Interlude: Brittanie
Brittanie's world was ripped apart before her eyes. She had always listened to the intellectual ramblings of her husband concerning weapons of mass destruction. Most of the time she felt like a smiling gecko just happy to have things shared with her because it made her happy to see him so passionate about something. He never seemed to get the recognition she felt he deserved, but he tried to tell her it never bothered him. He's a terrible liar though. He could never lie to her which helped contribute to the success of their relationship. Since day one Sorin had been overly affectionate and crazy about her even when it became far too much and overwhelmed her where she had to politely tell him to go do something. The thing is, that much love and devotion came with many benefits; one such is the absolute fury he could rain down around her if she was uncomfortable, upset, or heaven help anything... afraid. She was afraid now and for the first time in over a decade she was very afraid. All phones were dead. The blast she knew was a nuclear blast had rocked the entire area and ripped things to pieces. Luckily she was far enough away that their house was shielded for the most part. Her husband kept his issued equipment in the house and always had what he called "a bug out bag." She had arms, ammo, food, water, clothing, and other essential supplies. She just didn't know where Sorin was or if he survived, but she had Kyrain to worry about and ensure he survived. If anyone could survive this it was Sorin. She had faith that he would find her so all she needed to do was survive.
She had just gotten groceries and they had MREs in case of emergency. The power was out and she expected permanently due to what Sorin called an EMP that fried all electronics.
A loud knocking came at the door causing Brittanie to grab the AR-15 they kept for emergencies just like this. Her husband always had a healthy paranoia and taught her to use it.
She checked the chamber, tapped the forward assist, and safety. She looked through the door peep hole and saw it was her neighbor. An older lady who didn't get around easily but she was very afraid. Brittanie opened the door.
"What is going on?!" Her neighbor Carla asked terror all over her face and in her voice.
"We got attacked. I don't know where Sorin is, but if anyone survived it would be him and hopefully he finds us quickly."
Ky came around the corner. "Did you hear from dad?" He seemed very unsure but didn't understand the gravity of all that was happening around him. All he knew is dad would always fix everything and make anything that scared him go away.
"Not yet." Brit said to Ky bringing him close as she motioned for Carla to come in and make herself comfortable all things considered.
"We should wait and see what is said around us. If we got slammed in this small town it's probably worse in the bigger locations. It finally happened. DC got us all killed either through their scheming pissing off other countries or they decided to turn weapons of mass destruction on the people again. They tried bioweapons a few times so it wouldn't suprise me if they just said "screw it! Nuke em."
Carla nodded. Nobody in the neighborhood was a fan of the US government. The politics became more and more corrupt, taxes were increased. It didn't matter if you were left or right you were suffering under DC. Sorin had already been sent down to Texas where he ended up being demoted due to "insubordination" for refusing to take someone's property without due process. Ever since the US government removed posse comitatus and the other laws prohibiting federal troop use on US soil they have been putting troops everywhere. The older more experienced troops resisted the unlawful orders coming down and they have been getting demoted and processed out of the military, some even jailed. They can't even appeal it and nobody can resist the government ever since they revamped the Supreme Court making it an elected position and setting term limits. The justices were now bought and paid for like every other politician all of this seeming to lead to this attack and the confusion wondering if the government had attacked its own people or was it another nation. The longer the two ladies talked and discussed they were beginning to think it was the government. Russia and China still didn't want to destabilize the world markets last they knew and didn't want the mutually assured destruction of the world.
Brittanie had some back up fuel based heat sources that Sorin insisted in having much to her earlier annoyance and now gratitude and began cooking dinner for the three of them.
As she began serving that is when the message popped up in front of her.
