Chapter 22 - Final Exam
Eclipse and Kyrain traveled across the lower states hitting the Carolina's then they shot north until they reached Marine Corps base Quantico where the FBI used to be trained until it was dissolved and reformed into the Hunters by former President Hogan toward the end of his second term.
During that time they managed to apprehend a couple more targets similarly to the first one. Eclipse was smooth in her captures and with Kyrain locking them down it was even easier for her.
He was given a barracks room to stay at while he attended the required courses for Hunting. It didn't take long to get used to his mask. Most days, he didn't even remember it was there unless he saw his reflection and it startled him.
Kyrain was not thrilled about more classes and training. He still trudged through them starting with criminal law, but not the same as what the police dealt with. It was more constitutional law with the final amendments created after the development of paths and the hunter program which allowed for dead or alive contracts to be created through strict court ordered guidelines.
One class was about practical applications of the masks which were the same as Eclipse showed him, save for the built in flash light that Kyrain didn't need nor care for.
Kyrain went through use of force classes and scenarios daily to make sure that he didn't get himself in trouble with the law or worse through improper use of deadly force, but also helping to prepare for when that force is required. It was so difficult and was glad he wasn't an actual police officer who had it much harder and dealt with that scenario way more than Kyrain would have to.
His next month was taken up by classes in scenarios and tracking with how to analyze behavior of people using programs developed by Gavin De Becker. In other classes, he was shown different practices used in the past and even currently by people to move substances, weapons, and even people.
The exams were a sinch now that his mind was tier 5 and could remember everything with complete clarity. Finally he got to the end of the course where the practical application came in.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, each of you have done exceptionally within this course and now we have come to our final exam. It is a practical examination with a deadline of a month. Each of you will be given a file of a target. You will track this target and capture them ALIVE. All information will come from the packet you are about to recieve. Your targets were specifically chosen based on your strength and path." The instructor said as his aids began handing packets out to each of them.
Kyrain got his packet, but before he could open it the instructor spoke again. "Your sponsors and trainers will be accompanying you on this hunt. They will not be helping you in the hunt, but grading you and in extreme cases, step in to keep you safe." He said.
"At this time, you may begin your hunts. Your final grades will be tallied by your sponsors. Oh...and if you think you're going to be cut some slack by your trainers/sponsers, think again. Their reputation and progression depends on pushing the best candidates forward. If they push a garbage candidate through, they will suffer just as much. It's in their best interest to grade you harshly." He said as he walked out.
Kyrain saw Eclipse step out from a shadow as if she had been standing there the whole time.
He got up and was about to open his packet up when she grabbed it. "Not here." She said and motioned him out of the room and to a small private briefing room.
"Now you can open it. Sharing a hunt with another hunter that isn't contracted with you can lead to them making the capture or kill before you, thus getting them the reward." She explained.
Kyrain hadn't been told that in the classes. "That seems rather cut throat." He said.
"It is competitive. You are not to share assignments with others unless you contract with them in writing and backed by the Program." She said gesturing toward the packet to begin.
Kyrain opened up the packet and pulled out two documents. The first was a picture and it made Kyrain stare. The most beautiful woman he had ever seen was in this picture.
Blonde almost silver hair, dark blue eyes nearly sapphire blue with not quite pale skin, but light in color.
*snap!* *snap!*
Eclipse snapped her fingers in front of his face. "Come back down lover boy. Do not let yourself be distracted as some paths are mesmer paths. They let you see them as beautiful or even enchanting. This might be the case, because sure she is pretty, but not to the point you should be drooling." She said rolling her eyes where even Kyrain could see them roll.
He pulled the dossier out and began to read.
Warrant of Capture
Name: Nyx Sabel
Status: Alive
Crime: Fellony evasion and general disorder
Bounty: 2 B rank cores
Path: Time Warp
Last known tier: 5
Threat level: 1
Notes: Person of interest's last known address is 582 University Avenue New York City, NY 10001. Little is known about person of interest save for she became a US citizen a year ago and quickly moved up in the ranks of the guild. She has had many altercations with her neighbors and when the officials attempt to address the issue she ignores them, is belligerent with them, and then will flee when detainment is attempted. No violence or threats of violence in any interaction. Extreme flight risk in all situations. Detain first before identifying and questioning or risk losing target as many have had happen.
Kyrain looked up from reading then handed the page to Eclipse who took and read it. After a few minutes she handed it back.
"For this last piece, you will remove your mask. I will be observing you from a distance. You may only reveal that you are a hunter when you attempt to detain and make an arrest.
There may be times you have to blend with society and work as one of them. Sometimes, targets are so good that if they see a mask, they are gone in a second." Eclipse explained as Kyrain slowly went up with a single thumb under his mask. He placed his thumb over the indent and waited five seconds. There was a click and hiss as the mask came away.
"At this point, I will offer no more assistance and will be observing every step." Eclipse said as she dropped flashed brightly and was gone.
Kyrain could have sworn she had a darkness or shadow path.
Kyrain went to work. He pulled out his phone, input the address. It took him to a massive apartment building. He turned on the satellite feature giving him a detailed view of the area at the street view. Honestly, he didn't know if it would even work, but he tore.
He peered through the rift and sure enough, the city of New York was on the other side like the GPS showed. Kyrain stepped through. He looked at building labeled 582 then walked in. There was a directory of rooms for delivery service and he checked the names.
They were listed by last name with the first letter of their first name, but not a single one was Sabel. It wasn't going to be that easy. So it meant he would have to do things differently and be patient.
