Chapter 12 - More than nullification
Kyrain drifted through his following days of school, mind in a haze after he was so thoroughly grounded in reality that he was not near as far as he was in power.
He had been so humbled by three of his closest members of his family which in hindsight he realized embarrassingly, that they were right. It hurt his pride to get crushed like that and he didn't even want to discuss it with anyone even though his cousins, Elijah, as well as others from school when he came back without his usual energy had asked.
He moved into his science class and it was going over theory of time, space, and matter in reference to motion and thermodynamics.
The teacher was talking about the parts that made up an atom when Kyrain raised his hand. The teacher stopped and called on him.
"If matter is made up of nothing but energy or now as the system calls aether, does that mean that time and space is also a form of aether or energy?"
She paused for a moment and thought. "That is the current theory. We know that the system can manipulate time and space so it is thought that they are an aether type." She said.
She continued on down that same line of thought. "There have been experiments done on the rifts of the world as to where the monsters are coming from, and it's believed that the energy from the weapons dropped that it ripped a tear that was never able to heal because so much is pouring through from the other side.
That has led us to believe that aether can, in fact, connect two points of space. So far, nobody we know that has gone through the rifts has ever returned."
This got Kyrain thinking. His path is anti-aether. If time, space, and matter are all aether, can't he affect them?
Kyrain dropped deeply into his aether sense and looked around. He saw his usual where everything was red, light green, blue, brown, but as he looked he saw each mote was actually connected and bound by a black aether. With his aether he reached out next to him and connected those millions of dots of black.
*bleep*
Immediately Kyrain heard and felt a crackle which came accompanied with a startled scream as a rift opened up next to him. Panicking Kyrain used his aether as a cover and blocked it which sealed it and the rift vanished, leaving the entire class looking at him with some shock, some horror, and a lot of curiosity.
"Mr. Ekart! Was that you?!" The teacher asked with a worried tone.
"Yes ma'am! I'm sorry I had no idea that would happen I just had an idea and didn't expect or mean for anything to happen." He replied with a worried tone.
"Do not do that again. You know path use without permission is not allowed within class." She said reprimanding him.
"I'm sorry, I won't do it again." Kyrain replied.
The teacher then worked the next few minutes getting the class back on track trying to continue with the lesson. It was hard because even that small crack let out a pulse of ominous energy that felt like the rift. They were lucky other people within the school didn't rush in.
Kyrain pulled up his notification.
Congratulations!
You have learned the skill:
Rift Walk(a) - This extremely rare skill is known only to exist with the dragons and usually requires a massive amount of aether to perform. With antimatter, the user may tear holes in space and bridge the gap with that same power creating a wormhole between two points the user can see or has been to. The wormhole is as long as a step. Warning: Distance depends on tier. Current max distance: 4000 miles
Note: Tier 10 offers a bonus.
Kyrain eyes went wide. This was a skill shared by dragons. He couldn't believe it. In all honesty, it shouldn't suprise him that dragons were a thing, but this was a transportation power. He didn't have to ride a bus or go anywhere in a vehicle ever again provided he did some testing and mastered the skill.
Kyrain dismissed the notification and pulled up his full HUD.
Name: Kyrain Ekart
Path: Spellbreaker
AP: Null/ AM: 40pps
NOTE: All parameters are based off the flow of antimatter the user can channel per second.
Body: Null/ (T4)
Mind: Null/(T4)
Spirit: Null/(T4)
Skills:
Antimatter Wellspring(p) - A unique skill that allows the user to tap into the beyond and allow antimatter to flow into the user. The larger the tap the more powerful the user becomes.(increase tier)
Antimatter anatomy(p/a) - A unique skill that renders the user's entire being to be created out of antimatter in such a way that it resembles aether. Everything functions as it would as built by aether, but with a flex of the users will they can nullify chosen types of aether around and within them.
Aether sense(p) - A unique skill that allows the use to sense all aether around them. Range grows as new tiers are obtained.
Aether Nullification(a) - A Unique skill that allows the user to use anti-matter to disrupt the flow of aether whether in nature or pertaining to another user. Can be done within close line of sight (15 meters) or through direct contact.
Aetheric Redirection (a) - Unique skill for the user where he encapsulates incoming aether and redirects it. Certain actions with the aether leading to a variety of effects. Caution: If aether exceeds Antimatter PPS you will be unable to contain the target and backlash can occur.
Rift Walk(a) - This extremely rare skill is known only to exist with the dragons and usually requires a massive amount of aether to perform. With antimatter, the user may tear holes in space and bridge the gap with that same power creating a wormhole between two points the user can see or has been to. Wormhole is as long as a step. Kyrain couldn't wait to get out of school, which now seemed to drag by now that he actually had something to do.
As soon as class ended he ran to his locker and got his phone to message his mom.
"Mom! Just learned a new skill. Rift Walking. I can essentially create a path between two points and I can move between the points. My max range according to the system is 4000 miles. Apparently it's tier based and at 10, I get some sort of bonus. Do you know anyone that can help me test this?"
He sent the text and went off to lunch. His mom never had her phone on her except when she had lunch, so it would be at least another hour.
- Brittanie -
She had a rough morning. A team from the front lines had a overly nasty group of monsters come through. They were classified as lesser demons, but they were still horrific.
They went incorporeal and could phase around the team then become solid again and slash at the adventurers with claws infected with a green fire aether that transformed the body into a black withered form. One member couldn't be saved and he became a thrall that fought against his own team with his full physcial tier with the same effects of the claws.
She was able to purify their corrupted body parts and save them with minimal long term effects, but they would definitely be referred to therapy as was the policy for team member loss.
She sat down at her desk, pulling out her lunch from the mini fridge she kept and pulled out her phone. She froze when she read the message from Kyrain.
"Rift walking."
Her heart jumped when she read those words. Could this be the answer to bring Sorin home? Tears started to form in her eyes.
"Besides the distance, are there other restrictions? I will reach out to the Sage. If anyone can help it will be Mr. Shephard. He is teacher and a good friend of your dad if you remember. He would be overjoyed to be able to help."
She didn't have to wait long for a reply.
"Yes. It has to be line of sight or somewhere I have seen or been before. I would like to test this today and have as much information for the Sage as possible. I've heard new stories about him and am extremely excited to see him if we can. If we master this ability I can use this ability to get to him. North Carolina is within my range."
She sent a confirmation reply of thats what they would do then began to eat. Her heart felt much lighter as this could be a plan to get her husband back. She knew she shouldn't get her hopes up, but she couldn't help it. She missed him horribly.
