Chapter 26: Hunting monsters

Sara stared blankly at the nearby wall. 'What is the real problem?' After pondering for a long time over this question, she left the area, her destination unknown.

'I need to complete the system upgrade mission as fast as possible. If there is a power-up potion level one, there surely must be a level two as well. Hopefully, I'll be able to unlock it after the system evolves,' thought Gorn while running on air towards his home. His next actions were evident: hunting monsters.

"Nine hundred and eighty-four creatures to go...."

Gorn sighed, the task wasn't easy at all, provided that the details of the mission specified that the creatures killed had to have a power level of a minimum of five hundred to make the count. While the mission wasn't easy, it wasn't that hard at the same time if he took his sweet time, and hunted with extreme care without taking any risks. Unfortunately, he was a little pressed for time.

'I must be careful not to trade speed for risks too high to handle.'

More power would allow him to dictate some rules, and a direction that he wanted the city to go into, but to do that he had to be alive after all. Gorn slowly landed on a nearby branch. The sky was crystal clear, allowing him to see a great distance away. Unlike his first day, he could now plainly see what creatures flew high in the sky.

Some of them were unknown types of birds, some looked like dragons, while some had very peculiar forms, bringing a wave of terror to whoever saw them in more detail. Their size varied, but some of them were simply gigantic, thus making it possible to spot them even though they flew at an altitude of dozens of kilometers.

Compared to them, Gorn looked like nothing while moving around at a height of no more than a few kilometers. At first, he was afraid not to attract the attention of such monsters, but now he realized that such worries were unfounded. His existence was too small to even be noticed by such leviathans. Moving his gaze from the distant sky, Gorn looked at what was closer to the ground.

"How beautiful!"

Even though he had been in such a place for quite some time already, the beauty of the place still managed to reach him. What he appreciated was how everything in the higher part of the city was built, and arranged to be in harmony with the surrounding nature.

'The more I look, the more I come to think that the architecture of this place might be superior to what I saw and knew before coming here,' thought Gorn while peacefully taking in a mouthful of air.

After a few more minutes, he went towards his house. Gorn didn't want to delay his hunt any further, but he wanted to notify everyone that he was leaving for some time, as well as buy some utilities he deemed necessary for the trip. In a short time, he reached his place. Entering, he didn't see or hear anyone.

'Where is everyone?'

For a split second, he thought that something bad might have happened. Blinking a few times, he stopped at an altitude of around one thousand meters. Like a hawk, Gorn scanned the area with the help of his enhanced sight. In a matter of minutes, he found everyone. They were at the base of a nearby tree that had no houses built on it and was fairly out of everyone's way. The perfect place to train.

Gorn walked towards them. Everyone was trying their best at training. Everyone except Ella, who from time to time did her own personal training by jumping from place to place while laughing with great gusto.

"Big brother?!" suddenly yelled Ella then masterfully ran up the tree, and propelled herself towards him.

Gorn caught her in his arms: "I'm glad that at least someone is enjoying the training."

The other girls peered at Gorn while being in a daze. Seeing someone floating in the air like it was nothing wasn't something one usually saw every day. Gorn came down upon noticing their reaction. Putting Ella down, he said: "It's good to see you all trying your best to get better."

Rebeca ran towards him with great excitement: "What was that? Can I learn as well to float in the air like that?"

The words came from her mouth almost automatically. Gorn grinned. "Who knows, maybe it will be possible in the future."

"Really?! How far into the future are we talking about?"

Gorn looked at her innocent face, a little annoyed nonetheless. "Enough with the questions. I came here to tell you that I have some business outside the city, and will leave in a few hours at most."

Rebeca was disappointed that he wasn't in the mood to talk but forced herself to stop questioning him.

"Can I come with you?" asked Ella from the side. She was serious, judging by the expression on her face.

The twins came to Ella's side and said: "Why would you want to do that? There are big monsters outside that like to eat little girls the most..."

"Really?" asked Ella, her decision to go immediately wavering.

"Enough!" exclaimed Elisa. "How long do you plan to stay this time?" Sweat was still dripping from her forehead from the intense training.

"What I want to do will take some time. I plan, however, to come back to the city once a month to sell certain stuff and check your situation."

"I understand. We will also try our best to improve in the meantime," said Elisa while looking at her daughters. Her gaze made them feel a little uncomfortable. It was like a premonition of the hard days of training that were to come.

Gorn talked to them for a dozen minutes or so. They established some simple rules to follow in case something went wrong. Under everyone's astonished gaze, Gorn blinked out. At this point, it was slowly becoming his second nature to use this particular skill. For the next few hours, he went shopping for simple, miscellaneous items he deemed as useful. After finishing doing that, he departed towards the vast wilderness beyond the city walls. Landing on a tree a few kilometers outside the city perimeter, Gorn looked at the distant mountains with excitement in his eyes.

"Let the hunt begin!"
