in the crowd of female graduates swarming him. His gaze lingered in the direction Gin had left, sensing the unease and guilt hidden in Gin's restless movements.
Makoto knew full well that Gin's performance just now was a deliberate act to sever ties with him—likely to prevent Aizen from targeting Makoto.
"Tch, Gin's self-sacrificing tendencies really haven't changed…"
Though annoyed, Makoto couldn't help but feel a touch of warmth towards Gin's actions.
