Rise of the Omnimage

Chapter 10 - First rule of hunting

Kyrain rolled out of bed as his alarm went off.

He was pretty excited for school. It was his junior year and he was hoping it was going to be an awesome time. Before the world changed it was the first year that his dad really came into his own with sports.

Mom on the other hand, for whatever reason, has herself convinced she was an ugly duckling. He disagrees, but he had learned a while ago that when mom gets a thought in her head, there is no changing it.

He got up and got dressed in an outfit he had specially picked out for his first day of school, brand new shoes, new backpack, he was ready. Had to look cool as he went in.

"Kyrain! You're going to miss the bus if you keep moving at your pace!" His mom shouted from the kitchen.

Kyrain frowned. He didn't want to take the bus to school. Nobody looks good getting off of a school bus. He didn't want to run. Even at his current tier it was still far enough that he would show up sweaty and he couldn't have that.

"Mom....can't you just drop me off on the way to work?" He asked.

"No. Your dad and I rode the bus and you will as well." She replied quickly brokering little argument, but Kyrain pressed anyway.

"Mom it's embarrassing to be on the bus. It makes me look poor and lame." He said.

"How much money do you have? Did you buy those clothes, shoes, pack, anything?" His mother snapped back.

Kyrain looked down as he walked into th3 living room not looking into the kitchen realizing he just made a huge mistake.

"No....." He said weakly

"Then you are poor. We have enough in this family and you should be content with the good things we do have. If you want more, then you get more jobs from the guild and earn them."

Kyrain was red in the face from the embarrassing dressing down. Nothing she said was wrong and he knew it, but he was not going to take it laying down. He was 16 years old now and almost a full member of the guild.

"I am taking jobs now mom! I'm almost an adult and shouldn't be reduced to ridding a bus or having to look stupid." He yelled at her.

His mother's green eyes began to switch colors taking on a golden glow and the color of her powers began to leak off of her in anger.

"Kyrain Ekart! I don't care if you are 30 years old. As long you live under this roof and depend on me for clothing and food, you will do what I say when I say. You are beyond lucky your dad isn't here. He would have come across this house and crushed you for this." He snapped back.

"Oh yeah...I've heard that before. Dad this, dad that. He isn't coming back mom, and even if he does, what is he going to do? Nobody can touch me!

Chairs slid back from the kitchen and heavy steps could be heard coming toward the living room.

"You think so?" Came a very familiar voice.

To Kyrain's absolute horror, not just his uncle Mitch came into view, but his uncle Kody both white with fury.

"You want to test your powers for real boy? Ok...after school today, you will come to guild and we will see just how "untouchable" you are." Kody said with a the most evil grin Kyrain had ever seen.

"Sorin always knew this day would come when you got too big for your britches. Extremely unlucky for you to run your mouth with both of us here." Mitchell said.

Brittanie just shook her head. She was nervous for her only son and dreaded what was to come, but knew it had to be done.

"Kyrain, I will also see you at the guild. I'm insanely disappointed the morning went this way. Kody and I both came to check on your dad as your mother is the only one who can see him and we have to deal with this, but so be it. We will see if the little cub actually has grown teeth." Mitch said walking out the door.

Kyrain felt shock and horror at the mess he quickly found himself in. Two of the most powerful people he had ever seen were about to get their pound of flesh out of him.

"You will report to the guild like they said Ky." His mother said. He could see the disappointment and another set of emotions on her face as she walked out of the house.

She poked her head back in. "The bus is almost here."

- a little while later -

"Dude....what happened?" Tobias asked the still very pale Kyrain.

"I screwed up. I didn't want to ride the bus and back-talked my mom. I didn't know Uncle Mitch and Uncle Kody had stopped in when I said what I did." He said.

Tobias's eyes went wide. "Holy crap dude, what did you say?!"

"Well my mom said I was lucky my dad wasn't here because he would have came across the house and dealt with me. I wrote it off, because she keeps saying he is coming back and he never does. I may have also said that I was untouchable anyway." Kyrain said weakly.

Tobias stopped walking, leaving Kyrain moving forward.

"Kyrain....our whole family knows that you are anything but. We know how your abilities work. Why would you even say that?" Tobias asked.

"I don't know man! I was angry and mom was being difficult. Now I have to report to the guild. Both uncles will be there and they said they were going to test if I'm really as untouchable as I said."

If Tobias wasn't surprised before, he was now.

"You are so dead dude. Do you want me to get Seb and go with?" He asked.

"I would be grateful guys. This is the most scared I've ever been in my life. They wont kill me I know that, but Uncle Kody was more pissed off than I've ever seen and I know how close he and my dad were, not to mention Mitchell." Kyrain replied.

Tobias nodded and followed quietly.

Kyrain went through the first day of school in a sort of daze. Luckily it was all welcome back sessions and didn't really mean much, but before he knew it, the final bell sounded and it was time to go to the guild.

He went to the locker room and changed into his adventurer armor then met with hus cousins who waited for him at the guild bus stop.

Kyrain, Tobias, and Sebastian rode the guild bus in silence for the 20 minuted it took to get there.

They got off the bus and headed into the guild itself only to be met by an attendant.

"Mr. Ekart, your reservation is ready for you. Please follow me. Gentlemen, it was said you two would probably come and I have been instructed to request you to wait outside. This is a private reservation with specific personnel."

Kyrain looked back at his two cousins and fist bumped them then followed the attendant. Kyrain wondered if the feelings running through him were what those on death row felt.

The attendant opened the doors and led him in. The training area had been modified with the moat providing thousands of gallons of water all around the edge of the area. The attended moved off to the side and he saw both of his uncles sitting in the chairs off to the side chatting with one another. They stopped as he came in.

"Come here kid!" Kody shouted.

Kyrain not wanting to make things worse, ran over. As he arrived his uncle asked him a very strange question.

"Do you know the first rule of hunting?"

"No sir." Kyrain replied in an uncertain confused tone.

"It's to make sure that you are actually the hunter and not the prey." Kody said.

He pointed to the other side of the training area and to Kyrains complete shock, his mother came walking out in her armor carrying her signature twisted golden spear.

"She's first boy. Then you will face us. You will pay for your disrespect to your mother first and then we will sort you out for disrespecting your dad." Kody said.

"Good luck. She's pissed." Mitch said with a small shudder.

Kyrain shakily drew his sword. He had never faced his mother. He didn't even know his mother could fight. He took his place across from her.

"I'm sorry mom, I messed up. I won't ever do it again." Kyrain said to her, his voice echoing through the room.

Her only response was activating her powers causing her legendary golden wings to sprout from her back, then dropped into a stance Kyrain could tell she was extremely practiced in.

Kyrain was in serious trouble.
