Chapter 56: Operation Oak
Hanna woke up after sleeping for a few hours.
After crying in Erika's bosom, she could now think clearly.
Looking around, she saw she was lying on Erika's lap while Maruschka and Erika slept on each other's shoulders.
Bauer was sleeping on the other side as well.
Noticing the movement in her lap Erika woke up. She saw Hanna up as well.
Hanna blushed seeing Erika's face up close to her.
She sat up from the lap.
"Ah, lady Erika please forgive me. I was nervous earlier." She said averting Erika's eyes.
"I forgot that your father is under arrest as well and became emotional." She continued.
"It's okay, I understand how you feel. You don't have to worry. I promise I will get them both out." Erika reassured her.
"Oh, by the Hanna, do you need us to grab your mother? She must also be worried and I think his highness will also target your territory as well."
She asked worried about Hanna's family.
"I-I don't know, I think, i-it'd be better to get her." She spoke hesitantly.
Erika made the arrangements accordingly.
The coachman made a detour through the landsturm territory.
The city was nowhere near as big as the Raubenbraum territory.
After two days of journey, they reached the Landsturm city, and soon reached their palace.
Erika and Hanna got out of the carriage.
"Maruschka, Bauer stay here we will come back and soon." Erika said as she went inside along with Hanna.
The palace was moderately big and was neatly arranged.
Hanna's mother came out with her maid to greet them.
She was also a beautiful lady possibly in the mid to late 30s.
"Oh Hanna what a surprise. I didn't know you were coming." She said with a smile and came to hug Hanna.
Hanna was embarrassed.
"Mom, not in front of lady Erika." She said.
"Oh, are you Hanna's friend lady Erika Raubenbraum? My what a fine lady you are."
"Thank you lady Landsturm and pardon me for intruding suddenly." Erika forced a smile.
"Actually, I want you and Hanna to come with us to the Raubenbraum territory. Lord Landsturm will also come along with my father in a few days."
Hanna was shocked to hear this. She knew that Erika had promised to get her father out but she couldn't believe it would be that fast.
"Oh, really?!" Lady Landsturm was surprised.
"But I didn't hear anything from him." She said placing her right hand on her face.
"Actually father had been busy for the few days. He wants to finish his work fast and return as soon as possible." Hanna said.
Even though she thought it would be impossible to get them out so soon, she figured Erika spoke because she didn't want to give unnecessary trouble.
"Since lady Erika and I became friends in the academy, our whole family was invited by duke Walther Raubenbraum to visit them over the summer break."
Hanna forced a smile.
Erika was surprised at how fast Hanna adapted to the situation.
She couldn't believe this was the same girl that cried her eyes out in her embrace.
"Oh, I see. If that's the case, let me pack my things. Hanna take care of Erika until then." Lady Landsturm went inside again with her maid.
Hanna felt ashamed.
"Erika's been the one taking care of me all this time." She thought.
"Hey, Hanna I want to talk to the commander of the knights in the Landsturm lands."
"Ah, alright. I think he'd be at the knight's barrack at this time." Hanna said.
They went to look for the captain outside the main palace.
At the gate of knight barracks, Hanna asked the guard about the captain and soon the guard brought the captain with him.
He gave a courtesy bow and placed his right hand on his chest.
"Captain George is at your service milady." He said.
The knight captain was not a handsome young man as anyone would imagine.
Rather he seemed to be an older and experienced veteran of the knights corps.
Though he was tall and wore the shiny knight armour with the crest of Landsturm family, his face had various scars in it.
These reeked off the man's experience in battle and his hard training.
"Listen, this here is my friend Erika Raubenbraum. Me and my mother will be going to their territory for a few days." Hanna said.
"Do you need me to escort you milady?" He said, fixating his gazing on the ground.
"No, lady Erika wants to talk to you." Hanna said.
"Listen, there have been some problems and since the lord and his family will not be at the territory, I want you to maintain strict martial law in the area until they return."
George was surprised. He couldn't understand why martial law had to be declared for something like this.
But before he could ask, Erika spoke again.
"I'll send some reinforcements to you. They will help with maintaining order and fighting off any external threat that arise." She added.
"Umm.... as you say lady." George hesitated before answering and looked at Hanna for a while.
He couldn't understand what threats Erika was talking about, but since Hanna was beside her and didn't say anything, he decided to do as told.
Erika and Hanna went back to the main palace where, Lady Landsturm was now ready to leave.
"Oh, you look beautiful lady Landsturm." Erika remarked.
"Thank you very much Erika." She blushed.
They went out to the carriage where Maruschka and Bauer were eagerly waiting.
"Good day Lady Landsturm." Both Bauer and Maruschka said.
Erika introduced them serially with Maruschka first and then Bauer.
Maruschka went to the opposite side and Erika entered the carriage.
Hanna also sat beside Erika, while lady Landsturm and her maid sat beside Bauer on the opposite side.
"So are all of your friends going with you?" the lady asked.
"No, it's just Hanna and Maruschka." Erika replied.
"So care to tell me what's going on?" Lady asked surprising all the others.
"I am a mother you know. I can see my child worried and uncomfortable. So don't hide anything."
Erika felt guilty for trying hide the reasons of their sudden visit. She laid out everything that happened at the ball and their escape.
Albeit the version she said was a bit censored. Afterall, she could not say about the guns and shootings.
The lady was in shock and also felt despair. Still she tried to compose herself.
"D-does your mother know?" She asked Erika who in return shook her head left and right.
"I see." She didn't say anything more.
Her maid held her. While she saw that Hanna was already gloomy and leaned on Erika.
On the other side Maruschka was clinging to Erika silently as well.
She felt ashamed that she was an adult but was being held by her maid while Erika a child in similar situation was more calm and was comforting another person.
Soon the carriage reached Erika's palace.
Erika dashed out of the carriage and called for Emil and her mother.
Both of them came outside.
"There is no time to explain, mother please take care of the Landsturm family along with Maruschka. Emil, you and Bauer come with me."
Saying these few sentences she rushed outside.
Emil and Bauer both knew where she was going and went after her.
"Perdon us mistress. We will take care of her." Emil said before running out with Bauer.
Maruschka, Hanna and Hanna's mother were all surprised at the pace in which Erika worked.
They got out of the carriage and went inside the palace along with the duchess.
Meanwhile Erika came to her barracks and went into the OKW building.
Everyone there saluted her.
"As you were." She instructed.
Emil and Bauer also came behind her.
All three of them had changed into their respective Wehrmacht uniforms.
"Call the Brandenburg Regiment. Tell them to disengage and march to the Landsturm territory."
She showed a map of the kingdom and pointed out where they needed to go.
She also wrote a letter and signed it with the seal of Raubenbraum crest and handed it over to an NCO.
"Get this letter to the Colonel and tell him to give it to the Landsturm knight captain." She said.
By that time a signal officer had already contacted the regiment and relayed the newest order to them.
"Tell the colonel to dispatch his most experienced leutnant and two unteroffizier to the camp."
The officers in the OKW were stunned as Erika explained what had happened and how she planned to rescue her and her friend's father.
As soon as the dispatched officer and JCOs came into the OKW building, she started explaining the plan.
The plan was to use three spare gliders from the Luftwaffe to allow the three soldier to reach Frundestein undetected at night.
From there they'll break into the palace, excess the dungeon where her and Hanna's father maybe kept.
She remembered the palace blueprints from the game.
Especially the dungeon where she as the villainess was supposed to be kept before final judgment.
She explained them how to excess that place from outside.
"But kommandant, we can't get them out in the gliders." Emil raised a fair point in Erika's plan.
"They won't use the gliders. Once they land inside the palace they'll have to blow them up." Erika said.
"So how will they get out?" asked Bauer this time.
"The king's personal carriage should be at the garage nearby. use that."
Everyone now understood the full plan. The three participants were very excited for the mission.
Erika wanted to finish the operation as early as possible. So the time was set for that night.
"Operation Oak is a go." She said loudly.
The Brandenburg regiment which was kept as mobile reserve behind the GD regiment was soon ready to move.
All the personnel formed a neat column and started to march, while the artillery and other heavier equipments were towed by horses.
An officer from OKW delivered Erika's letter to the colonel while the regiment was on the move.
