She Who Became Immortal

Chapter 100: Home Sweet Home

To me, Euphemia Grimwood, the story told by the fox beastwoman Kairine with her nine black tails is not something I wish to detail extensively.

It's not that I dislike Kairine. I don't particularly like her either or her androgynous nature, but there's no burning hatred between us. It's simply a matter of disliking her outward personality. Maybe if I delved deeper, I might find something to like, but for now, my curiosity is near zero.

So, I'll summarize.

Once, under the orders of Beast King Randall, the fox beastmen were disbanded. Kairine was among them, but unlike Serena, who settled where she was told, Kairine chose not to stay put.

What did she do instead? Kairine wandered.

She journeyed north from the beastmen's territory into the demon forested lands, but did not head towards the demon clan’s domain. Instead, she moved deeper into the demon lands, where the forest-dwelling Aelvs people resided.

Kairine believed that the existence of the "Nine-Tailed Fox" should be erased from the beastmen's domain until things cooled down. From the moment she was exiled, she had revenge on her mind, but she was able to control this desire. That was the kind of fox beastwoman Kairine was.

By the way, from what I gathered, the Aelvs are similar to the elves often depicted in fantasy fiction.

These forest dwellers did not fiercely reject the suspicious fox beastwoman who suddenly appeared. They did not welcome her, but there was some level of communication. Kairine was not invited into their settlements, but they did not stop her from camping in the forest simply due to her being a woman.

According to Kairine, "Even if you are a woman; if you have brains, will and can communicate, you can find a place even in enemy territory."

With her personality and abilities, she piqued the Aelvs’s interest. Though never liked, Kairine spent roughly ten years wandering through the Aelvs’s territory, gathering their stories.

It was a long time. Yet, it did not quell her desire for revenge. While Serena was busy raising Kirina and had reduced Randall to a mere thorn in her side, Kairine’s feelings remained unchanged.

Time passed.

The Aelvs, with their long lifespans—said to be as long as or longer than the demon race's—might not have seen it as a long time, but objectively, it was significant.

The commotion had settled. Her vengeance had not.

Thus, Kairine decided to return to the beastmen’s domain. When she informed the chief of the Aelvs settlement she was staying at, the chief—who looked like he was in his twenties despite being over two hundred—gave her something.

"I never liked your personality and chatter, but your intellect and mysticism intrigued me. This is your reward."

What the Aelvs chief handed Kairine was a ‘secret gemstone,’ a treasure among the Aelvs. Kairine knew it was highly valuable by human standards.

And so.

When Kairine returned to the beastmen’s domain after all those years, she found, as expected, "beastmen with animosity towards the Beast King" quite easily. Led by the four great werewolf clans, they were everywhere if one looked closely.

However, Kairine wasn’t the type to lead them as their head. She lacked the qualities for it and a foxwoman to begin with. She was acutely aware of her incapacity to lead a group.

Therefore, she chose to act as an advisor to the werewolf clans like Lex is to the Beast King, guiding them subtly and they knew how valuable intelligence is.

Just as she had endured her own anger, she advised the werewolf beastmen to bide their time, for lashing out randomly would not reach Randall.

As a result, the "Anti-Lion Coalition" or others called it, the "Anti-Lion Alliance", grew according to Kairine’s plans. Interestingly, it overlapped with the schemes of the lioness, Lex Asuka.

Lex reached out to Kairine through a messenger, and though they were suspicious of each other, they acknowledged their common goal. Both wanted Beast King Randall dead. Their objectives aligned.

Yet, mere schemes weren’t enough.

They needed something more—a shield to block the Beast King’s claws, even if just once, to deliver their fangs.

“The humans have no interest in the beastmen’s domain. The beastmen have no interest in the human territories. So, despite being able to travel back and forth with just a little effort, there’s no interaction between them. Indeed, that’s the big picture,” Kairine said with a sly grin.

She continued, “But what if we look closer? There are bound to be beastmen curious about the human domain, and humans intrigued by the beastmen’s lands. Such individuals must exist.”

She had a point. Whether or not people in this world understood concepts like macro and micro, there were undoubtedly those who grasped it intuitively. If there was truly no interaction, no one would know that the human domain lay beyond the western forest of the beastmen’s territory.

So, there must be individuals on a smaller scale who are curious. This was Kairine’s belief, and she was right.

There were humans watching the beastmen’s domain. Kairine made contact with them and skillfully piqued their interest. After all, they were curious about the beastmen’s lands and had many questions. Once they learned more, it became clear that Beast King Randall was an obstacle.

For Kairine, the identity of the humans she contacted didn’t matter much. She knew little about the human domain. It didn’t matter which noble of the Louisse Kingdom held what titles; such details were meaningless and unreliable.

Thus, the pragmatic nine-tailed fox bartered the ‘secret gemstone’ she received from the Aelvs for armor suitable for the werewolf beastmen. She was certain she was being swindled, but it didn’t bother her in the slightest.

If it allowed her to sink her fangs into Randall, it was a small price to pay.

“This is my story... not very interesting, I’m afraid. Even I think so,” Kairine said with a laugh, though stories are not just about following the plot.

However, saying “the important thing is the feelings” was not something I wanted to endorse. Those who act solely on feelings often ignore the feelings of others. If someone asked me how I felt, I would just give them my best Euphemia smile and end the conversation.

In any case, the plot was clear.

It truly was a dull story.

Ten days of traveling across the plains by carriage had passed.

Finally, the familiar demon lands of Grimoire came into view. Surprisingly, a sense of nostalgia washed over me.

Even though there should be no place for ‘me’ in this world.

Yet, there were those who met Euphemia Grimwood and came together through various events.

I often forget, given my overwhelming beauty—of course, that’s a joke—but within Euphemia Grimwood lies the memories of a middle-aged man from modern one-world-country, Global Earth.

Of course, there are also the memories of living as the unbearably cute Euphemia "Cutest" Grimwood born into this world. Both sets of memories are mine, so if asked who I am, I can only answer that I am Euphemia Grimwood. Those who knew me before wouldn’t easily accept this.

Not that I need their acceptance.

Because those who know only the current me acknowledge me.

I must admit it. They adore me very much.

To think being too cute is so hard, I guess...

“Lady Euphemia!”

From the horizon, a voice called out as a massive orc, over two meters tall, ran towards us. His joyful expression and voice lifted my spirits.

This orc wasn’t extraordinarily strong, so he was exhausted by the time he reached our carriage.

“Who’s this guy?” asked Zonda Pauga, the new boar beastman, eyeing the tired orc suspiciously. But explanations could wait.

I hopped off the carriage and gave my brightest Euphemia smile.

The orc’s face lit up as he saw me, his expression radiant with joy.

“Thank you for welcoming me back. I feel like it’s been ages, but it’s only been about two months. How are things here, Montego?” I asked.

“No problems at all, Lady Euphemia,” Montego replied with a beaming smile. After catching his breath, he knelt before me.

Understanding his intention, I decided to take a break from the carriage and settled my cute self on Montego’s large shoulder. Despite his earlier exhaustion, Montego stood up proudly and addressed the onlookers with a broad smile.

“Everyone, welcome back Lady Euphemia!”
