Interlude - The Tidecaller
Kody Ekart had spent a lot of his adult life on the water. When the bombs hit that is exactly where he was. He was working off the coast in Washington State.
He had received his path choices like everyone else and the only one that he could go with was Tidecaller. It gave him what looked like was power over water not controlled by someone else's aether. He didn't know what that shit was. It was all overly nerdy which was something his older brother and his eldest brother were into.
When the EMP went out it knocked the power and signal out of everything including the boat, so he got a crash course in how his abilities worked.
When the power was cut to the boat everything went still for a moment then it went to hell. A rogue wave came out of nowhere and slammed the boat capsizing it. Kody wasn't afraid as every fisherman prepares for if this happens and he was no different. The water was coming in and his captain Gary was down below and coming up. "What the absolute fuck just happened?!" He yelled at Kody who looked at him. "Well, if you look around it would seem that we got smacked by something and turned upside down." he responded with as much annoyed sarcasm as he could muster. Kody getting back to his feet in spite of the boat not having any of its normal stability especially with water pouring in from the side where the wave hit breaking windows. He crawled his way over to the door they always kept open where water was flowing it. He swam under and came up to the surface. He crawled up the back of the boat and sat on top with a resigned smirk that his entire family has known him for when everything has gone to shit and looked around.
He had this idea in his head he couldn't shake and a comfortability with the water he never knew until he picked his path. He used that knowledge and lifted his hand causing water to come up almost like a tentacle. It was at this Gary came up out of the water with a couple life vests, a beacon that wasn't working, a jug of water and a bunch of glow sticks.
"None of this shit works." He said looking up at Kody. "That sucks." Kody said with a laugh. "I think I might have an option for us though. Want your boat back?"
Gary looked at him with an annoyed confused look. Kody kicked his boots and overalls off and dove back into the water. He swam back up toward the glow sticks. Kody could sense everything around him with the water somehow and he thought it was due to the third skill he had called Fluid Sense. He grabbed hold of more water than before and shoved up on the boat. He immediately got lightheaded and drowsy, but the boat flipped back upright but still had a lot of water in it. It was floating and low in the water, but it was better than nothing. Kody floated a bit, completely exhausted after whatever he just did. It felt like he did a week of fishing straight with no breaks and no sleep.
With a little more effort, he managed to swim back to the boat and crawl with the captain grabbing him by the belt loops. "How....the fuck.... did that happen?" Kody was asked. "Didn't you see that blue screen that popped up?" Kody asked slightly slurring his words from exhaustion. "Yeah, I saw it. It wouldn't leave so I picked Fisherman. It said it was a profession that allows me to catch better fish and gave me something called skills for casting, current reading and other weird shit." Gary said.
"My brother, the one in the Army, used to talk about books like this. I thought it was interesting, but never really got into it. I sure feel like a jackass now. He probably knows what is going on if anyone does." Kody said.
"Slowly looking around Kody continued. If you give me a while to catch my breath, I might be able to do something about this water and get us back maybe using that same trick I did to flip this bitch. If we get back to shore, I can check for anything to communicate with and see if we can get news."
Gary looked around exasperated.
"What the hell am I going to do about this?! Do what you need to do."
